Epoxidation of Olefins with a Silica-Supported Peracid

2012

Anhydrous [2-percarboxyethyl] functionalized silica (2a) is an advantageous oxidant for performing the epoxidation of olefins 1. Epoxides 3 do not undergo the ring-opening reactions catalyzed by the acidic silica surface, except for particularly activated cases such as styrene oxide. The hydrophilic and acidic character of the silica surface does not interfere with the directing effects exerted by allylic H-bond acceptor substituents. The alkenes 1 carrying hydroxyl groups react with silica-supported peracid 2a faster than unsubstituted alkenes, thus reversing the trend known for reactions with soluble peracids. These results are attributed to the H-bond interactions of substrate 1 with the…

Anaerobic Palladium-Catalyzed Chemoselective Oxidation of Allylic and Benzylic Alcohols with α-Bromo Sulfoxide as a Co-Oxidant.

2007

A chemoselective palladium-catalyzed anaerobic oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols using an α-bromo sulfoxide as a co-oxidant is described for the first time. The catalyst system is simple and has a long life because of the allowance of phosphane ligands under the non-aerobic conditions. The advantages of the described method include no overoxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids because of the mild conditions applied, the tolerance of oxygen-sensitive functionalities such as a carbon-carbon double bond, an organothio group, or a diorganoamino group and the effective preparation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, resulting from the oxidation of primary and secondary …

Synthesis of Spirovetivane Sesquiterpenes from Santonin. Synthesis of (+)-Anhydro-?-rotunol and All Diastereomers of 6,11-Spirovetivadiene.

2005

The synthesis of the spirovetivane sesquiterpenes (+)-anhydro-beta-rotunol and all the diastereomers of 6,11-spirovetivadiene in enantiomerically pure form has been achieved starting from santonin. The key step is the silicon-guided acid-promoted rearrangement of a 1-trimethylsilyl-4,5-epoxyeudesmane prepared from santonin in several steps involving lactone reductive opening, conjugate addition of TMSLi-CuCN, deoxygenation of a carbonyl group, and epoxidation. Rearrangement of the epoxide gave a spiro[4,5]decanediol which was used as a synthetic intermediate. From this compound, (+)-anhydro-beta-rotunol was prepared after elimination of the primary hydroxyl group in the side chain, followed…

Evaluation and comparison of tailor-made stationary phases based on spherical silica-based beads for capillary electrochromatography via peptide sepa…

2004

Small cyclic peptides have been employed to elucidate the performance of novel sorbents as stationary phases in capillary electrochromatography (CEC). In this paper chain length dependencies for ordinary liquid chromatographic sorbents are reported together with findings acquired on beads specifically designed to suit CEC. The latter, tailor-made, spherical, porous silica exhibits a distinguished surface modification to meet the criteria anticipated to enhance performance profiles in CEC. With well-characterised peptides resembling the analytes, probing of the CEC system in a systematic manner (predominantly via the organic modifier content of the background electrolyte (BE)) reveals insigh…

Photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes in aqueous suspension of home prepared titanium dioxide

2008

In this paper some intrinsic electronic properties of home prepared (HP) TiO2 catalysts were investigated by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and quasi-Fermi level measurements. These powders were used for carrying out the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and CO2 in water; the selectivity for aldehyde formation was enhanced by the addition of small amounts of ethanol, a typical hole trap. The values of band gap, valence band and conduction band edges are almost identical for all the HP samples in which anatase phase is predominant, whereas appreciable differences can be noticed for an HP sample containing high amount of rutile phase. A comparative ATR-FTIR study of…

Antioxidant properties, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase activities in HepG2 cells with a fungal endophyte producing apigenin from pige…

2012

Abstract A fungal endophyte MD89 with obvious antioxidant activities was isolated from pigeon pea and identified as Chaetomium globosum by ITS sequence. Different fractions from MD89 culture were compared and evaluated by total phenol (TP) content, total flavonoid (TFL) content, DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and lipid peroxidation assays, respectively. Results showed that EtOAc extracts had high content of TP and TFL, and strong antioxidant activities (IC 50 value was 6.87, 15.19, 16.78 μg/mL, respectively). Furthermore, the EtOAc extracts were analyzed by LC–MS/MS and a good antioxidant compound, apigenin, was found. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione re…

Rod-Length Dependent Aggregation in a Series of Oligo(p-benzamide)-Block-Poly(ethylene glycol) Rod-Coil Copolymers

2005

The synthesis of a series of rod-coil diblock copolymers with flexible poly(ethylene oxide) chains (M n = 5 000 g mol -1 ) and rod blocks consisting of monodisperse oligo(p-benzamide)s is described. The formation of defined supramolecular aggregates in solution as well as the solid state has been analyzed. The length of the oligo(p-benzamide)s has been systematically varied from n = 1 to 7 units. The influence of n on aggregation in chloroform and aqueous solution was investigated by GPC as well as UV-vis spectroscopy. A critical aggregation length was found for chloroform (n = 5) and water (n = 4), below which no aggregation is observed under otherwise identical experimental conditions. Ag…

Adsorption of triblock copolymers and their homopolymers at laponite clay/solution interface. Role played by the copolymer nature

2009

The adsorption thermodynamics of copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide ( PO) units, at the laponite (RD) clay/liquid interface was determined at 298 K. The copolymer nature was tuned at molecular level by changing the hydrophilicity, the architecture and the molecular weight (Mw) keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Polyethylene (PEGs) and polypropylene (PPGs) glycols with varying Mw and their mixture were also investigated to discriminate the role of the EO and the PO segments in the adsorption process. Enthalpies of transfer of RD, at fixed concentration, from water to the aqueous macromolecule solutions as functions of the macromolecule molality were determined. They …

Numerical Simulation of the Kinetics of Radical Decay in Single-Pulse High-Energy Electron-Irradiated Polymer Aqueous Solutions

2019

A new method for the numerical simulation of the radiation chemistry of aqueous polymer solutions is introduced. The method makes use of a deterministic approach combining the conventional homogeneous radiation chemistry of water with the chemistry of polymer radicals and other macromolecular species. The method is applied on single-pulse irradiations of aqueous polymer solutions. The speciation of macromolecular species accounts for the variations in the number of alkyl radicals per chain, molecular weight, and number of internal loops (as a consequence of an intramolecular radical-radical combination). In the simulations, the initial polymer molecular weight, polymer concentration, and do…
