Effect of?-cyclodextrin complexation on the photohaemolitic activity induced by Ketoprofen and Naproxen sensitization

1993

Red blood cell lysis photosensitized by two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Naproxen (NAP) and Ketoprofen (KPF) was investigated in the presence of β-cyclodextrin (β-Cyd). The photohaemolysis was inhibited by the addition of β-Cyd both for NAP and, to a lesser extent, for KPF. The protective action was found only in a restricted range of concentration of β-Cyd. Higher amounts of β-Cyd interfered with the resistance of the cell to the osmotic shock induced by the photosensitization process. The complexing action of β-Cyd was ascertained through UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, induced circular dichroism and emission spectroscopy. The isolated complexes Naproxen-β-Cyd (NAP-β-Cyd) and Ket…

Entropic Unmixing in Nematic Blends of Semiflexible Polymers.

2020

Binary mixtures of semiflexible polymers with the same chain length, but different persistence lengths, separate into two coexisting different nematic phases when the osmotic pressure of the lyotropic solution is varied. Molecular Dynamics simulations and Density Functional Theory predict phase diagrams either with a triple point, where the isotropic phase coexists with two nematic phases or a critical point of unmixing within the nematic mixture. The difference in locally preferred bond angles between the constituents drives this unmixing without any attractive interactions between monomers.

Osmotic pressure, atomic pressure and the virial equation of state of polymer solutions: Monte Carlo simulations of a bead-spring model

1994

A recently introduced coarse-grained model of polymer chains is studied analyzing various contributions to the pressure as obtained from the virial theorem as a function of chain length N, temperature T and density ϕ. The off-lattice model of the polymer chains has anharmonic springs between the beads, but of finite extensibility, and the Morse-type interaction between beads is repulsive at very short distances and attractive at intermediate distances. Solvent molecules are not explicitly included. It is found that the covalent forces along the chain (modelled by the spring potentials) contribute a negative term to the pressure, irrespective of temperature, which vanishes linearly in ϕ as ϕ…

Osmotic pressure of catenanes in solution

1989

We propose a nonuniversal scaling for the osmotic pressure in the case of concatenating ring polymers. The size exponent depends on the molecular weight of the catenans. The effect is more significant the shorter and the stiffer the molecules are.

The effect of osmo-induced stress on product formation by Zymomonas mobilis on sucrose

2000

The intensification of biosynthesis of fructooligosaccharides in the presence of high salt concentrations was observed during sucrose (10%) fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis 113S. A 0.6 M NaCl concentration led to an increase of oligosaccharide productivity by 3.5-fold. Sorbitol formation was increased in the presence of 0.16 M NaCl and was inhibited at highest salt concentrations. In a medium with high (65%, w/w) sucrose content the salts gave inhibitory effects on fructooligosaccharide production by lyophilised Z. mobilis cells. Influence of salts on gluconic acid and sorbitol formation under these conditions was studied. The ratio of oligosaccharides and gluconic acid productivity (Qolig…

Polystyrene, prepared by means of a diacylperoxide of the 3-benzeneazobenzoic acid, contain…

Interaction Between Osmotic and Hydrostatic Pressure in Yeast Inactivation

1999

The protective effect of an osmotic perturbation on high-pressure inactivation has been investigated using a yeast strain:Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Osmotic shocks have been carried out with binary medium (glycerol/sorbitol and water) with or without glucose. Variations of osmotic level, osmotic shift kinetics and time between osmotic and hydrostatic treatment (350 MPa/10 min) have allowed the characterization of cell baroprotection. Two different cumulative baroprotection effects have been distinguished: one conferred by the solute on biological structures and the other related to the osmotic stress, cell volume variations and stress metabolism response (HSP, trehalose). These experiments h…

Response of transgenic mannitol-producing tobacco plants to water deficit

2008

Transgenic mannitol-producing (+mtlD) and wild type (-mtlD) tobacco plants were exposed to water deficit to test whether mannitol is involved in drought stress protection. Rooted cuttings of -mtlD and +mtlD plants were fully irrigated (100% ET) or received 25% ET for 40 days, followed by 20 days of re-watering. Water deficit reduced RWC of both plant types starting on the 22nd day, total stem length of -mtlD 25% ET already after 11 days, whereas that of +mtlD 25% ET only after 34 days. After 30 days of deficit, a greater percentage of mature foliage was retained by +mtlD 25% ET compared to -mtlD 25% ET. Mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase activity of +mtlD plants was not affected by water de…

Glial Chloride Homeostasis Under Transient Ischemic Stress

2021

High water permeabilities permit rapid adjustments of glial volume upon changes in external and internal osmolarity, and pathologically altered intracellular chloride concentrations ([Cl–]int) and glial cell swelling are often assumed to represent early events in ischemia, infections, or traumatic brain injury. Experimental data for glial [Cl–]int are lacking for most brain regions, under normal as well as under pathological conditions. We measured [Cl–]int in hippocampal and neocortical astrocytes and in hippocampal radial glia-like (RGL) cells in acute murine brain slices using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy with the chloride-sensitive dye MQAE at room temperature. We observed s…
