A general protocol to access Mo(3)FeS(4)(4+) clusters selectively modified at the Fe coordination site is presented starting from the all-chlorine Mo(3)(FeCl)S(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(3) (1) [dmpe = 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphane-ethane)] cluster and tetrabutylammonium salts (n-Bu(4)NX) (X = CN(-), N(3)(-), and PhS(-)). Clusters Mo(3)(FeX)S(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(3) [X = CN(-) (2), N(3)(-) (3), and PhS(-) (4)] are prepared in high yield, and comparison of geometric and redox features upon modification of the coordination environment at the Fe site at parity of ligands at the Mo sites is also presented. Supramolecular complexes offer a new and efficient way for the monitoring and removal of many substances emanating from technical processes, fertilization, plant and animal protection, or e.g. chemotherapy. Such pollutants range from toxic or radioactive metal ions and anions to chemical side products, herbicides, pesticides to drugs including steroids, and include degradation products from natural sources. Perakine reductase (PR) catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of the aldehyde perakine to yield the alcohol raucaffrinoline in the biosynthetic pathway of ajmaline in Rauvolfia, a key step in indole alkaloid biosynthesis. Sequence alignment shows that PR is the founder of the new AKR13D subfamily and is designated AKR13D1. The x-ray structure of methylated His(6)-PR was solved to 2.31 Å. However, the active site of PR was blocked by the connected parts of the neighbor symmetric molecule in the crystal. Palladium(II)-Stabilized Pyridine-2-Diazotates: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Cytotoxicity Studies

Well-defined diazotates are scarce. Here we report the synthesis of unprecedented homoleptic palladium(II) diazotate complexes. The palladium(II)-mediated nitrosylation of 2-aminopyridines with NaNO2 results in the formation of metal-stabilized diazotates, which were found to be cytotoxic to human ovarian cancer cells.

Myelin basic protein (MBP) is predominantly found in the membranes of the myelin sheath of the central nervous system and is involved in important protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, divalent transition metal ions, especially Zn(2+) and Cu(2+), seem to directly affect the MBP-mediated formation and stabilization of the myelin sheath of the central nervous system. Proximal Cys(172) and Cys(192) in the large subunit of the photosynthetic enzyme Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase; EC 4.1.1.39) are evolutionarily conserved among cyanobacteria, algae and higher plants. Mutation of Cys(172) has been shown to affect the redox properties of Rubisco in vitro and to delay the degradation of the enzyme in vivo under stress conditions. Predictability and prediction of lowest observed adverse effect levels in a structurally heterogeneous set of chemicals

A database of chronic lowest observed adverse effect levels (LOAELs) for 234 compounds, previously compiled from different sources (Toxicology Letters79, 131-143 (1995)), was modelled using graph theoretical descriptors. This study reveals that data are not homogeneous. Only those data originating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports could be well modelled by multilinear regression (MLR) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In contrast, data available from the specific procedures of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) database introduced noise and did not render good models either alone, or in combination with the EPA data.

Evaluation of nitric oxide metabolites in a group of subjects with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract Aim To evaluate the concentration of metabolites (NO2−, NO3−) of nitric oxide (NO) in metabolic syndrome (MS). Materials and methods We enrolled 106 subjects (45 women and 61 men) with MS of which 43 (14 women and 27 men) with diabetes mellitus and 63 (31 women and 32 men) without diabetes mellitus, and 54 subjects (19 women and 35 men) as control group. The nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite + nitrate = NOx) were evaluated employing the Griess reagent. Results In the whole group of MS subjects was evident, in comparison with control group, a significant increase in NOx. Concise asymmetric synthesis of Linezolid through catalyzed Henry reaction

A new asymmetric synthesis of the antibiotic Linezolid was performed through a copper-catalyzed Henry reaction as the key step. The use of camphor-derived aminopyridine ligands helped to improve the yields of the chiral precursor and to obtain Linezolid in good overall yield and enantiomeric excess.
