Valence instabilities and inhomogeneous mixed valence in some ternary europium compounds
1997
Abstract Photoemission spectra and TB-LMTO-ASA band structure calculations of some mixed valency europium compounds hve been studied. The band structures are compared with the band structures of the isostructural lanthanum and strontium compounds. Surprisingly a 4f density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level is observed in inhomogenous mixed valency EuPd 3 B, Eu 3 S 4 , and EuPdP. Indeed a van Hove Singularity (vHS) derived from the d states of La and Pd or p states of boron or phosphorous are found in La 3 S 4 , LaPd 3 B and SrPdP. The valence instability in the Eu compounds is thus not necessarily due to Eu 4f states. The results also provide some ground for the assumption that i…
Formation of nanostructures in Eu3+ doped glass-ceramics: an XAS study.
2012
We describe the results of x-ray absorption experiments carried out to deduce structural and chemical information in Eu(3+) doped, transparent, oxyfluoride glass and nanostructured glass-ceramic samples. The spectra were measured at the Pb and Eu-L(III) edges. The Eu environment in the glass samples is observed to be similar to that of EuF(3). Complementary x-ray diffraction experiments show that thermal annealing creates β-PbF(2) type nanocrystals. X-ray absorption indicates that Eu ions act as seeds in the nanocrystal formation. There is evidence of interstitial fluorine atoms around Eu ions as well as Eu dimers. X-ray absorption at the Pb-L(III) edge shows that after the thermal treatmen…
On the development of a new approach to the design of lanthanide-based materials for solution-processed OLEDs
2019
The targeted design of lanthanide-based emitters for solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) resulted in obtaining an NIR OLED with one of the highest efficiencies among ytterbium-based solution-processed OLEDs (30 μW W-1). The design was aimed at the combination of high luminescence efficiency with solubility and charge carrier mobility. The latter was achieved thanks to the introduction of the purposefully selected neutral ligands, which combine electron mobility and the ability to sensitize lanthanide luminescence. Besides, the HOMO and LUMO energies and charge carrier mobility of solution-processed thin films of coordination compounds were measured experimentally for th…

Physicochemical compatibility of nebuliser solution admixtures containing colistimethate and hypertonic saline or colistimethate, fluticasone-17-prop…
2012
Objectives For practical reasons, patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) tend to mix different inhalation solutions for concomitant inhalation instead of inhaling the different medications consecutively. A study was undertaken to examine the compatibility of colistimethate dissolved in 5.85% hypertonic sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and the quadripartite mixtures of colistimethate, fluticasone-17-propionate, ipratropium bromide and salbutamol sulfate. Methods The test solutions were prepared by mixing ordinary doses of the inhalation products and analysed immediately. Microbiological assays of antibiotics and high-performance liquid chromatography assays were used to determine chemical compati…
Coordination Chemistry in the Solid: Evidence for Coordination Modes within Hybrid Materials Different from those in Solution
2002
Two routes of incorporation of europium(III) salts into cyclam-containing hybrid materials have been explored, to elucidate the coordination mode of EuIII in cyclam-containing hybrid materials in a study of the arrangement of cyclam moieties during the solgel process. They were 1) complexation of europium salts by N-tetrasubstituted 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) derivatives bearing four hydrolysable Si(OEt)3 groups, followed by hydrolysis and polycondensation of these complexes; and 2) hydrolysis and polycondensation of N-tetrasubstituted silylated cyclam derivatives, then incorporation of europium salts directly into the hybrid materials. The coordination mode of europium salt…
Robust Lanthanoid Picolinate-Based Coordination Polymers for Luminescence and Sensing Applications
2021
Picolinate-based segmented dianionic ligands L12– (5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl)picolinate) and L22– (5,5′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dipicolinate) have been used in the synthesis of the highly robust and luminescent europium(III) coordination polymers [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(H2O)2(L1)2] (1) and [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(L2)2]·H2O·CH3COOH (2). Both 1 and 2 exhibit high selectivity for detection of nitroaromatic compounds since they act as quenchers of the Eu3+ emission. Stern–Volmer plots, using nitrobenzene as a quencher, yielded values of KSV = 150 M–1 and 160 M–1 for 1 and 2, respectively. Luminescence studies in the presence of different metal ions indicate a high selectivity for Fe3+ detection, with KSV values of 47…
Chemical Applications of Mössbauer Spectroscopy
2012
The Tutorial Lecture begins with a brief recapitulation of the hyperfine interactions and the relevant parameters observable in a Mossbauer spectrum. The main chapter with selected examples of chemical applications of Mossbauer spectroscopy follows and is subdivided into sections on: basic information on structure and bonding; switchable molecules (thermal spin transition in mono- and oligonuclear coordination compounds, light-induced spin transition, nuclear-decay-induced spin transition, spin transition in metallomesogens); mixed-valency in biferrocenes and other iron coordination compounds, and in an europium intermetallic compound; electron transfer in Prussian blue-analog complexes; mo…
New Studies and a Reinvestigation on [4+2] Cycloadditions of (−)-Thebaine: Asymmetrical Diels-Alder Reactions with a Conformationally Fixed Chiral Di…
1993
Some novel Diels-Alder reactions of the opium alkaloid (−)-thebaine (1) as an electron-rich diene and a reinvestigation of its reactions with cyclic and acyclic dienophiles are described. The π-facial selectivity has been studied on the basis of structural analyses of the cycloadducts. Some related results on [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of 1-methoxy-1,3-cyclohexadiene (11) are also reported.
