Iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism after surgery for retrosternal goitre. A single centre retrospective analysis

AIM: The aim of this study is to assess, retrospectively, the incidence of secondary hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy in patients with retrosternal goitre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2009 to September 2015, 622 patients who undergone total thyroidectomy for goitre, were retrospectively observed. The patients were divided into two group: Group A, including 58 patients with retrosternal goitre and Group B, including 562 patients with in situ goitre. Those patients with diseases of the parathyroid glands, assumption of drugs modifying calcium metabolism and who received blood transfusions before or after surgery, were excluded from the study. The stream-dwelling larva of the Ruwenzori River Frog, Amietia ruwenzorica, its buccal cavity and pathology of chytridiomycosis

Tadpoles of Amietia ruwenzorica (Pyxicephalidae, Cacosterninae) were collected in the Ruwenzori Mountains, Uganda(identified by DNA barcoding). The ventrally directed enlarged oral disc with a high number of labial tooth rows (LTRF9(4)/9(1)) and the narrow tail with robust caudal musculature characterise them as stream-dwellers. We name this mor-photype the 'common or standard type of stream-adaptation', because special additional adhesive organs are missing in A.ruwenzorica. The uniserially arranged oral teeth of the spoon-shaped type with 16 to 18 cusps per tooth are known fromother anuran larvae, especially from pyxicephalids. Untersuchungen zur Aktivit�tskinetik des Isoenzymes CK-MB im Serum nach Myokardinfarkt

We investigated the activity kinetics of CK-total and CK-MB in 83 patients with proven myocardial infarctions. Serial serum samples were taken at intervals of 2--6 h. The activity of isoenzym CK-MB was determined by means of the immunological inhibition method. CK-MB activity was determined in all patients. The mean peak activity of CK-MB was 65 U/l (range: 9-241 U/l). At the time of peak CK-MB activity the mean percentage CK-MB activity was 13.2% (range: 3.4--21.7%). The CK-MB activity reached its peak at 17.4 h (range: 3.0--32.5 h) after the onset of retrosternal pain. This is 1.4 h after peak CK-total activity.
