The preferences of saproxylic beetle species for different dead wood types created in forest restoration treatments

2010

Restoration by imitating natural disturbances is widely practised in boreal forests to increase the availability of habitats for specialized species. We studied the abundance and species richness of saproxylic beetles on different types of created dead wood during 2 years after restoration. The study was conducted on areas of a large-scale experiment in which Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forests were restored by controlled burning and partial harvesting with down wood retention in southern Finland. More beetle species were attracted to spruces than to birches and more species were attracted to burnt trees than to unburnt trees killed by girdling. Birch-living species consistent…

Is globalization a fair process? Globalizers vs. globalized

2018

Globalization means that domestic economies are becoming more and more intertwined and mutually dependent on each other. Unfortunately these globalization processes are asymmetrical. This determines that there are different groups of participants of globalization - globalizers, active participants and marginalized. It seems quite obvious that globalizers are doing better economically than the others. But is this really true? The aim of this paper is to answer the question, if more globalized countries are really doing better economically than less globalized. To do this there was an analysis of relations between globalization and chosen economic indexes (inflation, unemployment, GDP per cap…

Long-Term Behavioral Programming Induced by Peripuberty Stress in Rats Is Accompanied by GABAergic-Related Alterations in the Amygdala

2014

Stress during childhood and adolescence is a risk factor for psychopathology. Alterations in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, have been found following stress exposure and fear experiences and are often implicated in anxiety and mood disorders. Abnormal amygdala functioning has also been detected following stress exposure and is also implicated in anxiety and social disorders. However, the amygdala is not a unitary structure; it includes several nuclei with different functions and little is known on the potential differences the impact of early life stress may have on this system within different amygdaloid nuclei. We aimed here to evaluate pote…

Quasi cento a…

Abiotic versus biotic iron mineral transformation studied by a miniaturized backscattering Mössbauer spectrometer (MIMOS II), X-ray diffraction and R…

2017

Abstract Searching for biomarkers or signatures of microbial transformations of minerals is a critical aspect for determining how life evolved on Earth, and whether or not life may have existed in other planets, including Mars. In order to solve such questions, several missions to Mars have sought to determine the geochemistry and mineralogy on the Martian surface. This research includes the two miniaturized Mossbauer spectrometers (MIMOS II) on board the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which have detected a variety of iron minerals on Mars, including magnetite (Fe2+Fe3+2O4) and goethite (α-FeO(OH)). On Earth, both minerals can derive from microbiological activity (e.g. thro…

Decay pathways of small gold clusters

2001

The decay pathway competition between monomer and dimer evaporation of photoexcited cluster ions Au + n, n = 2-27, has been investigated by photodissociation of size-selected gold clusters stored in a Penning trap. For n > 6 the two decay pathways are distinguished by their experimental signature in time-resolved measurements of the dissociation. For the smaller clusters, simple fragment spectra were used. As in the case of the other copper-group elements, even-numbered gold cluster ions decay exclusively by monomer evaporation, irrespective of their size. For small odd-size gold clusters, dimer evaporation is a competitive alternative, and the smaller the odd-sized clusters, the more likel…

Improving marine protected area governance through collaboration and co-production.

2020

Marine protected areas (MPAs) socio-ecological effectiveness depends on a number of management and governance elements, among which stakeholder engagement and community support play key roles. Collaborative conservation initiatives that engage stakeholders in action research and knowledge co-production processes can enhance management and governance of MPAs. To design effective strategies aimed at reconciling biodiversity conservation and management of sustainable human uses, it is key to assess how local communities respond to such initiatives and identify the set of contextual factors, institutional, local and individual, potentially affecting these responses. This paper presents the appr…

Effect of inoculation with selected Bradyrhizobium spp. on the survival and growth of Acacia mangium saplings after 20 months in the field

1999

This work was designed to test the long-term effect of the inoculation of #Acacia mangium# seedlings with 10 selected strains of #Bradyrhizobium spp.#. The percentage of survival of seedlings inoculated with any of the #Bradyrhizobium# strains was increased by 10% as compared to the control plants. However, out of the 10 #Bradyrhizobium# strains tested, only 3 strains, Aust l3c, Lu 4 and Tel 8, belonging to the phylogenelic group 1, significandy enhanced the growth of #A. mangium# after 20 months in the field. For the first time, inoculation with indigenous Malaysian strains #Bradyrhizobium# such as Tel 8 and Lu 4 at the seedling stage is reported to produce enhanced and sustained growth an…
