The sorption efficiency and possible secondary effects of activated carbon (AC) (o 63-200 μm) was studied with Lumbriculus variegatus in three PCB contaminated sediments applying long AC-sediment contact time (3 years). AC amendment efficiently reduced PCB bioavailability as determined with both, L. variegatus bioaccumulation test and passive samplers. However, dose related secondary effects of AC on egestion rate and biomass were observed (applied doses 0.25% and 2.5% sediment dry weight). Abstract The linkage between acute adverse effects of cadmium and internal cadmium levels were investigated for the oligochaete worm Lumbriculus variegatus in water at varying degrees of hardness and two different dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. The LC50s for the effect of cadmium on the survival of the worms greatly differed depending on water hardness and DOC. Oligochaetes were sampled using meiobenthos methods from depths of between 20 and 94 m in Lake Paijanne in 1986. Individuals belonging to several species of the Naididae and Aeolosomatidae, which are generally considered to include mainly littoral or lotic species, were found more or less regularly at these profundal depths. The naidid species Chaetogaster langi and Arnphichaeta leydigii were more abundant in the deepest areas than at 20 m. Species also appeared to react differently to water quality. In material sampled from 0.5–6 m on two sampling dates and three subareas the dominant Oligochaeta were Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparede and Peloscolex ferox (Eisen), both composing more than 30% of the abundances of oligochaetes present. The numbers of Oligochaeta were mostly higher in August than in May. Regional differences could be found although the lake seems to be very homogenous. Temporal and vertical variations were detectable in separate subareas. The oligochaete biomass was maximal at 2 m depth. Abstract Soil samples and earthworms collected from one noncleaned and two cleaned sawmill environments were analysed for their content of chlorinated anisoles (methoxybenzenes), veratroles (1,2-dimethoxybenzenes) and 1,4-dimethoxybenzenes. 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole and pentachloroanisole were observed in all soil samples studied, in maximum combined amount about 1.5 μg/g dry soil. Small amounts (ca. 1–110 ng/g dry mass) of 3,4,5-trichloroveratrole, tetrachloroveratrole and tetrachloro-1,4-dimethoxybenzene were found in the most polluted soil samples.
