A pragmatic study of nonsense, from Lewis Carroll to the Monty Python

2010

This dissertation consists in a study of verbal exchanges in nonsense literature, from the last quarter of the nineteenth century and one of the two fathers of the genre, Lewis Carroll, to the last quarter of the twentieth century and his glorious heirs, the Monty Python. The corpus is taken from the whole of English-speaking nonsense literature, be it English (Lewis Carroll, the Monty Python, N.F. Simpson), Canadian (Stephen Leacock), or American (Robert Benchley, Donald Ogden Stewart, Joseph Heller and the Marx Brothers). As the title indicates, the study of verbal exchanges will rely on pragmatic analysis, pragmatics being the study of how language works as a practice, in social context.…

An agent-based system for maritime search and rescue operations

2010

Maritime search and rescue operations are critical missions involving personnel, boats, helicopter, aircrafts in a struggle against time often worsened by adversary sea and weather conditions. In such a context, telecommunication and in- formation systems may play a crucial role sometimes concurring to successfully accomplish the mission. In this paper we present an application able to localize the vessel who has launched a rescue request and to plan the most effective path for rescue assets. The application has been realised as a distributed and open multi-agent system deployed on rescue vehicles as well as on a land maritime stations of the Italian Coast Guard. The system is going to be t…

Right-turn Bypass Lanes at Roundabouts: Geometric Schemes and Functional Analysis

2012

Right-turn bypass lanes can be implemented in conventional and innovative roundabout intersections to increase the capacity and improve the global functional performances. The Right-turn bypass lanes (also called slip lanes) can be distinguished according to the planimetric layout and the entry control type (stop, yield slip or Free Flow acceleration lane). This paper presents a closed-form model for the estimation of capacity, delays and level of service of roundabout equipped with Right-turn bypass lanes, considering the effect of geometric slip lane schemes, control type, vehicular and pedestrian flow. In order to examine the traffic conditions which can benefit from slip lane roundabout…

One-piece micropumps from liquid crystalline core-shell particles

2012

Responsive polymers are low-cost, light weight and flexible, and thus an attractive class of materials for the integration into micromechanical and lab-on-chip systems. Triggered by external stimuli, liquid crystalline elastomers are able to perform mechanical motion and can be utilized as microactuators. Here we present the fabrication of one-piece micropumps from liquid crystalline core-shell elastomer particles via a microfluidic double-emulsion process, the continuous nature of which enables a low-cost and rapid production. The liquid crystalline elastomer shell contains a liquid core, which is reversibly pumped into and out of the particle by actuation of the liquid crystalline shell i…

Prenatal Ultrasound Screening: False Positive Soft Markers May Alter Maternal Representations and Mother-Infant Interaction

2012

Background In up to 5% of pregnancies, ultrasound screening detects a “soft marker” (SM) that places the foetus at risk for a severe abnormality. In most cases, prenatal diagnostic work-up rules out a severe defect. We aimed to study the effects of false positive SM on maternal emotional status, maternal representations of the infant, and mother-infant interaction. Methodology and Principal Findings Utilizing an extreme-case prospective case control design, we selected from a group of 244 women undergoing ultrasound, 19 pregnant women whose foetus had a positive SM screening and a reassuring diagnostic work up, and 19 controls without SM matched for age and education. In the third trimester…

Health literacy of pregnant women and duration of breastfeeding maintenance: a feasibility study

2020

Research the association between health literacy (HL) and exclusive breastfeeding at 4-months postpartum.Despite the benefits of breastfeeding (BF), its rates are low worldwide. Among the reasons for abandonment is the level of maternal education. Maternal education has been associated with HL, but evidence between HL and BF maintenance is limited.A cross-sectional study. The sample compromised 229 nursing mothers recruited from January 2018 to the end of December 2018 at Spain by systematic sampling method. Women were interviewed postpartum on parameters associated with the start and continuation of BF up to 4 months postpartum. Multivariate logistic regression models to explain exposure va…

Efficient Steering Mechanism for Mobile Network-Enabled UAVs

2022

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is becoming the de-facto video delivery technology over best-effort networks nowadays, thanks to the myriad advantages it brings. However, many studies have shown that HAS suffers from many Quality of Experience (QoE)-related issues in the presence of competing players. This is mainly caused by the selfishness of the players resulting from the decentralized intelligence given to the player. Another limitation is the bottleneck link that could happen at any time during the streaming session and anywhere in the network. These issues may result in wobbling bandwidth perception by the players and could lead to missing the deadline for chunk downloads, which result …

Adherence to the New Nordic Diet during pregnancy and subsequent maternal weight development: a study conducted in the Norwegian Mother and Child Coh…

2018

AbstractThe rising prevalence of overweight and obesity is a worldwide public health challenge. Pregnancy and beyond is a potentially important window for future weight gain in women. We investigated associations between maternal adherence to the New Nordic diet (NND) during pregnancy and maternal BMI trajectories from delivery to 8 years post delivery. Data are from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort. Pregnant women from all of Norway were recruited between 1999 and 2008, and 55 056 are included in the present analysis. A previously constructed diet score, NND, was used to assess adherence to the diet. The score favours intake of Nordic fruits, root vegetables, cabbages, potatoes, oatme…
