Cranial bone histology of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis (Amphibia, Temnospondyli) from the Late Triassic of Poland

In this study, 21 skull bones ofMetoposaurus krasiejowensisfrom the Late Triassic of Poland were investigated histologically. Dermal bones show a diploë structure, with an ornamented external surface. The ridges consist of mostly well vascularized parallel-fibered bone; the valleys are built of an avascular layer of lamellar bone. The thick middle region consists of cancellous bone, with varying porosity. The thin and less vascularized internal cortex consists of parallel-fibered bone. Pentadactyl manus of the Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland, the first record of pentadactyly among Temnospondyli

Abstract Temnospondyli are commonly believed to have possessed four digits in the manus and five in the pes. However, actual finds of articulated autopodia are extremely rare. Therefore, an articulated, slightly incomplete forelimb skeleton with preserved manus of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland is important in providing new details about the structure and ossification sequence in the temnospondyl limb. Costochondral graft with green-stick fracture used in reconstruction of the mandibular condyle : experience in 13 clinical cases

Since its publication in 1920 by Gillies, costochondral grafts have been used by surgeons to replace an injured mandibular condyle and to reconstruct the temporomandibular joint. This procedure is currently applied in cases of congenital dysplasia, developmental defects, temporomandibular ankylosis, neoplastic disease, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic dysfunction. Comparison of implant primary stability between maxillary edentulous ridges receiving intramembranous origin block grafts

Purpose: The purposes of the present study were: to compare the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values of implant placed in either ramus or calvaria block grafts; and to determine if implant diameter influences RFA implant stability quotient (ISQ) value. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective study that included 16 consecutives healthy patients treated with autogenous onlay block grafts for horizontal bone reconstruction in maxilla. Localization of Congenital Tegmen Tympani Defects

Objective: This study sets out to demonstrate the normal developmental steps of the tegmen tympani and thus explains the typical localization of congenital tegmental defects. Specimens: For this study, 79 macerated and formalin-fixed human temporal bones from 14th fetal week to adults were observed and prepared. Intervention: Macroscopic and microscopic examination of the prenatal and postnatal changes of the tegmen tympani during its development. The role of intrinsic pathway in apoptosis activation and progression in Peyronie's Disease.

Peyronie’s disease (PD) is characterized with formation of fibrous plaques which result in penile deformity, pain, and erectile dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the activation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway in plaques from PD patients. Tunica albuginea from either PD or control patients was assessed for the expression of bax, bcl-2 and caspases 9 and 3 using immunohistochemistry and by measurement of apoptotic cells using TUNEL assay. Bax overexpression was observed in metaplastic bone tissue, in fibroblasts, and in myofibroblast of plaques from PD patients. Metatropic dysplasia is a neonatally manifest entity that is characterized clinically by a rapidly progressing kyphoscoliosis leading to severe shortening of the originally long trunk ("metatropism"). Major radiographic features include flattening and defective ossification of the vertebral bodies, a narrow thorax and a marked hypoplasia of the basilar portions of the ilia with crescent-shaped iliac crests. There is some evidence of genetic heterogeneity. In this case series, a systematic histomorphometric analysis of two human bone biopsy specimens was conducted 1 and 5 years after grafting with a xenogeneic bovine bone substitute material (BSM). While the 1-year specimen still showed extensive signs of an active desmal ossification, the specimen after 5 years mainly showed mature lamellar bone without bone turnover or remodeling. A completed bony integration without extensive resorption of the BSM particles could be detected. Altogether, a good integration in the bone with osteoconduction and a high biocompatibility was seen.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral tibial condyle. Report of a new case and review of the literature.

Osteochondritis dissecans (OD) of the lateral tibial condyle is a rare condition. A review of the literature revealed only nine cases in seven patients. We report about a new case. It is widely accepted that this form of OD originates from an accessory center of ossification. Our case supports this theory. Although comparative roentgenograms of the left knee, taken because of complaints in the right one, were interpreted to be normal, retrospective analysis clearly revealed the lateral intercondylar eminence of the left knee to have been irregular many years before the onset of symptoms. Association with a classical OD in the contralateral knee is striking in most of the reported cases.
