<title>Iodine and bromine resonance lamps in atmospheric research</title>

2003

For the first time previously developed iodine resonance spectra source has been tested in flash photolysis experiment. Quantitative measurements of concentration kinetics of iodine atomic species in a I2+O3 system are possible. The 183.038 nm resonance absorption transition of I(2P3/2) in previously developed EDL has been studied; dependence of self-absorption and self-reversal on iodine partial pressure in the discharge volume has been measured. The search for optimal conditions for an iodine EDL with minimized self-absorption and sufficient intensity were made. In condition of flash photolysis with previously described method it is possible to determine the emission temperature, oscillat…

Nucleon localization function in rotating nuclei

2020

Background: An electron localization function was originally introduced to visualize bond structures in molecules. It became a useful tool to describe electron configurations in atoms, molecules and solids. In nuclear physics, a nucleon localization function (NLF) has been used to characterize clusters in light nuclei, fragment formation in fission and pasta phases in the inner crust of neutron stars. Purpose: We use the NLF to study the nuclear response to fast rotation. Methods: We generalize the NLF to the case of nuclear rotation. The extended expressions involve both time-even and time-odd local densities. Since current density and density gradient contribute to the NLF primarily at th…

Driven Brownian particle as a paradigm for a nonequilibrium heat bath: Effective temperature and cyclic work extraction

2017

We apply the concept of a frequency-dependent effective temperature based on the fluctuation-dissipation ratio to a driven Brownian particle in a nonequilibrium steady state. Using this system as a thermostat for a weakly coupled harmonic oscillator, the oscillator thermalizes according to a canonical distribution at the respective effective temperature across the entire frequency spectrum. By turning the oscillator from a passive "thermometer" into a heat engine, we realize the cyclic extraction of work from a single thermal reservoir, which is feasible only due to its nonequilibrium nature.

Substituent effect of nitro group on aromaticity of carbazole rings

2014

The molecular geometries of carbazole and its 17 nitro derivatives were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. The harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity and nucleus-independent chemical shift descriptors of π-electron delocalization were calculated to estimate the aromaticity of the carbazole five- and six-membered rings. The biggest changes in the value of both descriptors were observed for the pyrrole ring. The nitro group attached to 3 and/or 6 positions of the carbazole ring system exerts only a slight influence on the benzene ring aromaticity.

9-Methyl-3-phenyldiazenyl-9H-carbazole: X-ray and DFT-calculated structures

2006

The title compound, C19H15N3, was prepared by condensation of 3-nitrosocarbazole and aniline with subsequent methylation. The structure is built up of stacks of almost planar molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict a completely planar conformation, different from that observed in the crystal lattice. HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) indices, calculated for three aromatic rings, demonstrate the small influence of the azo substituent on π electrons in the carbazole system.

Modeling of the Low-Frequency Noise in Thermal Lens Spectrometry

1998

The low-frequency noise observed in thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) can be modeled by assuming that the heated region, constituted by the thermal lens gradient and associated convective stream, behaves as a weakly damped harmonic oscillator with a natural frequency, vo, which is forced to move at an externally imposed pump frequency, vp. Out-of-phase lower-frequency oscillations of the TLS signal can be produced both by transient events, such as the beginning of the TLS experiment and small changes in the pump beam stability, and by drift of boundary conditions, such as the temperature of the surroundings. A model is developed and checked using 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-napthol (PAN) solutions in …

Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance of Chlorophyll Triplet States in Water-Soluble Chlorophyll Proteins from Lepidium virginicum: Evidence for Exci…

2018

Optically detected magnetic resonance of triplet states populated by photoexcitation in water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCPs) from Lepidium virginicum has been performed using both absorption and fluorescence detection. Well resolved triplet-singlet (T-S) spectra have been obtained and interpreted in terms of electronic interactions among the four chlorophylls (Chls), forming two dimers in the WSCP tetramer. Localization of the triplet state on a single Chl leads to a redistribution of the oscillator strength in the remaining three Chls of the complex. By comparing the spectra with those obtained on a substoichiometric WSCP complex containing only 2 Chls per protein tetramer, we proved…

Anaerobic ciliates from a sulphide-rich solution lake in Spain

1991

We have examined and quantified the anaerobic ciliates living in the hypolimnion of a 14 m deep sulphide-rich (up to 0.73 mM) solution lake in Spain. At least seven ciliate species were found, numbering up to 50 ml-1 in total and reaching maximum abundance close to the sediment. Caenomorpha medusula, Lacrymaria elegans, L. sapropelica and Lagynus sp. were the most abundant species. Their vertical distributions were not related to the sulphide profile. Most ciliates were dependent on the sedimentation of cryptomonads, photosynthetic bacteria (especially Chromatium and Oscillatoria) and other bacteria from their sites of production in closely-juxtaposed mid-water plates. All anaerobic ciliate…
