Mediterranean Diet and Physical Activity Decrease the Initiation of Cardiovascular Drug Use in High Cardiovascular Risk Individuals: A Cohort Study

Our aim was to assess whether long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were associated with a lower initiation of cardiovascular drug use. Structural and dynamical characterization of melt PEO–salt mixtures

Abstract Salt doped poly ethylene oxide (PEO) mixtures were investigated by means of both small angle neutron scattering and QENS techniques aiming to characterize morphological and dynamical features in the melt state. These experimental evidences provide support to the proposed heterogeneous scenario for polymer electrolytes. In particular, the existence of PEO–cation complexes is proposed to play a major role in intramolecular cooperation and intermolecular transient crosslinks, which affects the mixture properties.

Morphology of solid polymer electrolytes: a TR WAXS investigation

A wide angle X-ray scattering investigation of (polyethylene oxide)n–sodium thiocyanate [(PEO)nNaSCN] mixtures is reported. Temperature dependence analysis for different mixtures is shown, in order to rationalize the multi-phase behaviour. Depending on the amount of salt added and upon the temperature considered three different phases have been found to simultaneously coexist: crystalline PEO, amorphous PEO, and crystalline complex.

Bioclimatic atlas of the terrestrial Arctic

AbstractThe Arctic is the region on Earth that is warming at the fastest rate. In addition to rising means of temperature-related variables, Arctic ecosystems are affected by increasingly frequent extreme weather events causing disturbance to Arctic ecosystems. Here, we introduce a new dataset of bioclimatic indices relevant for investigating the changes of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. The dataset, called ARCLIM, consists of several climate and event-type indices for the northern high-latitude land areas > 45°N. 5'-d(CCTATAGATATCC) was reacted with each syn-enantiomer of trans-7,8-dihydroxy 9,10-epoxy 7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (syn-BPDE). The (-)-enantiomer yielded one dominating adduct, whereas the (+)-enantiomer resulted in two major adducts. As indicated by optical spectroscopic methods, the major adduct derived from both (-)- and (+)-syn-BPDE involves cis addition of the C-10 position of the diol epoxide to the exocyclic amino group of deoxyguanosine [(-)-syn-BPDEc-N2-dG and (+)-syn-BPDEc-N2-dG, respectively], whereas the minor (+)-syn-BPDE adduct is identical to a trans adduct [(+)-syn-BPDEt-N2-dG]. CO-releasing binuclear rhodium complexes as inhibitors of nitric oxide generation in stimulated macrophages.

Nontoxic CO-releasing dirhodium complexes act as inhibitors of NO in stimulated macrophage cells, suggesting that novel antiinflammatory treatments could involve the use of these types of binuclear complexes.

Abstract Complexes [Pd(κ2-R)(μ-Cl)]2 [κ2-R=κ2-C,N′-C6H3(NNC6H4Me-4′)-2-Me-5 (1)] and [Pd(κ1-R)Cl(κ1-dppm)(κ2-dppm)]TfO [dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (2)] have been used to prepare new palladium derivatives containing dppm. Thus, complex 1 reacts with one equivalent of dppm to afford [{Pd(κ2-R)Cl}2(μ-dppm)] (3) and with AgClO4 and dppm (1:2:2 molar ratios) to give [Pd(κ2-R)(κ2-dppm)]ClO4 (4·ClO4). The triflate salt of this complex (4·TfO) reacts with PPh3 to yield [Pd(κ1-R)(PPh3)(κ2-dppm)]TfO (5). Characterization of the binding of benzodiazepines to human serum albumin

The binding of eleven benzodiazepine derivatives to human serum albumin (HSA) was determined by means of sephadex gel filtration. The albumin binding of the substances was characterized by the percentage of bound drug, the binding constants k +, K 1 and m, the number of binding sites per albumin molecule, and the free binding energy. Under the conditions chosen in these experiments there seems to exist only one binding site of the same type for all investigated benzodiazepines at the HSA molecule. The affinities of the benzodiazepines to this binding site are very different. It is discussed which part of the benzodiazepine molecule represents the main binding group.

AbstractEpidemiological studies suggest that individuals differing in the expression of allelic variants of the human glutathione transferase (GST) Pi gene differ in susceptibility to chemical carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). This study reports the catalytic efficiencies (kcat/Km) of two naturally occurring variants, GSTP1-1/I-105 and GSTP1-1/V-105, towards a series of fjord-region diol epoxides representing potent biologically active PAH metabolites, and two GSTP1-1 mutants with Ala105 and Trp105 in the active site. Epoxy-Acetogenins and other Polyketide Epoxy Derivatives as Inhibitors of the Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain Complex I

Annonaceous acetogenins (ACG), an extensive group of cytotoxic natural products, are antitumor agents whose main mode of action is inhibition of the mammalian mitochondrial complex I. Herein we describe the importance of the different chemical groups along the alkyl chain for optimal inhibitory potency, discussing the structurally relevant factors present in these compounds. For this purpose, a series of epoxide derivatives from alpha-linolenic acid were prepared and their activity compared with that of epoxy-acetogenins and tetrahydrofuranic (THF) acetogenins isolated from Rollinia membranacea.
