The iterative object symmetry transform
2005
This paper introduces a new operator named the Iterated Object Transform that is computed by combining the Object Symmetry Transform with the morphological operator erosion. This new operator has been applied on both binary and gray levels images showing the ability to grasp the internal structure of a digital object. We present some experiments on real images in face analysis.
Financial crisis impact on sustainability reporting
2013
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the effect of the current financial crisis on corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting and CSR assurance strategies that companies disclose online to stakeholders, by dividing the time horizon into two periods, before 2008 and from 2008. Design/methodology/approach – The sample includes Spanish listed companies, differentiating CSR reporters from non CSR-reporters. Also distinguished in the CSR-reporters sample, are those companies that assure the CSR report from those that do not. The authors contrast whether there is a trend as regards CSR reporting and CSR assurance, depending on whether the crisis has already begun or …
Oral Dabigatran Etexilate Versus Enoxaparin for Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism After Total Hip or Knee Arthroplasty: A Pooled Analysis of Four …
2011
Abstract Abstract 2312 Introduction: Thromboprophylaxis after major orthopaedic surgery reduces the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Four randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority trials compared oral dabigatran etexilate doses of 220 mg or 150 mg once daily (qd) with subcutaneous enoxaparin for the primary prevention of VTE in patients undergoing elective total hip or knee arthroplasty. In the hip arthroplasty trials (RE-NOVATE® and RE-NOVATE® II) the treatment duration was 28–35 days; in the knee arthroplasty trials it was 6–10 days (RE-MODEL™) and 12–15 days (RE-MOBILIZE®). Three of the trials used a comparator enoxaparin regimen of 40 mg qd started the evening before surgery, while…
Perioperative diaphragm point-of-care ultrasound as a prediction tool of postoperative respiratory failure in high-risk patients: A feasibility study…
2021
Abstract Introduction Respiratory muscle function in the postoperative period is a key to whether a patient develops Postoperative Respiratory Failure (PRF) or not. PRF occurs when the gas exchange does not meet metabolic needs. Ipsilateral paralysis of the hemidiaphragm after interscalenic brachial plexus block (ISB) causes an acute reduction of respiratory muscle function. This reduction does not cause PRF when the contralateral hemidiaphragm generates enough gas exchange to meet metabolic demands. Objectives To study the evolution of hemidiaphragmatic muscle function during the perioperative period with diaphragmatic ultrasound (D-POCUS), and use it as an innovative tool to predict PRF, …
F.A.L.C.A.D.E.: a fuzzy software for the energy and environmental balances of products
2004
Abstract It is generally well known that the reliability of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) studies depends upon exact, complete and sharp input data that, unfortunately, are not always available. Furthermore, when available, the input data are affected by uncertainty whose importance is not always adequately taken into consideration. This paper describes the software F.A.L.C.A.D.E. (Fuzzy Approach to Life Cycle Analysis and Decision Environment): a tool designed for the calculation of the eco-profile of products, based on a fuzzy logic approach. The originality of the method already treated in other papers is to use the fuzzy representation to manage the complex relationships that arise in compi…
A simple operation strategy of battery storage systems under dynamic electricity pricing: An Italian case study for a medium-scale public facility
2014
In the electricity market, wholesale energy prices depend on the balance between energy production and load demand. In the last few years, electricity market has become more and more flexible as many utilities have started to replace the fixed retail prices schemes with prices changing during the day. Dynamic pricing, also known as Real-Time Pricing (RTP), reflects the trend of the wholesale market and allows to reduce the volatility of the wholesale prices, also contributing to a reduction of demand peaks. Electricity customers take advantage of dynamic pricing by shifting their consumption according to the real-time prices or by using Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to shift electri…

Experience in Spain with the first patients in home hemodialysis treated with low-flow dialysate monitors
2021
Thymic transplantation for relief of immunodeficiency diseases.
1979
Tremendous advances have been made in replacement therapy regimens for the correction of immunodeficiency in transplant patients. Recently, cultured thymic fragments were shown to be devoid of lethal graft-versus-host cells and research in this area indicates that thymic transplantation may have a sustained positive effect in immunosuppressed patients.
Inference of Spatiotemporal Processes over Graphs via Kernel Kriged Kalman Filtering
2018
Inference of space-time signals evolving over graphs emerges naturally in a number of network science related applications. A frequently encountered challenge pertains to reconstructing such dynamic processes given their values over a subset of vertices and time instants. The present paper develops a graph-aware kernel-based kriged Kalman filtering approach that leverages the spatio-temporal dynamics to allow for efficient online reconstruction, while also coping with dynamically evolving network topologies. Laplacian kernels are employed to perform kriging over the graph when spatial second-order statistics are unknown, as is often the case. Numerical tests with synthetic and real data ill…
