Critiquing and Joining Intersections of Disaster, Conflict, and Peace Research

2020

AbstractDisaster research, conflict research, and peace research have rich and deep histories, yet they do not always fully intersect or learn from each other, even when they investigate if and how disasters lead to conflict or peace. Scholarship has tended to focus on investigating causal linkages between disaster (including those associated with climate change) and conflict, and disaster diplomacy emerged as a thread of explanatory research that investigates how and why disaster-related activities do and do not influence peace and conflict. However, definitive conclusions on the disaster-conflict-peace nexus have evaded scientific consensus, in part due to conceptual, methodological, and …

Factors Influencing Lower Secondary School Pupils’ Success in Programming Projects in Scratch

2020

In the Czech Republic, a radical change in the school curriculum is planned. Through a new, compulsory subject of “Informatics and ICT”, the aim is to develop digital literacy across all school subjects, and computational thinking. Computational thinking will be implemented in the curriculum of pre-primary, primary, lower and upper secondary schools, and in teacher education at all faculties of education in the Czech Republic. To ensure readiness for the implementation of the new subject, it has been necessary to prepare and develop a set of learning materials for pupils and teaching guidelines for teachers. These textbooks focus on robotics, programming (Scratch, Python), and theoretical c…

Islands of vulnerability and resilience: Manufactured stereotypes?

2018

This paper interrogates the aspects of islandness labelled ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ through analysing the concepts’ definitions from a development perspective. The investigation is conducted through the lens of four assumed islandness aspects: boundedness, smallness, isolation, and littorality. Discussion examines how and why core concepts of vulnerability and resilience have emerged from island studies, demonstrating how these two aspects of islandness are socially and culturally constructed, can influence development approaches taken, and are enhanced by island geographies. Drawing on insights from island geographies around the world, while comparing island and non-island perspect…

From Solid Spaces To Liquid Spaces: New Ecologies of Musical Practices.

2019

Purpose: In recent years, the interest in creating new educational spaces has increased substantially, aiming to influence the methods of learning of our students and to adopt new educational strategies. This article highlights the importance of the atmosphere when remodeling musical practices. Methodologically, when transforming a space, we do not only have to improve the physical architectures but also the pedagogical ones, as well as keeping the practices consistent with these changes. The MUSICLAB CR-209 'Sound laboratory' have been built in Valencia (Spain). This is a hybrid space designed especially for collaborative projects -teachers, artists, students and researchers- in which soun…

Replication and extension of framing effects to compliance with health behaviors during pandemics

2021

Outbreaks of infectious diseases represent a significant challenge for health authorities around the world Public cooperation and compliance with health recommendations constitute critical steps to stop the spread of such diseases But how should these recommendations be framed to achieve the most desirable outcomes? Across two experiments, we show that the classic Asian Disease Problem (Tversy and Kahneman, 1981) is replicable, regardless of disease type (real vs hypothetical) Thus, people are less (vs more) willing to take risks when information is positively (negatively) framed, irrespective of disease type, although they are generally more risk-averse in real pandemics Furthermore, peopl…

Explaining self-reported traffic crashes of cyclists: An empirical study based on age and road risky behaviors

2019

Abstract The growing rates of traffic crashes involving cyclists are currently recognized as a major public health and road safety concern. Furthermore, risky behaviors on the road and their precedent factors have been conceptualized as potential determinants for explaining, intervening and preventing traffic injuries of cyclists. Objectives This study aimed at examining whether individual factors and self-reported risky behaviors could explain the crash rates of cyclists in a period of 5 years. Methods A sample of 1064 cyclists was used, with a mean age of 32.83 years. Participants answered a survey assessing demographic data and information on risky behaviors, risk perception, knowledge o…

A survey on the thermal conditions experienced by a surgical team

2007

The complex environment of the operating theatre is shared by a group of people having highly different needs: on one side, there is a surgical team whose work may last many hours and, on the other, an anaesthetized patient often subject to liquid infusion. Up to now, little consideration has been given to the different needs of the surgical team who may be affected according to their positions with respect to the scialytic lamp and their particular task. Clothing influences the comfort of the surgical team to a considerable degree: in fact, in some surgery (orthopaedics, neurosurgery and so on), surgeons and assistants must wear paper overalls beneath non-breathable plastic overalls and p…

Tree Species Identification Using 3D Spectral Data and 3D Convolutional Neural Network

2018

In this study we apply 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for tree species identification. Study includes the three most common Finnish tree species. Study uses a relatively large high-resolution spectral data set, which contains also a digital surface model for the trees. Data has been gathered using an unmanned aerial vehicle, a framing hyperspectral imager and a regular RGB camera. Achieved classification results are promising by with overall accuracy of 96.2 % for the classification of the validation data set. nonPeerReviewed

Sorption of V and VI group metalloids (As, Sb, Te) on modified peat sorbents

2016

AbstractThe present work investigates arsenic, antimony and tellurium sorption using iron modified peat. The results were obtained using batch tests and the sorption was studied as a function of initial metalloid concentration, pH and sorption time, as well as the presence of competing substances. The obtained results indicate that modification of peat with Fe compounds significantly enhances the sorption capacity of the sorbents used for sorption of arsenic, antimony and tellurium. The optimal pH interval for the sorption of Sb(III) is 6.5–9 and for As(V) and Sb(V) – 3–6, while As(III) and tellurium sorption using Fe-modified peat is favourable in a wider interval of 3–9. The presence of c…
