Is telephone follow-up really effective in early diagnosis of inflammatory complications after tooth extraction?

2018

Background To establish whether telephone follow-up is really able to intercept post-extraction complications and to evaluate the degree of patient satisfaction with this kind of post-surgical monitoring. Material and Methods Six hundred and thirty-eight patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to a test or control group. Test group patients were monitored by telephone follow-up 24 and 72 hours after surgery to investigate the presence of local symptoms that are frequently associated with surgical wound infection and inflammation. Both test and control group patients were examined 7 days at suture removal. Patients with systemic diseases, those in which intra-operative accidents occurre…

Two novel mutations at exon 8 of the Sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) gene in an Italian series of patients affected by Paget's disease of bone (PDB).

2003

PDB is genetically heterogeneous. Mutations of the sequestosome1 gene have been reported in sporadic and familial forms of Paget's in patients of French Canadian and British descent. Mutational analyses in different ethnic groups are needed to accurately investigate hereditary diseases. We describe two novel mutations of sequestosome1 in 62 Italian sporadic patients, confirming the role of the encoded protein in this disorder. Introduction: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is a relatively common disease of bone metabolism reported to affect up to 3% of whites over 55 years of age. The disorder is genetically heterogeneous, and at present, there is scientific evidence that at least eight differ…

Complications in third molar removal: A retrospective study of 588 patients

2010

Objectives: Surgical removal of third molars is a regular surgical procedure, which like all operations, may have complications. The purpose of the study was to analyze the incidence of complications and their relationship with the surgical difficulty in a group of 588 patients treated by the same oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Study design: This retrospective cohort study consisted of 1699 third molars (M3) removed between 2005 and 2008. The teeth were grouped into a 6-class scale of surgical difficulty rated according to the surgical procedure description in the patient?s file: I: upper M3 requiring forceps only; II: upper M3 requiring osteotomy; III: upper M3 requiring osteotomy and too…

Comparison of the effect of low level laser therapy with alvogyl on the management of alveolar osteitis

2014

Background This study investigated the efficacy of low level laser therapy (LLLT) for managing alveolar osteitis (AO). Material and Methods Sixty patients with alveolar osteitis of mandibular third molars were randomly divided into three groups. In group 1, socket irrigation was followed by alvogyl placement, and the treatment was repeated 48 hours later. In group 2, socket was irradiated with a low power red laser for 3 consecutive days (200 mW, 30 seconds on each of the buccal and lingual surfaces and 30 seconds at the middle of the socket, 6 J per area). The subjects in group 3 underwent treatment with a low power infrared laser with the same parameters as group 2. A visual analogue scal…

The frequency and characteristics of idiopathic osteosclerosis and condensing osteitis lesions in a Turkish patient population.

2009

The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of idiopathic osteosclerosis (IO) and condensing osteitis (CO) in a Turkish patient population, considering factors such as age and sex of the population, in addition to shape and localization, as well as the dental relationship between IO and CO lesions.A retrospective study was performed using panoramic radiographs of 6,154 patients ranging in age from 5 to 69 years old, who had been subjected to dental treatment. Descriptive characteristics of radiopacities, including shape, localization and dental relationship were recorded. The Chi-squared test was used.A total of 238 radiopacities were detected, which included 185 IO lesions…

Inflammatory implant periapical lesion: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment--presentation of 7 cases.

2008

Purpose To investigate implant periapical lesions, and to describe their treatment. The hypothesis of this evaluation is that implant periapical lesions are disorders of the area surrounding the apex of a dental implant, and that their etiology can be multifactorial (ie, vascular impairment, vascular ischemia, overheating of bone during drilling, and implant surface contamination). The diagnosis is based on the clinical manifestations and x-ray findings. The x-ray findings usually involve a periapical radiotransparency. Materials and Methods Seven patients with implant periapical lesions (3 in the upper jaw, and 4 in the mandible) after implant placement are described. All patients reported…

Pyomyositis of the iliacus muscle complicated with septic sacroiliitis

2008

We report a rare case of pyomyositis of the iliacus muscle in a 29-year-old woman. After 2 weeks of adequate treatment, secondary septic sacroiliitis occurred, a complication that had not been described previously. Pyomyositis of the iliacus muscle must be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute pain in the hip region.

Tuberkulöse Destruktion des Iliosakralgelenkes

2001

Frontotemporal dementia: the post-tau era.

2006

As scientists have begun to decipher the molecular genetic bases of hereditary frontotemporal dementia (FTD), it has become clear that the biology of these human neurodegenerative diseases has a complexity not previously suspected. FTD has been found to be linked to several chromosomal loci including those in chromosome 9, chromosome 17, and chromosome 3. The article by Guyant-Marechal et al. in this issue of Neurology reports the clinical, pathologic, and molecular characteristics of a form of FTD associated with inclusion body myopathy and Paget disease of the bone observed in members of two families and expands our knowledge on genetically determined FTD.1 The disorder is associated with…
