The Pseudomonas sp. P-1 strain, isolated from heavily petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, was investigated for its capability to degrade hydrocarbons and produce a biosurfactant. The strain degraded crude oil, fractions A5 and P3 of crude oil, and hexadecane (27, 39, 27 and 13 % of hydrocarbons added to culture medium were degraded, respectively) but had no ability to degrade phenanthrene. Additionally, the presence of gene-encoding enzymes responsible for the degradation of alkanes and naphthalene in the genome of the P-1 strain was reported. Organization of intensive cardiac care units in Europe: Results of a multinational survey

Background: The present survey aims to describe the intensive cardiac care unit organization and admission policies in Europe. Methods: A total of 228 hospitals (61% academic) from 27 countries participated in this survey. In addition to the organizational aspects of the intensive cardiac care units, including classification of the intensive cardiac care unit levels, data on the admission diagnoses were gathered from consecutive patients who were admitted during a two-day period. Admission policies were evaluated by comparing illness severity with the intensive cardiac care unit level. Transcatheter radiofrequency perforation and stent implantation for palliation of pulmonary atresia in a 3060-g infant

In a 3060-g infant with fibromuscular pulmonary atresia an open right ventricular outflow tract was created by means of interventional cardiological methods. Following two inadvertent perforations without sequelae or clinical symptoms, radiofrequency perforation and subsequent balloon dilatation were successfully performed. The implantation of a Palmaz iliac stent led to a predictable communication between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

Study of the growth of ZnS nanoparticles in water/AOT/n-heptane microemulsions by UV-absorption spectroscopy

Abstract ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized at 25°C using water-containing AOT reversed micelles as nanoreactors and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy. The time dependence of the spectra emphasizes a slow growing process of the ZnS nanoparticles coupled with a change of their photophysical properties. Both processes are well described by power laws. The nanoparticle size can be controlled by the molar ratio R ( R =[water]/[AOT]), i.e. by the micellar size. The deposits obtained by evaporation of the volatile components of the microemulsions are found to be composed of a surfactant matrix containing ZnS nanoparticles smaller and more stable than that in the corresponding microemulsions.

We describe an operational procedure to build an integrated information system (IIS) for monitoring and evaluating the performance of public broadcasting corporations (PBC). The procedure grounds in a conceptual framework derived from evaluation models, and consists of two stages. The first stage is the selection, through expert judgment, of simple indicators that illustrate the most relevant aspects of the corporations. The second stage is the definition of a system of indicators related to each level of the hierarchy of objectives planned by the corporations. The system of indicators has two levels. Implications for dark matter direct detection in the presence of LIGO-motivated primordial black holes

We discuss formation of dark matter (DM) mini-halos around primordial black holes (PBHs) and its implication on DM direct detection experiments, including axion searches. Motivated by LIGO observations, we consider $f_{\textrm{DM}} \simeq 0.01$ as the fraction of DM in PBHs with masses $10 M_{\odot} - 70 M_{\odot}$. In this case, we expect the presence of dressed PBHs after Milky Way halo formation with mini-halo masses peaked around $M_{\textrm{halo}} \sim (50-55) M_{\textrm{PBH}}$. We analyze the effect of tidal forces acting on dressed PBHs within the Milky Way galaxy. We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 data set. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions.cA template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection.
