Oleuropein protects against dextran sodium sulfate-induced chronic colitis in mice.

The anti-inflammatory effect of oleuropein (1), the major phenolic secoiridoid in Olea europaea, was evaluated in an experimental model of chronic colitis in mice. Animals were exposed to four repeated cycles of dextran sodium sulfate in drinking water followed by a 7-day rest period. Animals receiving a standard diet supplemented with 0.25% of 1 (equivalent to 500 mg/kg/day) for 56 days exhibited a decrease of inflammatory symptoms, as reflected by improvement of disease activity index and histopathological changes. It was found that 1 decreased inflammatory cell recruitment and the release of inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 with increased IL-10 levels in colon tissue. …

Species of the genus Cryptosporidium are protozoan parasites (Apicomplexa) that cause gastroenteritis in animals and humans. Of these Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis are the major causative agents of human cryptosporidiosis. Whereas infection is self-limiting in the immunocompetent hosts, immunocompromised individuals develop a chronic, life-threatening disease. Toxicological assessment of mesoporous silica particles in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

[EN] Here we report the toxicological evaluation of mesoporous silica particles (MSPs) in the nematode C. elegans. Specifically, we have investigated the effect of bare micro- (M0) and nano-sized (N0) MSPs, and their corresponding functionalized particles with a starch derivative (Glu-N) (M1 and N1, respectively) on C. elegans ageing parameters. The toxicity of MSPs, their impact on C. elegans lifespan, movement capacity, progeny and ability to survive upon exposure to acute oxidative stress were assessed. Azobenzene Polyesters Used as Gate-Like Scaffolds in Nanoscopic Hybrid Systems

The synthesis and characterisation of new capped silica mesoporous nanoparticles for on-command delivery applications is reported. Functional capped hybrid systems consist of MCM-41 nanoparticles functionalised on the external surface with polyesters bearing azobenzene derivatives and rhodamine¿B inside the mesopores. Two solid materials, Rh-PAzo8-S and Rh-PAzo6-S, containing two closely related polymers, PAzo8 and PAzo6, in the pore outlets have been prepared. Characterization of V-doped SnO2 nanoparticles at ambient and high pressures

Nanoparticles of V-doped SnO2 with stoichiometry Sn1-xO2Vx (x = 0.05, 0.075, 0.125) have been synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Their structural, vibrational, and nuclear properties have been characterized by x-ray Diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and Mössbauer Spectroscopy (with 119Sn probe) at ambient pressure. We also performed high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments. The structural behaviour was studied up to ∼10 GPa under quasi-hydrostatic conditions. Pickling is one of the most important steps in steel manufacturing industry. During the process, an acid reacts with the surface oxides causing metal ions accumulation in the pickling solution. Initial Preparation and Characterization of Single Step Fabricated Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFC)

In this study, facile tape casting process has been successfully carried out to fabricate an unit anode supported intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) with four different layers: a composite cathode which is a mix of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF48) and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.9 (GDC10), GDC10 as thin electrolyte layer, NiO-GDC10 without pore former as thin anode functional layer (AFL), and anode support layer of NiO-GDC10 with carbon pore former. The multi-layer was sintered once to produce an unit planar cell. An OCV of 1.002 V at 500 °C, and maximum power density of 466 mW cm–2 at 648 °C are obtained. The Innervation of Taste Buds in the Soft Palate and Circumvallate Papilla of the Rat as Revealed by the Zinc Iodide-Osmium Tetroxide Technique.

The taste buds in the soft palate and the circumvallate papillae of the rat were investigated by the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide technique. In addition, electron micrographs of taste buds stained with this method were presented for the first time. Differences in taste bud structures were found between the examined regions. The taste buds of the soft palate showed a complicated plexus of intragemmal nerve fibers. Some fibers exhibited terminal polymorphic swellings. Single branches could be traced close to the space of the taste pore.
