SUSTAINABLE PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS: SHAPING A COHERENT SYSTEM FOR IMPLEMENTING AND MEASURING THE CONCEPT

2014

The paper addresses a topical issue at the international level due to the present pressure exerted by an increased public debt on most national budgets, but especially in Romania where there is also a large gap between the scientific literature regarding the concept of public organizations’ performance and international literature. The gap is not only in the literature, but also in practices. Performance measurement may generate benefits for public organization and for society as a whole; it may help to improve public management, only if an internal system geared towards achieving sustainable performance was implemented. Otherwise, if public policymakers will continue targeting only the mea…

2014

Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze intellectual capital (IC) measurement, management, and reporting practices at organizational level, with the aim to address a relevant research question: are IC reports used as accountability or as image-building tools? The article presents a single in-depth case study of an Italian nonprofit organization (NPO) which has been measuring and reporting its IC for several years. The research project was conducted using an interpretative approach, by analyzing organizational IC reports in the light of a framework, derived from corporate social responsibility (CSR) and IC literature, able to provide researchers with useful insights to interpret t…

The roles of job and worker restructuring in aggregate wage growth dynamics

2019

We propose an approach for measuring and analyzing the dynamics of the standard aggregate wage growth of macro statistics with micro data. Our method decomposes the aggregate wage growth into the wage growth of job stayers and into various terms related to job and worker restructuring. This method produces explicit expressions with clear interpretations for the various restructuring components. Using comprehensive longitudinal employer–employee data, we study how job and worker restructuring influence the aggregate wage growth and its cyclicality. The results highlight the importance of drawing a sharp distinction between job and worker restructuring in the analysis of aggregate wage growth…

2020

Improving safety culture and safety performance is a constant concern for companies operating in high-risk environments. For almost two decades, IDOCAL (the Research Institute of Personnel Psychology, Organizational Development and Quality of Working Life) has been contributing to advancing our understanding of these important concepts through theoretical development and empirical research. The objective of this article is to synthesize these contributions. Some of the most prominent are (1) the development of a framework for the evaluation of safety culture and its correlates based on the AMIGO model, (2) the establishment of the empowering leadership model as a valuable concept in safety …

Is individual- and school-level teacher burnout reduced by proactive strategies?

2021

There is provisional evidence that burnout may be contagious within professional communities via the crossover effect, referring to an inter-individual transmission of stress or strain. However, our understanding of effective means for tackling stressors is scarce. We tested a two-level path model to explore the interrelation between teachers’ proactive self- and co-regulative strategies and experienced burnout. The study sample comprised 1531 Finnish in-service teachers from 75 schools. The results showed that burnout symptoms varied both between individual teachers and between professional communities. Self- and co-regulative strategies serve partly different functions in regulating teach…
