A Methodology and Tool for Rapid Prototyping of Data Warehouses Using Data Mining: Application to Birds Biodiversity

2014

Data Warehouses (DWs) are large repositories of data aimed at supporting the decision-making process by enabling flexible and interactive analyses via OLAP systems. Rapid prototyping of DWs is necessary when OLAP applications are complex. Some work about the integration of Data Mining and OLAP systems has been done to enhance OLAP operators with mined indicators, and/or to define the DW schema. However, to best of our knowledge, prototyping methods for DWs do not support this kind of integration. Then, in this paper we present a new prototyping methodology for DWs, extending [3], where DM methods are used to define the DW schema. We validate our approach on a real data set concerning bird b…

A Lotka-type model for oscillations in surface reactions

1997

In this paper we introduce a reaction model on a lattice which leads to oscillations. The model consists of two monomolecular and one bimolecular reaction step and is related to the Lotka model. Despite the simple evolution rules, the model shows a complex behaviour (i.e. the appearance of oscillations). This offers us the opportunity to test different types of stochastic approximations and compare them with the results of a Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation is performed on a large lattice (L = 1024) in order to take long-range correlations into account. Comparing the results of this simulation with the stochastic approaches shows that only advanced numerical approximations are able to…

Comparison results for Monge - Ampère type equations with lower order terms

2003

In this paper we deal with Monge-Ampère type equations in two dimensions and, using the symmetrization with respect to the perimeter, we prove some comparison results for solutions of such equations involving the solutions of conveniently symmetrized problems.

Online topology estimation for vector autoregressive processes in data networks

2017

An important problem in data sciences pertains to inferring causal interactions among a collection of time series. Upon modeling these as a vector autoregressive (VAR) process, this paper deals with estimating the model parameters to identify the underlying causality graph. To exploit the sparse connectivity of causality graphs, the proposed estimators minimize a group-Lasso regularized functional. To cope with real-time applications, big data setups, and possibly time-varying topologies, two online algorithms are presented to recover the sparse coefficients when observations are received sequentially. The proposed algorithms are inspired by the classic recursive least squares (RLS) algorit…

Non-linear RLS-based algorithm for pattern classification

2006

A new non-linear recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm is presented in the context of pattern classification problems. The algorithm incorporates the non-linearity of the filter's output in the updating rules of the classical RLS algorithm. The proposed method yields lower stationary error levels when compared to the standard LMS and RLS algorithms in a classical application of pattern classification, such as the channel equalization problem.

Artificial Ground Motions and Nonlinear Response of RC Structures

2020

The selection of seismic inputs for nonlinear dynamic analysis is widely debated, mainly focusing on the advantages and disadvantages provided by the choice of natural, simulated, or artificial records. This work proves the differences in the structural behavior of RC buildings when using accelerograms with different levels of stationarity. Initially, nonlinear response under three sets of accelerograms equivalent in terms of pseudo acceleration spectrum is evaluated and compared. Then, the results of incremental dynamic analyses are compared by the statistical point of view considering different levels of irregularity for the reference structure.

Multiple solutions for strongly resonant Robin problems

2018

We consider nonlinear (driven by the p†Laplacian) and semilinear Robin problems with indefinite potential and strong resonance with respect to the principal eigenvalue. Using variational methods and critical groups, we prove four multiplicity theorems producing up to four nontrivial smooth solutions.

Compartmental analysis of dynamic nuclear medicine data: Models and identifiability

2016

Compartmental models based on tracer mass balance are extensively used in clinical and pre-clinical nuclear medicine in order to obtain quantitative information on tracer metabolism in the biological tissue. This paper is the first of a series of two that deal with the problem of tracer coefficient estimation via compartmental modelling in an inverse problem framework. Specifically, here we discuss the identifiability problem for a general n-dimension compartmental system and provide uniqueness results in the case of two-compartment and three-compartment compartmental models. The second paper will utilize this framework in order to show how non-linear regularization schemes can be applied t…

Regularization operators for natural images based on nonlinear perception models.

2006

Image restoration requires some a priori knowledge of the solution. Some of the conventional regularization techniques are based on the estimation of the power spectrum density. Simple statistical models for spectral estimation just take into account second-order relations between the pixels of the image. However, natural images exhibit additional features, such as particular relationships between local Fourier or wavelet transform coefficients. Biological visual systems have evolved to capture these relations. We propose the use of this biological behavior to build regularization operators as an alternative to simple statistical models. The results suggest that if the penalty operator take…
