AbstractOsmoregulation plays an important role in cellular responses to osmotic stress in plants and in yeast. Aquaporins contribute to osmotic adjustment by facilitating transport of water or solutes across membranes. The tonoplastic water channel BobTIP1;1 (original name BobTIP26-1) genes are upregulated during dessication stress in cauliflower meristematic tissue. Effects of sublethal levels of tributyltin chloride on a new toxicity test organism,Liza saliens (osteichthyes, mugilidae): a histological study

The histopathological effects of 10−7 and 10−9M tributyltin(IV)chloride,TBTCl, solutions on different Liza saliens organs have been studied by light microscope. The fish were sacrificed after 3–4 h incubation in 10−7M TBTCl solution or after 15 days incubation in 10−9M solution. The observed histopathological changes were dose- and time-dependent. The 10−7M TBTCl concentration resulted in major damage to the gill epithelium, indicating that TBTCl primarily interfered with the respiration, osmoregulation, acid balance and nitrogenous waste excretion processes. Mannitol in Amanita muscaria – An osmotic blood–brain barrier disruptor enhancing its hallucinogenic action?

Hypothesis have been made that relatively high level of mannitol present in the tissues of fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) enables more efficient transportation of these active substances into the brain and thus enhance their total activity. It may have been supported by the fact that hallucinogenic effect after A. muscaria consumption is greater than after ingestion of an active substance quantity which the eaten fungi dose contain.

Salinity is one of the problems that has to be dealt with in turf-grass management, due both to restrictions in freshwater use for landscape irrigation and exposition to salt stress in coastal areas. International audience; The response of yeast cells to osmotic pressure variations of the medium were studied through the kinetics of cell-volume modifications corresponding to the mass transfer of water and solutes. Osmotic variations were made by modification of the concentration of an external binary solution (polyol/water) without nutritive components. Response to hyperosmotic stress in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae involves the participation of the general stress response mediated by Msn2/4 transcription factors and the HOG pathway. One of the transcription factors activated through this pathway is Hot1, which contributes to the control of the expression of several genes involved in glycerol synthesis and flux, or in other functions related to adaptation to adverse conditions. In this study the effects of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), are assessed on the Mediterranean mussel (. Mytilus galloprovincialis), exposed for 18 days at a concentration ranging from 0.1. mg/l to 1. mg/l. The effects are monitored using biomarkers related to stress response, such as regulatory volume decrease (RVD), and to oxidative stress, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), endogenous antioxidant systems and Hsp70 levels. The results demonstrate that cells from the digestive gland of M. galloprovincialis, exposed to SDS were not able to perform the RVD owing to osmotic stress. Original data for article: Acute and chronic response to a change in salinity of the euryhaline polychaete Pygospio elegans (Claparède)

These data were collected in an experimental study designed to evaluate the ability of the polychaete Pygospio elegans to cope with an acute as well as a long-term change in salinity. Specimens from Herslev, Denmark, originating from a salinity of about 15 were exposed to salinity 15 as control and 5 and 30 as low and high salinity treatments. After acute exposure, we measured body volume changes as well as gene expression of seven genes related to volume- and osmoregulation within 4 hours of exposure.
