Shallow water rogue waves in nonlinear optical fibers

2013

The dynamics of extreme waves, often known as freak or rogue waves (RW), is presently a subject of intensive research. In oceanography, RW are mostly known as a sudden deep-water event which is responsible for ship wreakages and can be modeled by the 1D Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE). In this framework, an ideal testbed is provided by optical pulse propagation in nonlinear optical fibers: extreme solitary wave emissions during supercontinuum generation or the first experimental observation of the Peregrine solitons have indeed been carried out exploiting the modulation instability occuring in fibers with anomalous dispersion.

Fiber optical parametric polarizer

2013

In this work, a fiber-optical parametric polarizer (FOPP), i.e., a polarizing device based on parametric amplification in optical fibers is demonstrated. This was achieved for both the signal and idler waves with 25 dB gain over a broad bandwidth using the strong polarization-dependent gain (PDG) of parametric amplifiers. The experimental values of the degree of polarization (DOP) calculated from the Stokes parameters are indicated above each sphere. The gain spectra are also plotted with the parametric gain and the signal OSNR in insets. The Poincare sphere represents the three normalized Stokes parameters (S1,S2,S3) in unit radius. Results show that he DOP of the signal significantly incr…

Rectifications optique et thermique générées à l'aide de jonctions tunnel planaires électromigrées

2017

The work described in this manuscrit consists in studying the optical rectification within plasmo-electronic devices. These ultra-compact optically adressed components with an ultra-fast time response induces a conversion of the incident field into a static current. The monolithically-integrated electronically optical antenna requires a detailed knowledge of nanoscale thermal and electrical transport mechanisms. This work also aims to discuss all thermal effects inherent in the optical excitation of these connected devices, in order to identify the different contributions in the generation of a photo-assisted current.

A near-field actuated optical nanocavity

2008

International audience; We demonstrate here that switching and tuning of a nanocavity resonance can be achieved by approaching a sub-micrometer tip inside its evanescent near-field. The resonance energy is tuned over a wide spectral range (Δλ/λ~10-3) without significant deterioration of the cavity peak-transmittance and of the resonance linewidth. Such a result is achieved by taking benefits from a weak tip-cavity interaction regime in which the tip behaves as a pure optical path length modulator.

Le dioxyde de titane : un matériau nouveau pour la photonique à 1.55 µm et à 2 µm

2018

In the next decades, the limits of current optical communication systems will be reached unless new solutions are adopted. On of them is the use of a new spectral range around 2 µm enabled by the emergence of thulium-doped fiber amplifiers. In this thesis, we will focus on it in the context of very short distances transmissions on photonic chips. Various materials, mainly titanium dioxide (TiO2), will be explored. This thesis work has two main objectives. On the one hand, it aims to demonstrate that a material relatively unexplored, titanium dioxide, is promising for telecom applications by comparing it to more mature plateforms. On the other hand, it tends to introduce the spectral band aro…

Temporal analogue of the Fresnel diffraction by a phase plate in linear and nonlinear optical fibers

2021

The analogy existing between spatial and temporal optics has motivated many studies to interpret spatial phenomena in the domain of ultrafast optics [1] . Indeed, dispersion and one-dimensional diffraction may share the same mathematical formalism. Temporal analogues of common optical systems have been proposed such as lenses, imaging systems, diffraction gratings, which opens up a whole range of new possibilities for ultrafast photonics.

Generation of aperiodic picosecond pulses sequences from incoherent optical waves

2007

We present an original method to generate optical pulses trains with random time-interval values from incoherent broadband sources. Our technique relies on the remarkable properties of a line made of cascaded SPM-based optical regenerators.

Transition dynamics in optical fiber amplifiers operating in the normal dispersion regime

2011

Over the past decade there has been large interest in ultrafast optical fiber amplifiers operating in the normal dispersion regime because of the discovery that, high-energy pulses with a parabolic intensity profile and linear frequency chirp are the asymptotic solution to the system for arbitrary initial conditions [1]. These so-called “similariton” solutions propagate in a self-similar manner, holding certain relations (scaling) between pulse power, duration, and chirp parameter. While the asymptotic similariton features seem now well understood [1], the physics of the transition to this solution from arbitrary initial pulses has not been fully explored yet (most of the previous attempts …

Caustic Interpretation of the Abruptly Autofocusing Vortex beams

2021

We propose an effective scheme to interpret the abruptly autofocusing vortex beam. In our scheme, a set of analytical formulae are deduced to well predict not only the global caustic, before and after the focal plane, but also the focusing properties of the abruptly autofocusing vortex beam, including the axial position as well as the diameter of focal ring. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with both numerical simulation and experimental results. Besides, we apply our analytical technique to the fine manipulation of the focusing properties with a scaling factor. This set of methods would be beneficial to a broad range of applications such as particle trapping and micromachi…

Vibrating temporal soliton pairs

2007

The study of temporal multisoliton complexes in dissipative systems is of potential interest for the development of new schemes of optical data transport and processing. In the present work, we thus consider pulsations of a soliton pair that consist mainly in the oscillations of the temporal separation and phase relationship between the two pulses, so that the relative motion of the two bound solitons resembles a vibrational motion.
