L'armonizzazione dei reati in Europa fra 'parabola' e 'piano inclinato': il caso della incriminazione dell'organizzazione criminale
2021
After recalling Alessandro Bernardi's contribution to the diffusion in Italy of attention to the issues of European criminal law, the contribution examines the gap between programmes and achievements in the harmonisation of European criminal law systems. According to a first approach, it has traced a sort of parabola, which is now in a downward phase. In this regard, the incrimination of criminal organisations is taken as a test case for assessing European criminal law harmonisation. A critical review is then made of the deficits in the creation of a common basis for combating criminal organisations, highlighting certain trends in the adaptation of Member States to the standards set by the …
Weathering of evaporites: natural versus anthropogenic signature on the composition of river waters
2015
Weathering of evaporites strongly influences the chemistry of continental runoff, making surface waters poorly exploitable for civil uses. In south-central Sicily, this phenomenon is worsened by the occurrence of abandoned landfills of old sulphur and salt mines. The industrial evolution of the Bosco-S. Cataldo mining site leaved two landfills from the early exploitation of a sulphur mine followed by that of a kainite deposit. In particular, the weathering of these landfills leads the dissolved salt (TDS) values up to about 200 g l−1 in the Stincone–Salito Stream waters. This process induces the V, Cr and Fe desorption from sediments and particulates in the aqueous phase under reducing cond…
Corporate spin-offs value creation : parent & spin-off view
2015
Corporate spin-offs have gained popularity over the past few years. Despite of this in Finnish media and university teaching this phenomenon has gained little attention. This study aims to fulfill this knowledge gap. Spin-off is a restructuring procedure where company splits into two separate legal entities via pro-rata transaction basis. I researched this phenomenon by event-study methodology which has been quite popular also in earlier studies. I have com-pared parent and spin-off stock performance in order to reveal potential value gains for investors. Parent company is analyzed also from the announcement period where we find strong positive abnormal returns associated with announcement …
Sexual and natural selection on body mass and metabolic rates in free-living bank voles
2010
Summary 1. Because energy is a crucial resource, adaptive significance of variation in the rate of energy metabolism, and especially in basal (BMR) and maximum aerobic (VO2max) metabolic rates, is a popular theme in evolutionary and ecological physiology. However, little is known about the association of these traits with fitness components in populations of free-living animals. 2. We studied the association between body size, the metabolic rates, and reproductive success in bank voles (Myodes glareolus) in an isolated, small island population. Correlation analyses were performed for two measures of reproductive performance: mating success (the number of partners with which an individual ha…
Badanie pamięci lokalnej w kontekście państwowej polityki pamięci w Polsce. Deportacje w głąb Rosji i na Sybir w pamięci nieoficjalnej
2018
Researchers in social memory are bound in their work to include the relations occurring between the memory of local communities and the official historical policy of the State. When events retained and exposed in the local memory are persistently passed over in silence, distorted, falsified or removed from the public sphere by means of decisions taken by the censorship, the remembrance of these events takes on the character of concealed memory, which integrates the given social group tightly (e.g., the Siberians, the Silesians). The transformations which followed in Poland after 1989 (liquidation of the Censorship) formally introduced „commonwealths of memory” into the public debate; howeve…
On thermoeconomics of energy systems at variable load conditions: integrated optimization of plant design and operation
2007
Abstract Thermoeconomics has been assuming a growing role among the disciplines oriented to the analysis of energy systems, its different methodologies allowing solution of problems in the fields of cost accounting, plant design optimisation and diagnostic of malfunctions. However, the thermoeconomic methodologies as such are particularly appropriate to analyse large industrial systems at steady or quasi-steady operation, but they can be hardly applied to small to medium scale units operating in unsteady conditions to cover a variable energy demand. In this paper, the fundamentals of thermoeconomics for systems operated at variable load are discussed, examining the cost formation process an…
Enabling Backoff for SCM Wake-Up Radio: Protocol and Modeling
2017
In sub-carrier modulation (SCM) wake-up radio (WuR) enabled wireless sensor networks, a node can initiate data transmission at any instant of time. In this letter, we propose to activate a backoff procedure before sending wake-up calls (WuCs) in order to avoid potential collisions among WuCs. Consequently, no backoff is needed for the main radio after a WuC is received. A discrete-time Markov chain model is developed to evaluate the performance. Numerical results on network throughput, energy efficiency, average delay, and collision probability reveal the benefits of enabling backoff for SCM-WuRs, especially under heavy traffic loads or saturated traffic conditions.
AUTOMATIC TAKE-OFF OR LANDING PATH FOLLOWING IN TURBULENT AIR FOR UAS - AN EKF BASED PROCEDURE
2015
By using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) an accurate take-off or landing flight path following in turbulent air is performed. The tuned up procedure employs simultaneously two different EKF: the first one estimates gust disturbances, the second one affords to determine the necessary controls displacements for rejecting those ones. In particular, the first filter, by using instrumental measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates wind components. The second one obtains command laws able to follow the desired flight path. To perform this task aerodynamic coefficients have been modified by adding entirely new derivatives or synthetic increments to basic ones whose might the kind of chang…
Know your full potential: Quantitative Kelvin probe force microscopy on nanoscale electrical devices
2018
In this study we investigate the influence of the operation method in Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) on the measured potential distribution. KPFM is widely used to map the nanoscale potential distribution in operating devices, e.g., in thin film transistors or on cross sections of functional solar cells. Quantitative surface potential measurements are crucial for understanding the operation principles of functional nanostructures in these electronic devices. Nevertheless, KPFM is prone to certain imaging artifacts, such as crosstalk from topography or stray electric fields. Here, we compare different amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) KPFM methods on a reference s…
On the Structure of Bispecial Sturmian Words
2013
A balanced word is one in which any two factors of the same length contain the same number of each letter of the alphabet up to one. Finite binary balanced words are called Sturmian words. A Sturmian word is bispecial if it can be extended to the left and to the right with both letters remaining a Sturmian word. There is a deep relation between bispecial Sturmian words and Christoffel words, that are the digital approximations of Euclidean segments in the plane. In 1997, J. Berstel and A. de Luca proved that \emph{palindromic} bispecial Sturmian words are precisely the maximal internal factors of \emph{primitive} Christoffel words. We extend this result by showing that bispecial Sturmian wo…
