A European Study of the Performance and Safety of MINIject in Patients With Medically Uncontrolled Open-angle Glaucoma (STAR-II)

2020

Precis In this European study (STAR-II), MINIject, a novel, ab-interno, supraciliary MIGS device, effectively lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for IOP-lowering medications in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Purpose To evaluate the safety and performance of a minimally invasive supraciliary glaucoma drainage device (MINIject DO627, iSTAR Medical SA, Wavre, Belgium) for surgical treatment of primary open angle glaucoma in patients refractory to topical hypotensive medications. Methods In a prospective, interventional, single-arm, multi-center, European study (STAR-II), MINIject was successfully implanted in a standalone procedure in 29 of 31 patients in 8 sites in 3 …

Peripheral corneal thickness and associated factors - results from the population-based German Gutenberg Health Study.

2021

PURPOSE Changes in peripheral corneal thickness are described in various corneal diseases such as corneal ectasia. However, few data exist describing the increase in corneal thickness from central to peripheral and reporting the normal distribution of corneal thickness in rings around the corneal centre. The aim of this study was to report these cornea characteristics and investigate associated factors in a population-based setting. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study is a prospective, population-based study examining participants in a 5-year follow-up (age range 40-80 years) using Scheimpflug imaging. Corneal thickness was assessed in each participant at the apex, as well as in the corneal …

Diagnostic Capability of a New Objective Method to Assess Meibomian Gland Visibility

2021

SIGNIFICANCE The diagnosis of dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is challenging. Measuring meibomian gland visibility may provide an additional objective method to diagnose MGD. PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the ability of new metrics to better diagnose MGD, based on measuring meibomian gland visibility. METHODS One hundred twelve healthy volunteers (age, 48.3 ± 27.5 years) were enrolled in this study. Ocular surface parameters were measured using the Oculus Keratograph 5M (Oculus GmbH, Wetzlar). Subjects were classified according to the presence or absence of MGD. New metrics based on the visibility of the meibomian glands were calculated and later compared betwee…

Quantitative anatomical differences in central corneal thickness values determined with scanning-slit corneal topography and noncontact specular micr…

2005

PURPOSE This study was designed to analyze the differences in central corneal thickness values determined with noncontact specular microscopy and scanning-slit corneal topography. The measurements were performed on the same eye. METHODS We analyzed the central corneal thickness values of 93 patients (n = 93) by means of noncontact specular microscopy (Topcon SP-2000P noncontact specular microscope, Topcon Corp., Tokyo, Japan) and scanning-slit corneal topography (Orbscan Topography System II, Orbscan Inc., Salt Lake City, UT). One experienced physician performed 3 consecutive central corneal thickness measurements with both devices. RESULTS The central corneal thickness values obtained by m…

Development and testing of new screening method for keratan sulfate in mucopolysaccharidosis IVA.

2004

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA), a progressive lysosomal storage disease, causes skeletal dysplasia through excessive storage of keratan sulfate (KS). We developed an ELISA-sandwich assay that used a MAb specific to KS. Forty-five blood and 59 urine specimens from MPS IVA patients (ages 1–65 y) were analyzed to determine whether KS concentration is a suitable marker for early diagnosis and longitudinal assessment of disease severity. Blood specimens were obtained from patients categorized as phenotypically severe (n = 36) and milder (n = 9). Urine specimens were also analyzed from patients categorized as severe (n = 56) and milder (n = 12), respectively. Blood KS levels (101–1525 ng/mL)…

Vascular modifications within a choroidal osteoma

1993

We report a case of choroidal osteoma followed-up for 7 years. During this lapse of time the choroidal osteoma showed slight enlargement, development of subretinal hemorrhage and modifications of intratumoral vascularization. Some large intratumoral vessels visible at first examination disappeared at follow-up, while other vessels not observed before developed. The changes in the vascularization of the choroidal osteoma denote profound dynamics in the processes of osseous rearrangement of the tumor.

Femtosecond laser versus mechanical keratome LASIK for myopia.

2005

To assess efficacy, safety, predictability, stability, and changes in corneal higher-order aberrations (CHOAs) and contrast sensitivity (CS) after a femtosecond laser for LASIK and standard LASIK for myopia.Prospective, randomized, comparative clinical study. Two hundred eyes of 100 consecutive patients who underwent LASIK treatment using the VISX S2 laser system. A femtosecond laser for flap creation was used in 100 eyes (50 patients; spherical equivalent [SE], -2.85+/-1.79 diopters [D]), and a mechanical microkeratome was used in 100 eyes (50 patients; SE, -2.90+/-1.63 D).Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), manifest refraction, CS by means of t…

Evaluation of the MGDRx eyebag treatment in young and older subjects with dry eye symptoms

2021

Summary Objectives This study aims to evaluate the relationship between application of the MGDRx thermal eyebag and dry eye signs and symptoms in young and older subjects and to compare the results between the two groups. Methods Thirty young, healthily volunteers between 18 and 31 years of age (23.95 ± 3.94 years) and thirty older subjects between 61 and 90 years of age (77.97 ± 8.11 years) participated in this study. Ocular surface parameters were assessed using the Oculus Keratograph 5 M, following the guidelines of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Dry Eye Workshop II Diagnostic Methodology report. Only subjects with a positive score on at least one questionnaire and an initial Non-Invas…

The effect of simulated normal and amblyopic higher-order aberrations on visual performance.

2012

Purpose To study the effect of simulated amblyopic and normal higher-order aberrations on visual performance of normal eyes. Methods To assess visual function, an adaptive optics visual simulator was used to compensate volunteers' ocular aberrations and simulate the wavefront aberration patterns found in healthy and amblyopic eyes in 7 healthy individuals. Visual acuity for high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity at 10, 20, and 25 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured after simulation of both pattern aberrations. The modulation transfer function and the point spread function were computed based on the aberration data. All measures were taken for 3 and 5.5 …

Variations in central corneal thickness during the menstrual cycle in women.

2007

PURPOSE: We report changes in the central corneal thickness during various phases of the menstrual cycle. METHODS: We recruited 16 healthy women of reproductive age and measured the central corneal thickness at 3 points in their menstrual cycle, beginning on days 1 to 3 and again at ovulation and at the end of the cycle (days 27-32). Ovulation was determined with a test that determines the peak of luteinizing hormone in the urine. RESULTS: We found that the central cornea was thinnest at the beginning of the cycle (mean = 536 microm). Corneal thickness increased at ovulation (mean = 549 microm) and at the end of the cycle (mean = 559 microm). The difference in corneal thickness was statisti…
