Strategies to change body composition in older adults: do type of exercise and dose distribution matter?
2020
Background: This study aims to analyze changes in sedentary elderlies' body composition, comparing the impact of two dose distributions: continuous (60 min/session) vs. accumulated (30 min/session in the morning and 30 min/session in the afternoon), on two types of physical exercise programs (multicomponent-training [MCT] vs. walking interval-training [WIT]). Methods: Forty-six sedentary overweight elderly (71.3±4.3 years) were evaluated by bioimpedance with a pre-post 2x2 factorial design. Participants were distributed in four homogeneous groups, considering gait and health parameters. Results: The overall sample showed significant improvements in fat mass (% and kg) and fat-free mass (kg)…
Aerobic fitness, energy balance, and body mass index are associated with training load assessed by activity energy expenditure
2009
The present study examined whether activity energy expenditure related to body mass (AEE/kg) is associated with maximal aerobic fitness (VO(2max)), energy balance, and body mass index (BMI) during the 2 hardest weeks of the military basic training season (BT). An additional purpose was to study the accuracy of the pre-filled food diary energy intake. Energy expenditure (EE) with doubly labeled water, energy intake (EI), energy balance, and mis-recording was measured from 24 male conscripts with varying VO(2max). AEE/kg was calculated as (EE x 0.9-measured basal metabolic rate)/body mass. The reported EI was lower (P<0.001) than EE (15.48 MJ/day) and mis-recording of the pre-filled diary …
Associations of cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and BMI with arterial health in middle‐aged men and women
2020
Abstract We investigated the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical activity (PA) with regard to aerobic and resistance training, and body mass index (BMI) with pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) in middle‐aged adults with at least one cardiovascular risk factor. A total of 84 (46 men and 38 women) participated in the study. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using a maximal graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer and was defined as maximal power output (Wmax) normalized for body weight‐0.35. Participation in aerobic and resistance training was assessed by a detailed questionnaire and BMI was calculated as weight (kg)/[height (m2)]. Pulse wave ve…
Plasma Metabolomic Profiles of Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, and Carbohydrate Quality Index in the PREDIMED Study
2020
Background The quality of carbohydrate consumed, assessed by the glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), or carbohydrate quality index (CQI), affects the postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses, which have been implicated in the etiology of several chronic diseases. However, it is unclear whether plasma metabolites involved in different biological pathways could provide functional insights into the role of carbohydrate quality indices in health. Objectives We aimed to identify plasma metabolomic profiles associated with dietary GI, GL, and CQI. Methods The present study is a cross-sectional analysis of 1833 participants with overweight/obesity (mean age = 67 y) from 2 case-cohort s…

Metabolic comorbidities and male sex influence steatosis in chronic hepatitis C after viral eradication by direct-acting antiviral therapy (DAAs): Ev…
2021
Background: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is associated with hepatic steatosis, related to both a direct viral action and metabolic features. Vice-versa data on hepatic steatosis after viral eradication by direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) are undefined although the presence of metabolic alterations could strongly influence the occurrence of steatosis as in NAFLD. The controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) (FibroscanⓇ) allows the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of fatty liver. Aim: to evaluate in patients with CHC whether hepatic steatosis diagnosed by CAP modifies after DAAs-induced sustained virologic response (SVR). Methods: Data were collected the day of DAAs therapy starting and…
Treatment Response in Patients with Stones, and Low Urinary pH and Hypocitraturia Stratified by Body Mass Index.
2015
Obesity has been shown to be a risk factor for kidney stone formation. Obesity leads to insulin resistance which subsequently leads to low urinary pH. Low urinary pH is typically treated with potassium citrate. We determined if the response to potassium citrate for the treatment of low urinary pH and hypocitraturia varied when patients were stratified by body mass index. We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with urolithiasis and concomitant hypocitraturia and low urinary pH as unique abnormalities upon metabolic evaluation treated exclusively with potassium citrate. Based on body mass index the cohort was divided into the 4 groups of normal weight, overweight, obese and morbid…
Effect of Obesity and Being Overweight on Disability and Pain After Lumbar Fusion: An Analysis of 805 Patients.
2016
STUDY DESIGN Prospective follow-up study. OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of obesity and being overweight on disability and pain of patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Although spinal fusion surgery has been shown to relieve symptoms in several spinal disorders, the influence of obesity on the results remains controversial. METHODS Since January 1, 2008, all patients undergoing lumbar fusion in two hospitals have been invited to participate in a prospective follow-up database. At the end of 2014, the preoperative and 1-year follow-up data of 805 patients were available. Disability was evaluated using the Oswestry Disability Index and back and leg pain…
Cross-sectional associations of objectively-measured sleep characteristics with obesity and type 2 diabetes in the PREDIMED-Plus trial.
2018
Study Objectives: To examine independent and combined associations of sleep duration and sleep variability with body composition, obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elders at high cardiovascular risk. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 1986 community-dwelling elders with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from PREDIMEDPlus trial. Associations of accelerometry-derived sleep duration and sleep variability with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body composition were assessed fitting multivariable-adjusted linear regression models. Prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for obesity and T2D were obtained using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression w…
Added impact of obesity and insulin resistance in nocturnal blood pressure elevation in children and adolescents.
2008
The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between insulin resistance and the ambulatory blood pressure components in obese children and adolescents. Eighty-seven overweight and obese white children and adolescents of both sexes, of European origin from 6 to 18 years of age (mean age: 10.9±2.7 years), were selected. Obesity was defined on the basis of a threshold body mass index z score >2 (Cole’s least mean square method) and overweight with a body mass index from the 85th to 97th percentile. A validated oscillometric method was used to measure ambulatory BP (Spacelabs 90207) during 24 hours. Fasting glucose and insulin were measured, and the homeostasis model assessm…
