Evaluation of the postural stability of elderly persons using time domain signal analysis
2012
A force platform is widely used in the evaluation of postural stability in man. Although an abundance of parameters are typically retrieved from force platform data, no uniform analysis of the data has been carried out. In general, the signal analysis does not analyze the underlying postural event, i.e., whether the signal consists of several small corrections or large excursions. In the present work, we studied the postural stability of 4589 elderly persons from Iceland on a force platform under visual and non-visual conditions during stance on a solid surface. We analyzed the internal relationship between frequently used time domain variables. In addition, we conducted a factor analysis u…
Slightly radiopaque uric acid calculi: impact upon therapeutic considerations?
1989
Ten patients with slightly radiopaque urinary calculi were treated by percutaneous litholapaxy or even open surgery. The stone analysis revealed uric acid as the main stone composite suggesting that these patients should have been treated by oral litholysis alone alkalinizing the urine and decreasing uric acid levels with allopurinol. CT density measurements proved that concrements with HE less than 600 can be successfully dissolved by oral medication alone. Twenty-four patients were subsequently treated by oral citrate alkalinizing the spontaneous urine to pH 6.8-7.2 dissolving even large staghorns within 6-8 weeks. CT density measurements have become a routine diagnostic procedure when po…
Surgical repair of popliteal artery aneurysms remains a safe treatment option in the endovascular era: a 10-year single-center study
2012
Introduction: Endovascular popliteal artery aneurysm repair has emerged recently as a feasible alternative to standard surgical repair. However the evidence from the literature is still limited, with only case reports, case series and one small randomized trial. Currently these data suggest the use of stent-grafts in patients at very high surgical risk. The purpose of this study is to present our surgical experience in popliteal artery aneurysm repair in an era of endovascular philosophy. Materials and Methods: Data from 36 consecutive patients who were admitted to our hospital from January 2000 to April 2010, were analyzed retrospectively. Twenty-six patients underwent surgical treatment t…
Mortality attributable to COVID-19 in nursing home residents: a retrospective study
2021
AbstractAimCoronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) is a widespread condition in nursing home (NH). It is not known whether COVID-19 is associated with a higher risk of death than residents without COVID-19. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether COVID-19 is associated with a higher mortality rate in NH residents, considering frailty status assessed with the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI).MethodsIn this retrospective study, made in 31 NHs in Venice, Italy, the presence of COVID-19 was ascertained with a nasopharyngeal swab. Frailty was evaluated using the MPI, modified according to the tools commonly used in our NHs. A Cox’s regression analysis was used reporting the resul…
Pain Increases the Risk for Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Adults: Results From the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing
2023
AbstractBackgroundPain and sarcopenia are common in older people. Cross-sectional studies have reported a significant association between these two conditions, but cohort studies exploring pain as a potential risk factor for sarcopenia are scarce. Given this background, the aim of the present work was to investigate the association between pain (and its severity) at baseline, and the incidence of sarcopenia over 10 years of follow-up in a large representative sample of the English older adult population.MethodsPain was diagnosed using self-reported information and categorized as mild to severe pain at four sites (low back, hip, knee, and feet). Incident sarcopenia was defined as having low …
Physical Multimorbidity and Sarcopenia among Adults Aged ≥65 Years in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
2022
Introduction: Physical multimorbidity is plausibly linked to sarcopenia. However, to date, only a few studies exist on this topic, and none have examined this association in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between multimorbidity and sarcopenia in a sample of older adults from six LMICs (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa). Methods: Cross-sectional, community-based data from the WHO Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE) were analysed. Sarcopenia was defined as having low skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and weak handgrip strength, while severe …
Role of Cachexia and Fragility in the Patient Candidate for Cardiac Surgery
2021
Frailty is the major expression of accelerated aging and describes a decreased resistance to stressors, and consequently an increased vulnerability to additional diseases in elderly people. The vascular aging related to frail phenotype reflects the high susceptibility for cardiovascular diseases and negative postoperative outcomes after cardiac surgery. Sarcopenia can be considered a biological substrate of physical frailty. Malnutrition and physical inactivity play a key role in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. We searched on Medline (PubMed) and Scopus for relevant literature published over the last 10 years and analyzed the strong correlation between frailty, sarcopenia and cardiovascular…
Mitochondrial Markers in Aging and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
2020
This review focuses on recent progress in understanding the role of mitochondrial markers in the context of mitochondrial dysfunction in glaucoma and discussing new therapeutic approaches to modulate mitochondrial function and potentially lead to improved outcomes in glaucoma.
Update on the ESCEO recommendation for the conduct of clinical trials for drugs aiming at the treatment of sarcopenia in older adults
2020
Abstract Background In 2016, an expert working group was convened under the auspices of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) and formulated consensus recommendations for the conduct of clinical trials for drugs to prevent or treat sarcopenia. Aims The objective of the current paper is to provide a 2020 update of the previous recommendations in accordance with the evidence that has become available since our original recommendations. Methods This paper is based on literature reviews performed by members of the ESCEO working group and followed up with face to face meetings organized for the whole group to make amendments and discuss…
