Tear 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-Based Metabolomics Application to the Molecular Diagnosis of Aqueous Tear Deficiency and Me…

2020

<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a major cause of signs and symptoms related to dry eyes (DE) and eyelid inflammation. We investigated the composition of human tears by metabolomic approaches in patients with aqueous tear deficiency and MGD. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Participants in this prospective, case-control pilot study were split into patients with aqueous tear deficiency and MGD (DE-MGD [<i>n</i> = 15]) and healthy controls (CG; <i>n</i> = 20). Personal interviews, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and ophthalmic examinations were performed. Reflex tears collected by capillarity were pr…

Model Eye Incorporating a Manually Tunable Polymer Lens and Microfluidics Chamber for Simulation of Vitreous Floaters

2016

a model eye incorporating a manually tunable lens and microfluidics chamber for simulation of vitreous floaters has been described. Aberrations correspond to average values in population and diffraction effects could be observed.

Effect of the color of the intraocular lens on optical and visual quality

2014

Purpose: To analyze the optical quality of intraocular lenses (IOL) with an orange (PC440Y) and a yellow (SN60AT) filter, and correlate these results with the visual quality of patients with these implants. Setting: Fisabio Oftalmología Médica, Valencia, Spain. Design: Randomized prospective study. Materials and Methods: The IOL optical quality was determined using the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the spectral transmission. The visual quality of 87 eyes with cataract (51 with orange filter and 36 with yellow filter) was determined by best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity function (CSF) under photopic and mesopic conditions. To analyze the results, we use a S…

Myopia and Level of Education

2014

Purpose To analyze the association between myopia and educational level in an adult European cohort. Design Population-based cross-sectional study. Participants A cohort of the Gutenberg Health Study, including 4658 eligible enrollees between 35 and 74 years of age. Methods We applied a standardized protocol entailing a comprehensive questionnaire; thorough ophthalmic, general, cardiovascular, and psychological examinations; and laboratory tests, including genetic analyses. We documented achievement levels in school education and post-school professional education. The spherical equivalent (SE) was determined by noncycloplegic autorefractometry. We fitted mixed linear models including age, …

The Prevalence of Amblyopia in Germany

2015

Amblyopia is a condition in which reduced visual acuity is not directly caused by an organic defect (1). Amblyopia can develop when an infant or small child suffers from strabismus. Although both eyes are healthy, different images are formed on each fovea centralis (where vision is sharpest) and on other corresponding locations on the retina; this is in contrast to individuals without strabismus. To prevent double vision the child’s brain suppresses the image produced by one eye. Complete visual ability cannot develop in this eye during the sensitive phase of visual development (2). Approximately half of amblyopia cases (3) are caused by uncorrected higher refractive errors, which are frequ…

Visual fields in a chloroquine treatment

2014

Purpose: In this study, we describe contrast sensitivity losses in the visual field of a patient affected by chloroquine toxicity, measured with stimuli favoring different visual mechanisms. We have compared these results with those of other, usual clinical tests. Methods: The vision of a patient who underwent ten years of chloroquine treatment was analyzed by a battery of clinical tests: visual acuity (VA), Amsler’s grid, Farnsworth–Munsell 100-hue test, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, multifocal electroretinogram (ERG), white-on-white and red-on-white Humphrey perimetries, chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity perimetry tests, and fluorescein angiography. Measurement…
