Abstract In the present study we tested the relaxant effect of three aporphine alkaloids—roemerine, anonaine and dehydroroemerine—isolated from the roots of Annona cherimolia, on isolated strips of rat thoracic aorta. All compounds completely relaxed KCl- and noradrenaline-induced contractions with different potencies depending on their structural characteristics. The experiments, carried out in Ca2+-free medium using two different agonists (noradrenaline and caffeine) which mobilize calcium intracellularly by different mechanisms of action, showed that the alkaloids made no contribution to intracellular calcium processes. Abstract Supplementation of rat diet with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole, or ethoxyquin resulted in increased liver epoxide hydratase activity. The increase was obvious at 0.1% and amounted to 200–400% at 0.5%. Increased activity was accompanied by increased proportion of the epoxide hydratase band in SDS polyacrylamide gels, indicating induction of the enzyme. Two amides, heitziamide A and heitziamide B and two phenylethanoids, heitziethanoid A and heitziethanoid B together with thirteen known compounds were isolated from F. heitzii (Letouzey). The structures of all compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis. Nine compounds were evaluated for oxidative burst inhibitory activity in a chemoluminescence assay and for cytotoxicity against PC-3 prostate cancer cells. All compounds exhibited a clear suppressive effect on phagocytosis response upon activation with serum opsonized zymosan at the range of IC50 = 2.0-6.5 mu M, but no cytotoxic effect was observed (IC50 > 100 mu M). The aim of this study was to investigate in vivo and in vitro antioxidant properties of furosemide. In vitro, human red blood cells were submitted to oxidative stress (AAPH), in absence or in presence of different concentrations of furosemide. Potassium efflux was measured in order to quantify the oxidative stress after the action of AAPH on red blood cells. Feeding of rats with 1% ethoxyquin (EQ) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) but not butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) increases the formation rate of benzo[a]pyrene (BP)-4,5-dihydrodiol from BP in hepatic microsomes. The production of other BP-dihydrodiols and of BP phenols is decreased after treatment with EQ, BHT and BHA. EQ and BHT are more effective than BHA in inducing epoxide hydrolase (EH) activity towards styrene oxide as the substrate.

Background: The emission of lead (Pb) occurring during the extraction, processing and industrial applications of this element remains a significant environmental risk factor. The absorbability of lead in humans is strongly associated with the general health status of exposed individuals.
