Non-Monotonic Concentration Dependence of the Electro-Phoretic Mobility of Charged Spheres in Realistic Salt Free Suspensions

Using super-heterodyne Doppler velocimetry with multiple scattering correction, we extend the opti-cally accessible range of concentrations in experiments on colloidal electro-kinetics. We here meas-ured the electro-phoretic mobility and the DC conductivity of aqueous charged sphere suspensions covering about three orders of magnitude in particle concentrations and transmissions as low as 40%. The extended concentration range for the first time allows the demonstration of a non-monotonic con-centration dependence of the mobility for a single particle species. Characterization of a cryogenic ion guide at IGISOL

A small volume cryogenic ion guide has been characterized at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, as a prototype to verify whether there are any major obstacles to the use of high-density cryogenic helium gas for the stopping and extraction of high-energy ions from a large volume cryogenic ion catcher. The expected temperature scaling of the mass flow through the ion guide has been confirmed, showing that for the same helium density, the differential pumping requirements are less stringent for cryogenic operation. Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs) require flexible probability models that can be efficiently learned and sampled. Autoencoders (AE) are generative stochastic networks with these desired properties. We integrate a special type of AE, the Denoising Autoencoder (DAE), into an EDA and evaluate the performance of DAE-EDA on several combinatorial optimization problems with a single objective. We asses the number of fitness evaluations as well as the required CPU times. Continued improvements on existing reconstruction methods are vital to the success of high-energy physics experiments, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In IceCube, further challenges arise as the detector is situated at the geographic South Pole where computational resources are limited. However, to perform real-time analyses and to issue alerts to telescopes around the world, powerful and fast reconstruction methods are desired. Deep neural networks can be extremely powerful, and their usage is computationally inexpensive once the networks are trained. Chalcogenide thin films for direct resistors fabrication and trimming

Abstract The fabrication of thin film resistors based on Ge–Sb–Te chalcogenide alloys is proposed. By exploiting the phase change properties of the deposited film, a laser beam is used for inducing a transition from high to low resistivity along selected paths. Conductivity changes as high as four orders of magnitude can be routinely achieved. This candidates the technique for maskless fabrication of compact precision resistors for a variety of applications.
Liquid-phase alkali-doping of individual carbon nanotube field-effect transistors observed in real-time

The carbon nanotube (CNT) is known to be very sensitive to changes in its surrounding environment. Our study is on the effects of mild, liquid-phase alkali-doping on electronic transport in individual CNTs. We find clear and consistent reversal from p- to n-type behavior, with all seven investigated CNT field-effect transistors (FETs) retaining a similar ON/OFF ratio and subthreshold slope. We have also measured the realtime electronic response during liquid-phase doping, and demonstrate detection of alkali cations with a signal response that ranges over more than three orders of magnitude. The most commonly measured marker of oxidative DNA damage is 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua) or its deoxyribonucleoside (8-oxodGuo). Published estimates of the concentration of 8-oxoGua/8-oxodGuo in DNA of normal human cells vary over a range of three orders of magnitude. Analysis by chromatographic methods (GC-MS, HPLC with electrochemical detection (ECD) or HPLC-MS/MS) is beset by the problem of adventitious oxidation of guanine during sample preparation. New ephemeris of the ADC source 2A 1822-371: a stable orbital-period derivative over 30 years

We report on a timing of the eclipse arrival times of the low mass X-ray binary and X-ray pulsar 2A 1822-371 performed using all available observations of the Proportional Counter Array on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, XMM-Newton pn, and Chandra. These observations span the years from 1996 to 2008. Combining these eclipse arrival time measurements with those already available covering the period from 1977 to 1996, we obtain an orbital solution valid for more than thirty years. The time delays calculated with respect to a constant orbital period model show a clear parabolic trend, implying that the orbital period in this source constantly increases with time at a rate $\dot P_orb = …
Derivation of the physical parameters of the jet in S5 0836+710 from stability analysis

A number of extragalactic jets show periodic structures at different scales that can be associated with growing instabilities. The wavelengths of the developing instability modes and their ratios depend on the flow parameters, so the study of those structures can shed light on jet physics at the scales involved. In this work, we use the fits to the jet ridgeline obtained from different observations of S5 B0836$+$710 and apply stability analysis of relativistic, sheared flows to derive an estimate of the physical parameters of the jet.
