School Teaching in Germany Between Tradition and Innovation: The Concept of the Outdoor School

It is a well known fact that school is seen as having a spatial characteristic, being associated to indoor learning. The aim of this chapter is to underlined the idea that learning and educational processes can take place in different settings, and to offer other experiences that the traditional classroom with its specific conditions largely neglected. The dimensions of space, time, and body are re-evaluated from the perspective of outdoor education which faces children (and teachers) with new, sometimes challenging, and adventurous experiences that contrast with an everyday routine of school instruction.
The ‘outdoor school’ as a school improvement process: empirical results from the perspective of teachers in Germany

ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on school improvement processes in the context of weekly curricular-based teaching and learning activities outside the classroom – known as Drausenschule or ‘outdoor school’ – in three German primary schools. Qualitative interviews were conducted with three teachers two years after implementing the ‘outdoor school’. The teachers’ experiences show that the implementation and (ongoing) development of an outdoor school affects (1) teaching as such; (2) the school staff, and (3) the entire school as an organisation. The three areas are interlinked in different ways and the school improvement process cannot be approached from the perspective of any one area alone.

Investing in a PhD : Human capital or cultural capital ?

The first part is mainly devoted to the study of the theoretical positions of Gary Becker and Pierre Bourdieu, the main theme being the vision of education as a capital. The notions of human capital (Becker) and cultural capital (Bourdieu) are presented, compared and criticised, each one being replaced in its theoretical context. The second part is devoted to empirical analyses concerning the PhD. We first try to assess the monetary return on a PhD. Abstract This paper assesses German students’ adjustment strategies after a six months expeditionary learning programme on high seas with intercultural encounters in Cuba and Costa Rica. A postal survey (N = 128, global response quote rg = .44) has been conducted with students having returned from four separate learning expeditions from 2008 to 2012. Based on narratives on six choral conductors’ unfolding careers, the article investigates significant moments in professional trajectories – turning points – and how these shaped ongoing practices. The empirical material comprises interviews with conductors that represent different pre-conducting platforms – musicologist, music therapist, music educator, instrumentalist, singer, and church musician. This paper seeks to address assumptions on the effectiveness of fieldwork as a mode of learning in geography. This is approached from an international perspective, both in review of available evidence, which demonstrates a need for rigorous research into the issue, and in providing preliminary findings of research into the value of fieldwork from universities across three continents.
