POSTER: Optimizing scientific file I/O patterns using advice based knowledge

2014

Before us, other works have used data prefetching to boost applications performance [1]–[8]. Our approach differs from these works since we do not rely on precise I/O pattern information to predict and prefetch every chunck of data in advance. Instead we use data prefetching to group many small requests in a few big ones, improving applications performance and utilization of the whole storage system. Moreover, we provide the infrastructure that enables users to access file system specific interfaces for guided I/O without modifying applications and hiding the intrinsic complexity that such interfaces introduce.

Stability Analysis and Stabilization of T-S Fuzzy Delta Operator Systems with Time-Varying Delay via an Input-Output Approach

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/913234 Open Access The stability analysis and stabilization of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy delta operator systems with time-varying delay are investigated via an input-output approach. A model transformation method is employed to approximate the time-varying delay. The original system is transformed into a feedback interconnection form which has a forward subsystem with constant delays and a feedback one with uncertainties. By applying the scaled small gain (SSG) theorem to deal with this new system, and based on a Lyapunov Krasovskii funct…

Robust stability and stabilization of uncertain T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delay: An input-output approach

2013

An input-output approach to the stability and stabilization of uncertain Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with time-varying delay is proposed in this paper. The time-varying parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded, and the delay is intervally time varying. A novel method is employed to approximate the time-varying delay, based on which the considered system is transformed into a feedback interconnection form. The new formulation of the system is comprised of a forward subsystem with constant time delay and a feedback subsystem embedding the uncertainties. By applying the scaled small-gain theorem to the converted system, less conservative stability and stabilization criteria…

Understanding the shortcomings of commodity-based technology in input-output models: an economic-circuit approach

2004

International audience; The Make-Use Model serves as a basis for most national accounting systems as the System of National Accounts (SNA) and is acknowledged as the most suitable model for interregional analysis. Two hypotheses are traditionally made featuring either industry-based technologies (IBT) or commodity-based technologies (CBT). While industry-based technologies can be easily interpreted in terms of a demand-driven economic circuit, it will be shown that: (1) commodity-based technologies cannot be interpreted as a demand-driven economic circuit because this involves computing the inverse of a matrix (the matrix of industry output proportions), which is either impossible or genera…

A robust forward-displacement analysis of spherical parallel robots

2009

The forward-displacement analysis of spherical parallel robots (SPRs) is revisited. A robust approach, based on the input–output (I/O) equation of spherical four-bar linkages, is proposed. In this approach, the closed-loop kinematic chain of a SPR is partitioned into two four-bar spherical chains, whose I/O equations are at the core of the analysis reported here. These equations lead to a trigonometric equation in the joint angles, which is solved semigraphically to obtain the joint variables for the determination of the moving plate orientation. Examples are included to demonstrate the application of the method.

On the Impossibility of Calculating the Product Technology in the Supply-Use Model

2009

The Supply-Use input-output model of the SNA and Eurostat is examined. For the product-by-product IO tables, two hypothesis are possible: "product technology", largely adopted (Eurostat A) and examined here, and "industry technology" (Eurostat B). One examines the calculability of the model. Negatives are an issue; (i) they are systematical in the inverse supply matrix: negative probabilities are impossible, Markov chains become impossible; (ii) negative flows are nonsense in symmetric matrix of coefficients or in inverse matrices. Matrices must be square what removes much of their interest. Same conclusions can be transposed to industry-by-industry IO tables under fixed-industry-sales-stru…

Towards efficient inductive synthesis of expressions from input/output examples

1993

Our goal through several years has been the development of efficient search algorithm for inductive inference of expressions using only input/output examples. The idea is to avoid exhaustive search by means of taking full advantage of semantic equality of many considered expressions. This might be the way that people avoid too big search when finding proof strategies for theorems, etc. As a formal model for the development of the method we use arithmetic expressions over the domain of natural numbers. A new approach for using weights associated with the functional symbols for restricting search space is considered. This allows adding constraints like the frequency of particular symbols in t…

New Developments in the Use of Location Quotients to Estimate Regional Input–Output Coefficients and Multipliers

2004

Tohmo T. (2004) New developments in the use of location quotients to estimate regional input–output coefficients and multipliers, Reg. Studies 38, 43–54. This study compares the survey-based regional input–output coefficients and production multipliers published by Statistics Finland, 2000, with estimates obtained by applying location quotients (LQs) to national data. The consequences of using alternative adjustment formulae, the ‘SLQ, CILQ and FLQ’ are illustrated by an input–output model constructed for the Keski-Pohjanmaa (K-P) region. The results indicate that the SLQ and CILQ both produce highly misleading regional input–output coefficients and multipliers. These adjustment formulae ar…

Input-Output Finite-Time Stability of Discrete-Time Impulsive Switched Linear Systems with State Delays

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00034-013-9610-7 This paper is concerned with the problem of input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) for discrete impulsive switched systems with state delays. Sufficient conditions are presented for the existence of IO-FTS for such systems under the cases of certain switching, arbitrary switching, and uncertain switching. All the obtained results are formulated in a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Regional Input–Output Tables and the FLQ Formula: A Case Study of Finland

2013

Flegg A. T. and Tohmo T. Regional input – output tables and the FLQ formula: a case study of Finland, Regional Studies. This paper examines the use of location quotients (LQs) in constructing regional input – output tables. Its focus is on the modified FLQ formula proposed by Flegg and Webber in 1997. Using data for twenty Finnish regions of widely different size, a regression model is developed to assist in the selection of a value for the unknown parameter δ in this formula. It is found that the FLQ yields results far superior to those from standard LQ-based formulae. The FLQ-based initial set of regional input coefficients could be used to build the non-survey foundations of a hybrid mod…
