Numerous aspects of the physical chemistry of colloidal systems are conditioned by the solid–liquid interface, and this is also the case for hydrated cement systems. Estimating the surface area is thus essential for studying the kinetics of cement hydration and admixture adsorption. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation techniques have already proven useful for this objective, but, for hydrating cements at early ages, it is necessary to know the surface relaxivities of all of the individual phases present to correctly interpret the relaxation data. Intrinsic Acidity of Surface Sites in Calcium Silicate Hydrates and Its Implication to Their Electrokinetic Properties

Calcium Silicate Hydrates (C–S–H) are the major hydration products of portland cement paste. The accurate description of acid–base reactions at the surface of C–S–H particles is essential for both understanding the ion sorption equilibrium in cement and prediction of mechanical properties of the hardened cement paste. The effects of lasers on bond strength to ceramic materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Lasers have recently been introduced as an alternative means of conditioning dental ceramic surfaces in order to enhance their adhesive strength to cements and other materials. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review and quantitatively analyze the available literature in order to determine which bond protocols and laser types are the most effective. A search was conducted in the Pubmed, Embase and Scopus databases for papers published up to April 2017. PRISMA guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis were followed. Coprecipitation synthesis of Nd:YAG nanopowders II: the effect of Nd dopant addition the on Luminescence Properties

Abstract Nanopowders of Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Y3Al5O12, YAG) doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG, 0.2–24.0 at.%) were prepared using the co-precipitation method followed by an annealing treatment up to 950 °C. For a concentration of neodymium lower than 3.2 at.% the materials were found constituted by the garnet phase according to X-ray diffraction investigations. However, at higher neodymium loading the hexagonal and monoclinic forms of yttrium aluminium oxides were found together with the garnet phase. In vitro experimental study of bonding between aluminium oxide ceramics and resin cements

To evaluate bond strengths of different resin cements to two aluminum oxide-based ceramics. Methods: One hundred ten ceramic cylinders were produced and given four different surface treatments. Resin cement cylinders were then bonded to the ceramic cylinders using different resin cements and the bond strength was determined by shear testing to the breaking point. We were thus able to obtain results for the different combinations of porcelain, surface treatments and cements. Aluminium nitrate ceramics: a potential UV dosemeter material.

The ceramic material AlN-Y 2 O 3 is proposed as a potential ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dosemeter using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermally stimulated luminescence (TL). Experimental studies have shown that AlN ceramics exhibit attractive characteristics suitable for practical UV dosimetry applications. The features are: (1) the spectral sensitivity covers the 200-350 nm range, in the UV-B region it is similar to that of human skin; (2) the angular dependence of the incident radiation follows the cosine law; (3) high yields of both UVR-induced OSL and TL signals compared to those of Al 2 O 3 :C; and (4) a large dynamic range TL signal (5 orders of magnitude). Bond strength evaluation of the veneering-core ceramics bonds.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the bond of veneering porcelain to a ceramic core in bilayered ceramics was similar to that of the metal ceramic control of well known behaviour. Six groups of nine specimens each were fabricated, whose dimensions were 15 mm long and 8 mm in diameter at the core, and 2 mm long and 8 mm in diameter for the veneer. EXAFS study of ceria–lanthana-based TWC promoters prepared by sol–gel routes

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments at the Ce K- and La K-edges were performed on ceria–lanthana–alumina three-way catalysts promoters prepared by sol–gel routes, in order to investigate the effect of lanthanum doping on the ceria structure. The formation of Ce1−xLaxO2−x/2 solid solution, already observed by X-ray diffraction, was confirmed by EXAFS analysis, while no experimental evidence of a Ce–Al interaction was found. In presence of cerium and aluminum, lanthanum is involved in the formation of solid solution with CeO2 and of La–Al compounds.
