Influence of intracellular convection on the oxygen release by human erythrocytes

There is general agreement today that intracellular diffusive transport of HbO2 and O2 limits the rate of oxygen uptake or release by the blood in the exchange vessels. Recent hemorheological results have shown that the mammalian erythrocyte exhibits fluidity as its most unique rheological property: it can be deformed continuously and rapidly, shear and normal stresses can be transmitted to the interior of the cell where systems of laminar flow are induced. These mechanical properties lead to the question whether or not intracellular convection does take place in the erythrocyte and to what extent it plays a part in gas exchange. Comparison of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) after isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) induced by isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance. Methods 18 healthy trained men (25.8±2.7 years; 78.4±8.2 kg; 175.7±6.1 cm; 25.4±1.8 BMI; 126.72±10.8 kg squat 1-RM) volunteered for this study. They randomly performed two different PAPE protocols: Isotonic squats (ISOTS), which consisted of 2 sets of 3 repetitions at 75% of one-maximum repetition (1-RM); and isometric squats (ISOMS), which consisted of 2 sets of 4 seconds of submaximal (75% of 1-RM) isometric contraction at 90°-knee flexion. Fos-like expression and nuclear size in osmotically stimulated supraoptic nucleus neurons

This study has analysed by immunocytochemistry the pattern of expression of Fos-related proteins, as well as variations in nuclear size, after the osmotically induced activation of supraoptic nucleus neurons of the rat. In control rats most supraoptic nucleus neurons were Fos-like negative. After acute and chronic dehydration by salt-loading, the number of Fos-like positive neurons increased dramatically. The level of Fos-like immunoreactivity was higher in chronically stimulated rats, and also the neurons of the ventral region of the supraoptic nucleus were more intensely stained than those of the dorsal region. Effect of Intraperitoneal Sterile Urine Injection on Abdominal Myoelectrical Activity in the Spinal Rat Model

The abdominal muscle reflex contractions in response to intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine and acid, alkaline, hypo- and hyperosmolar solutions are studied in an acute spinal rat model by conventional and integrated electromyographic techniques. Intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine causes a powerful and almost immediate abdominal muscle contracture of relative short duration. This response seems not to be related to urine pH or osmolarity, since only when solutions with extreme variations in these parameters are injected intraperitoneally are significant abdominal muscle contractions observed.

The first operating thermolytic reverse electrodialysis heat engine

Abstract Thermolytic reverse electrodialysis heat engine (t-RED HE) has been recently proposed as a technology for converting low-temperature waste heat into electricity. The construction and operation of the first world lab-scale prototype unit are reported. The system consists of: (i) a reverse electrodialysis unit where, the concentration gradient between two solutions of thermolytic salts is converted into electricity and (ii) a thermally-driven regeneration unit where low-temperature heat is used to restore the initial conditions of the two feed streams. Expression of Staphylococcus saprophyticus surface properties is modulated by composition of the atmosphere.

Expression of two major surface proteins of Staphylococcus saprophyticus, the haemagglutinin and the Staphylococcus saprophyticus surface-associated protein (Ssp), requires carefully defined culture conditions. The Ssp is produced when bacteria are grown on agar, whereas expression of the haemagglutinin requires growth in broth. We sought to identify the environmental signals that are responsible for this modulation. Varying the pH, the osmolarity of the growth medium or the temperature did not influence expression of the proteins. Cell motility probed by noise analysis of thickness shear mode resonators.

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique is an emerging bioanalytical tool to study the behavior of animal cells in vitro. Due to the high interfacial sensitivity of thickness shear mode (TSM) resonators it is possible to monitor the formation and breakage of cell-matrix interactions and changes in viscoelasticity of the cell bodies, as well as minute cell volume alterations by the time course of their resonance frequency even with millisecond time resolution.
