A link between heritable parasite resistance and mate choice in dung beetles

Parasites play a central role in the adaptiveness of sexual reproduction. Sexual selection theory suggests a role for parasite resistance in the context of mate choice, but the evidence is mixed. The parasite-mediated sexual selection (PMSS) hypothesis derives a number of predictions, among which that resistance to parasites is heritable, and that female choice favors parasite resistance genes in males. Here, we tested the PMSS hypothesis using the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus, a species that can be heavily parasitized by Macrocheles merdarius mites, which are known to affect adult survival. Tämä maisterintutkielma selvittää ilmisubjektin esiintyvyyttä kirjoitetussa oppijansuomessa. Tutkimus on aihealueeltaan suomi toisena kielenä -tutkimusta. Ilmisubjektin käyttöä kirjoitetussa oppijansuomessa ei ole vastaavanlaisesti tutkittu. Tutkimus pyrkii selvittämään, miten ilmisubjekti esiintyy yksikön 1. persoonassa Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen (EVK) eri taitotasoilla. Lisäksi tutkitaan sitä, esiintyykö ilmisubjekti poikkeavasti eri semanttisissa verbiluokissa. Myös selvitetään, vaikuttaako verbin esiintymisfrekvenssi siihen, kuinka usein verbi on ilmisubjektillinen. The novel coronavirus pandemic forced schools to implement remote instruction during spring 2020. I studied teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of newcomer and Finnish as a second language instruction during the remote period. Survey respondents considered remote instruction a burden on both students and teachers and thought students’ unfamiliarity with educational technology presented challenges. Benefits of remote instruction included students’ increased self-directedness in learning, the use of technologies for differentiation, and an increase in collaboration with colleagues and families. nonPeerReviewed

This study examines animal rights activism in Finland. Since 1995, when the first public acts of animal liberation in Finland took place, animal rights activists have made up one of the most debated Finnish social movements. In this research, I study animal rights activism as a phenomenon and as a form of political action. The study approaches the issue by applying the concepts of political style and cultural othering as analytical tools. The study is empirical and bases its analysis on qualitative methodology, especially content analysis. I interviewed activists in 2000-2002 and again in 2015.
