Evaluation of touchscreen assistive technology for visually disabled users
2017
Touchscreen assistive technology is designed to support speech interaction between visually disabled people and mobile devices, allowing the use of a choreography of gestures to interact with a touch user interface. This paper presents the evaluation of VoiceOver, a screen reader in Apple Inc. products, made in the research project Visually impaired users touching the screen- A user evaluation of assistive technology together with six visually disabled test participants. The aim was to identify challenges related to the performance of the gestures for screen interaction and evaluate the system response to the gestures. The main results showed that most of the hand gestures were easy to perf…
Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in Spain: The Spanish National Health Service under scrutiny
2012
Early in the 2000s, a countrywide health services research initiative was launched under the acronym of Atlas VPM: Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in the Spanish National Health System. This initiative aimed at describing systematic and unwarranted variations in medical practice at geographic level-building upon the seminal experience of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. The paper aims at explaining the Spanish Atlas experience, built upon the pioneer Dartmouth inspiration. A few selected examples will be used along the following sections to illustrate the outlined conceptual framework, the different factors that may affect variation, and some methodological challenges.
Dietary prevention of visual function and cognitive decline by omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in Senescence Accelerated Mouse P8 (SAM P8)
2008
International audience; Purpose: : Neuronal tissues such as the brain and the retina contain elevated amounts of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA concentrations are known to decrease in the aging brain and are associated with cognitive decline. The senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAM P8) is a mouse model for aging that exhibits deficits in cognitive performances as well as alterations of retinal functionality (ARVO 2004 E-abstract 797). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a dietary supplementation with DHA on mood, cognition and visual functionality of SAM P8 during aging. Methods: : SAM P8 mice we…
An evaluation of recent local image descriptors for real-world applications of image matching
2019
This paper discusses and compares the best and most recent local descriptors, evaluating them on increasingly complex image matching tasks, encompassing planar and non-planar scenarios under severe viewpoint changes. This evaluation, aimed at assessing descriptor suitability for real-world applications, leverages the concept of approximated overlap error as a means to naturally extend to non-planar scenes the standard metric used for planar scenes. According to the evaluation results, most descriptors exhibit a gradual performance degradation in the transition from planar to non-planar scenes. The best descriptors are those capable of capturing well not only the local image context, but als…
Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the in vitro dehydration process of hydrogel contact lenses
2007
Purpose: To investigate the in vitro dehydration process of conventional hydrogel and silicone-hydrogel contact lens materials. Methods: Eight conventional hydrogel and five silicone-hydrogel contact lenses were dehydrated under controlled environmental conditions on an analytical balance. Data were taken at 1-min intervals and dehydration curves of cumulative dehydration (CD), valid dehydration (VD), and dehydration rate (DR) were obtained. Several quantitative descriptors of the dehydration process were obtained by further processing of the information. Results: Duration of phase I (r 2 5 0.921), CD at end of phase I (r 2 5 0.971), time to achieve a DR of 1%/min (r 2 5 0.946) were stron…
Surface AFM microscopy of unworn and worn samples of silicone hydrogel contact lenses
2008
Abstract: Purpose. To evaluate the qualitative and quantitative topographic changes in the surface of worn contact lenses (CLs) of different materials using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Methods. The topography of five different CL materials was evaluated withAFM over a surface of 25 lm2 according to previously published experimental setup. Average roughness (Ra) and root mean square (Rms) values were obtained for unworn and worn samples. Results. The Ra value increased for balafilcon A (11.62–13.68 nm for unworn and worn samples, respectively), lotrafilcon A (3.67–15.01 nm for unworn and worn samples, respectively), lotrafilcon B (4.08–8.42 nm for unworn and worn samples, respectively), g…
Two-year retrospective analysis of the international impact of Journal of Optometry: part II
2011
The Journal of Optometry – Peer-reviewed Journal of the Spanish General Council of Optometrists- was launched in March 2008 publishing the first issue by September 2008. It is now reaching 2.5 years of activity in spreading clinical and scientific knowledge in the field of Optometry and Visual Science and related areas. Despite this short path within the international scientific publication scenario, it is appropriate to stop and reflect about the challenges, achievements and the numbers that are making J Optom a reference in this competitive area. In this editorial we will discuss the steps followed to setup the journal and the actual international impact in terms of audience from the read…
<title>Assessment of ocular stereovision prevalence and eye dominance stability</title>
2005
The paper reports on the development of the equipment for studies of the eye dominance and ocular stereoprevalence by using black-and-white and color stereostimuli. The stereostimuli are separated either by color-filter goggles or phase separating liquid-crystal-shutter goggles. The stability of the stereoprevalence is studied by artificial step-by-step deterioration of the retinal image quality, particularly in the dominant eye. The stimuli are blurred using spatial Gaussian filtering. The polymer-dispersed-liquid-crystal cell placed in front of the dominant eye induces a controllable light scattering. The stimuli-blurring and light-scattering methods exhibit different influence on the eye…

A Controllable Text Simplification System for the Italian Language
2021
Text simplification is a non-trivial task that aims at reducing the linguistic complexity of written texts. Researchers have studied the problem by proposing new methodologies for addressing the English language, but other languages, like the Italian one, are almost unexplored. In this paper, we give a contribution to the enhancement of the Automated Text Simplification research by presenting a deep learning-based system, inspired by a state of the art system for the English language, capable of simplifying Italian texts. The system has been trained and tested by leveraging the Italian version of Newsela; it has shown promising results by achieving a SARI value of 30.17.
