Interaction free and decoherence free states

2015

An interaction free evolving state of a closed bipartite system composed of two interacting subsystems is a generally mixed state evolving as if the interaction were a c-number. In this paper we find the characteristic equation of states possessing similar properties for a bipartite systems governed by a linear dynamical equation whose generator is sum of a free term and an interaction term. In particular in the case of a small system coupled to its environment, we deduce the characteristic equation of decoherence free states namely mixed states evolving as if the interaction term were effectively inactive. Several examples illustrate the applicability of our theory in different physical co…

Dynamics of geometric and entropic quantifiers of correlations in open quantum systems

2012

We extend the Hilbert-Schmidt (square norm) distance, previously used to define the geometric quantum discord, to define also geometric quantifiers of total and classical correlations. We then compare the dynamics of geometric and entropic quantifiers of the different kinds of correlations in a non-Markovian open two-qubit system under local dephasing. We find that qualitative differences occur only for quantum discords. This is taken to imply that geometric and entropic discords are not, in general, equivalent in describing the dynamics of quantum correlations. We then show that also geometric and entropic quantifiers of total correlations present qualitative disagreements in the state spa…

Dynamics of quantum correlations in two-qubit systems within non-Markovian environments

2012

Knowledge of the dynamical behavior of correlations with no classical counterpart, like entanglement, nonlocal correlations and quantum discord, in open quantum systems is of primary interest because of the possibility to exploit these correlations for quantum information tasks. Here we review some of the most recent results on the dynamics of correlations in bipartite systems embedded in non-Markovian environments that, with their memory effects, influence in a relevant way the system dynamics and appear to be more fundamental than the Markovian ones for practical purposes. Firstly, we review the phenomenon of entanglement revivals in a two-qubit system for both independent environments an…

Master equations for two qubits coupled via a nonlinear mode

2013

A microscopic master equation describing the dynamics of two qubits coupled via a nonlinear mediator is constructed supposing that the two qubits, as well as the nonlinear mode, interact, each with its own independent bosonic bath. Generally speaking the master equation derived in this way represents a more appropriate tool for studying the dynamics of open quantum systems. Indeed we show that it is more complex than the phenomenological master equation, constructed simply adding ad hoc dissipative terms.

Coherence and organisation in lanthanoid complexes: from single ion magnets to spin qubits

2016

Molecular magnetism is reaching a degree of development that will allow for the rational design of sophisticated systems. Among these, here we will focus on those that display single-molecule magnetic behaviour, i.e. classical memories, and on magnetic molecules that can be used as molecular spin qubits, the irreducible components of any quantum technology. Compared with candidates developed from physics, a major advantage of molecular spin qubits stems from the power of chemistry for the tailored and inexpensive synthesis of new systems for their experimental study; in particular, the so-called lanthanoid-based single-ion magnets, which have for a long time been one of the hottest topics i…

Single scatterings in single artificial atoms: Quantum coherence and entanglement

2003

We employ the quantum-jump approach to study single scatterings in single semiconductor quantum dots. Two prototypical situations are investigated. First, we analyze two-photon emissions from the cascade biexciton decay of a dot where the single-exciton states exhibit a fine-structure splitting. We show that this splitting results for appropriately chosen polarization filters in an oscillatory behavior of two-photon correlations, and carefully examine the proper theoretical description of the underlying scattering processes. Secondly, we analyze the decay of a single-electron charged exciton in a quantum dot embedded in a field effect structure. We show how the quantum properties of the cha…

Observation of time-invariant coherence in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator

2016

The ability to live in coherent superpositions is a signature trait of quantum systems and constitutes an irreplaceable resource for quantum-enhanced technologies. However, decoherence effects usually destroy quantum superpositions. It was recently predicted that, in a composite quantum system exposed to dephasing noise, quantum coherence in a transversal reference basis can stay protected for an indefinite time. This can occur for a class of quantum states independently of the measure used to quantify coherence, and it requires no control on the system during the dynamics. Here, such an invariant coherence phenomenon is observed experimentally in two different setups based on nuclear magne…

The role of environmental correlations in the non-Markovian dynamics of a spin system

2011

We put forward a framework to study the dynamics of a chain of interacting quantum particles affected by individual or collective multi-mode environment, focussing on the role played by the environmental quantum correlations over the evolution of the chain. The presence of entanglement in the state of the environmental system magnifies the non-Markovian nature of the chain's dynamics, giving rise to structures in figures of merit such as entanglement and purity that are not observed under a separable multi-mode environment. Our analysis can be relevant to problems tackling the open-system dynamics of biological complexes of strong current interest.

Local-channel-induced rise of quantum correlations in continuous-variable systems

2012

It was recently discovered that the quantum correlations of a pair of disentangled qubits, as measured by the quantum discord, can increase solely because of their interaction with a local dissipative bath. Here, we show that a similar phenomenon can occur in continuous-variable bipartite systems. To this aim, we consider a class of two-mode squeezed thermal states and study the behavior of Gaussian quantum discord under various local Markovian non-unitary channels. While these in general cause a monotonic drop of quantum correlations, an initial rise can take place with a thermal-noise channel.

The su(1,1) Tavis-Cummings model

1998

A generic su(1,1) Tavis-Cummings model is solved both by the quantum inverse method and within a conventional quantum-mechanical approach. Examples of corresponding quantum dynamics including squeezing properties of the su(1,1) Perelomov coherent states for the multiatom case are given.
