Design of energy efficient MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks
2014
Masteroppgave i Informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi IKT590 Universitetet i Agder 2014 Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been used in variety of applications such as in military and defense, process control industry and health monitoring applications. In WSNs, sensors are in small size with limited battery capacity and idle listening is a crucial problem which consumes more energy. Duty cycling (DC) is a technique which is used in many medium access control (MAC) protocols to reduce idle listening. In this thesis, we propose an asynchronous DC protocol, namely energy balancing asynchronous cooperative transmission medium access control (EB-ACT-MAC), which balances the remaining energ…
Added Value of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Clinical Nomograms for Predicting Adverse Pathology in Prostate Cancer
2018
PURPOSE: We examined the additional value of preoperative prostate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and transrectal ultrasound/multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging fusion guided targeted biopsy when performed in combination with clinical nomograms to predict adverse pathology at radical prostatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients who underwent 3 Tesla multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging prior to fusion biopsy and radical prostatectomy. The Partin and the MSKCC (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) preradical prostatectomy nomograms were applied to estimate the probability of organ confined disease, extraprostatic extension, seminal vesicle inva…
Antimicrobial Lubricant Did Not Reduce Infection Rate in Transrectal Biopsy Patients in a Large Randomized Trial Due to Low Complication Rates
2018
Abstract Background Transrectal prostate biopsy (pbx) is the most frequent outpatient procedure in the urological field. Septic complications are a major health issue. Objective To evaluate complication rates with or without an antimicrobial lubricant. Design, setting, and participants A total of 1000 patients received pbx between 2013 and 2015. Information about complications was collected by a 3-wk questionnaire. Return rate was 73.2% (n = 732). Intervention Randomization for pbx with the instillation of an antimicrobial lubricant (intervention group, n = 385) or the standard lubricant (control group, n = 347) was performed. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Multivariable anal…
Effectiveness of substituting cyclosporin A with tacrolimus in reducing gingival overgrowth in renal transplant patients
2009
Objectives: this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of periodontal therapy combined with tacrolimus in the suppression of gingival overgrowth (GO) and the effect on GO of changing from cyclosporin A to tacrolimus. Patients and methods: sixteen renal transplant patients, averaging 52 years of age, whose kidney function was stable and were receiving treatment with cyclosporin A, were randomly assigned to one of two groups. In the experimental group, patients were instructed in oral hygiene and underwent periodontal treatment, whereas in the control group, only oral hygiene instructions were given. After the first visit and the change of medication from cyclosporine to tacrolimus in both…
Interaction affordances in traditional instruments and tablet computers: A study of children’s musical group creativity
2019
In order to promote children’s collaborative musical creativity in new digital environments, we need a better understanding not only of the sound production capabilities provided by the new digital tools, but also of the interaction affordances involved. This study focuses on the interactional patterns emerging in children’s musical creativity, comparing creative group processes on iPad tablet computers (with GarageBand software) to processes on traditional musical instruments. Both instrumentations were assigned to five groups of four 10–12-year-olds for creating sound landscapes for a “space” movie. The traditional instrument groups’ processes were characterized by peer teaching as well …
Inter-observer variability of central corneal thickness measurements using non-contact specular microscopy after laser in situ keratomileusis.
2003
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the inter-observer variability of central corneal thickness measurements carried out with a non-contact specular microscope in patients who had undergone myopic laser in situ keratomileusis. METHODS Twenty-six eyes of 26 subjects who had undergone myopic laser in situ keratomileusis were studied with the Topcon SP-2000P non-contact specular microscope (Topcon Corp, Tokyo, Japan). The mean of three consecutive measurements of the central corneal thickness was recorded by two investigators prior to and one month after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis. Results obtained by each of the two physicians were compared. RESULTS Prior to surgery t…
Total RNA-isolation of abdominal hernia of rats for quantitative real-time reverse transcription (RT) PCR assays.
2007
Abstract Increasing complications in incisional hernia surgery call for novel treatments. A gene expression analysis of injured tissues displays important parameters for tissue regeneration. Until today, no reliable method has been described for a quantitative gene expression analysis of hernia tissues. In this work, a protocol is described for the isolation of DNA‐free total RNA of incisional hernias for the first time. Moreover, real‐time RT PCR assays for collagen type I and III and TGF‐β1 are demonstrated for relative gene expression analyses. Both methods enable relative gene expression analyses of hernia tissues for the first time.
Influence of different approaches to the cerebellopontine angle on the function of the intermediate nerve
2007
Object Surgery in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a standard procedure at many centers. Outcome is focused mainly on preservation of hearing and facial function postoperatively. The nonmotor part of the facial nerve, the intermediate nerve, is nearly neglected nowadays. Methods A retrospective study was designed, including a questionnaire that was sent to 178 patients who had undergone surgery between 2000 and 2004. Data were obtained in 156 cases. The questionnaire was divided into five parts assessing the presence of increased tearing, reduced tearing, salivation disturbances, increased nasal secretions, and abnormalities in taste. Finally, a self-assessment of patient symptoms was a…
[Coauthorship networks and institutional collaboration in Farmacia Hospitalaria].
2009
Abstract Background Scientific collaboration is necessary for the advance of science. The purpose of this study is to analyze collaboration between authors and Spanish institutions in scientific studies published in Farmacia Hospitalaria, applying methodology derived from the analysis of social networks. Methodology The study identified pairs of authors and institutions co-authoring or co-signing the same works published in Farmacia Hospitalaria between 1998 and 2007, building collaboration networks using the TextToPajek and Networks-PAJEK programs. Results 448 articles were analyzed, showing an average signature/article index of 4.79. Applying a collaboration threshold of 3 articles, 26 cl…
