Intraoral lipomas: A clinicopathological study of 43 cases, including four cases of spindle cell/pleomorphic subtype

2018

Background The aim of this study was to describe the clinicopathological characteristics of 43 intraoral lipomas and classify them according to their microscopic variants. Material and Methods All the cases of intraoral lipomas diagnosed at an Oral Pathology service were selected for the study. Clinical data, such as age, gender, location, time of evolution, clinical presentation, clinical hypothesis of diagnosis, and treatment, were collected from the clinical files. Results Of the 43 cases analyzed, 24 (55.8%) occurred in women. The mean age was 77.4 years. The most affected site was the buccal mucosa (22 cases, 51.1%). The mean lesion size was 1.7 cm. Twenty-three cases (53.5%) were clas…

Oral bilateral collagenous fibroma : a previously unreported case and literature review

2018

Collagenous fibroma, also known as desmoplastic fibroblastoma, is a rare benign slow growing tumor particularly uncommon in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of an oral collagenous fibroma as well as to compare this data with those reported in an English-literature review. The thirteenth case of collagenous fibroma in the oral cavity and the first to present clinically as a bilateral mass was described. A 48-years-old female patient was referred to a School of Dentistry, complaining about an asymptomatic swelling on the hard palate, lasting around ten years. The intraoral examination revealed two well-defined mass, bilaterally …

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, squamous cell carcinoma and axillary metastasis.

2009

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an aggressive form of oral leukoplakia with multifocal presentation, high rates of recurrence and malignant transformation. Although development of regional lymph node metastasis is relatively frequent in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, axillary metastasis is quite uncommon. This paper presents a case of a 64-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with PVL and developed five oral squamous cell carcinomas and later an axillary lymph node metastasis.

A possible inflammatory reaction in a lateral neck cyst (branchial cyst) because of odontogenic infection

1994

Abstract We present the case of a woman who suffered from an acutely infected diffuse mass in the right neck. This mass had grown rapidly after difficult extraction of a tooth. Histologic analysis of the excised material revealed a lateral neck cyst with a lymph node that showed signs of an acute inflammation near the cyst. These findings support the theory that a preexisting lateral neck cyst may be “activated” by an intraoral inflammation. The different theories of the origin of lateral neck cysts are presented and discussed in the context of the case description.

Benign epithelial oral lesions – association with human papillomavirus

2019

Background The presence of human papilloma virus in benign oral lesions has been studied by different techniques obtaining extremely variable results. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of human papillomavirus in 83 cases of benign hyperplastic epithelial oral lesions. Material and Methods Eighty-three oral lesions with clinical or histopathological features suggestive of HPV infection were retrieved from the files of four oral pathology services. Demographic data were obtained from patient´s medical charts. All cases had available clinical image, H&E preparations and paraffin blocks with enough tissue for HPV detection by in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemica…

Oral soft tissue biopsies in Oporto, Portugal: An eight year retrospective analysis

2015

Background: The diseases that affect the oral cavity are wide and diverse, comprising a broad spectrum of either benign or malignant lesions. However, few histological-based studies were performed for the evaluation of oral cavity lesions, and very few directed to oral soft tissue pathology. The aim of this study was to carry out pioneering research, within a Portuguese population, to determine the frequency and characteristics of oral malignancies, po - tential malignant disorders, and soft benign tissues pathologies submitted for biopsy in a north Portugal (Oporto) hospital population. Material and Methods: We performed a retrospective study of soft tissue, oral cavity biopsies, in a hosp…

A review of 413 salivary gland tumours in the head and neck region.

2013

Objectives: Salivary gland tumours (SGTs) are a group of heterogeneous lesions with complex clinico-pathological characteristics and distinct biological behaviours. Previous studies have reported geographic variations in site distribution, incidence and histological types of SGTs. The aim of this study was to describe the demography of SGTs seen at a tertiary health centre and compare findings with previous studies. Study design: Data on SGTs from archives of the Department of Oral Pathology and the Department of Pathology, University College Hospital Ibadan were retrieved. Information about histological types, age, sex and location were analyzed using SPSS for Window (version 20.0; SPSS In…

Odontogenic tumours: A review of 266 cases.

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumours at a tertiary hospital in Ibadan, as well as to study the various histologic types based on WHO 2005 classification and to compare results from this study with those of previous studies. Study design: The records of the Oral Pathology Department of University College Hospital were reviewed. Lesions diagnosed as odontogenic tumours were categorized into four groups based on WHO 2005 classification and were analyzed for age, sex and site using SPSS for Window (version 18.0; SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL) and frequency tables were generated. Results: Two hundred and sixty six (41.7%) cases of odontogenic tum…

Immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 in benign and malignant salivary gland tumors

2010

Objectives: The present study was undertaken to assess and compare the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 in selected benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. Study Design: A total of 50 cases of buffered formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissues of previously diagnosed cases of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors from the archives of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology, SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, India, were taken for the study. The immunohistochemical staining procedure was performed using monoclonal anti Bcl-2 antibody, as directed by the manufacturer. Results: Thirty six cases (72%) out of 50 cases showed a positive e…
