Effects of phenolic-like intercalated layered double hydroxides on poly(lactic acid) based nanocomposites

2015

Two phenolic-like antioxidants (AOs), 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate and 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetrametilcromano-2-carboxylate anions, were intercalated by anion exchange in layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The two AO-LDHs were dispersed by ultrasound-assisted solution mixing in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and the thermal oxidation stability of the composites was evaluated following the variation of the molecular weight by SEC, after a controlled aging process, and determining the oxidation induction time (OIT) by DSC. The results evidenced that the intercalation of both the AO molecules within the LDH galleries prevent their own thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation as well a…

On Demand One-Pot Mild Preparation of Layered Double Hydroxides and Their Hybrid Forms: Advances through the Epoxide Route.

2019

Epoxide ring opening driven alkalinization process was explored with the aim of preparing layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases on demand, at room temperature. Employing iodide as nucleophilic agent, the precipitation reaction can be driven under much lower halide concentrations. This scenario favors the selective intercalation of concomitant bulky oxo anions as nitrate or perchlorate in the LDH products, allowing for the one-pot synthesis of an LDH able to delaminate in formamide. Even large dicarboxylic acids, - O2 C-(CH2 )n -CO2 - , with n up to 8, can be quantitively intercalated within the growing LDH phase, providing a versatile one-pot route for hybrid LDHs as well. Under the mild co…

Tin compounds interaction with membranes of egg lecithin liposomes.

2007

This work is a continuation of earlier research concerning the influence of tin compounds on the dynamic properties of liposome membranes produced with lecithin hen egg yolks (EYL). The experiments were carried out at room temperature (about 25 ∞C). Four tin compounds were chosen, including three organic ones, (CH3)4Sn, (C2H5)4Sn and (C3H7)3SnCl, and one inorganic, SnCl2. The investigated compounds were admixed to water dispersions of liposomes. The content of the admixture changed within the range 0 mol-% to 11mol-% in proportion to EYL. Two spin probes were used in the experiment: 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine- 1-oxyl (TEMPO) and 2-ethyl-2-(15-methoxy-15-oxopentadecyl)-4,4-dimethyl-3-oxaz…

Determination of Plasma Lipid Hydroperoxides by an NADPH/NADP + Coupled Enzyme Reaction System. Evaluation of a Method

1998

Summary: Several techniques based on different principles have been proposed to measure lipid hydroperoxides. Enzymatic methods are sensitive and can be quite specific but they are subject to interference by inhibitors and not all are stoichiometric. The present work proposes some modifications of the Heath & Tappel (Anal Biochem 1976; 7:184—91) enzymatic method of determination of lipid hydroperoxides in order to standardize and automate it and to meet the analytical criteria required for a biological assay. The proposed new protocol and the automated assay give acceptable within-run and between-run precisions, with coefficients of variation of 3.34% and 5.80%, respectively, at the usual p…

Progress in Understanding of the Interactions between Functionalized Polyolefins and Organo-Layered Double Hydroxides

2013

The dispersion of organo-layered double hydroxides (O-LDH) in functionalized polyolefins (POs) is investigated. Two different polyethylene matrices (maleic anhydride (MAH) and diethyl maleate functionalized) are tested and a hydrogenated fatty acid modified LDH is used. The attention is focused on evidencing the interaction between the functional groups of the polymer and the O-LDH through FT-IR. Moreover, a combination of solvent fractionation, morphological, and rheological characterizations enables to gain a deeper insight into the structure of these composites. In particular, the formation of bridging bonds between the particles and MAH functionalized macromolecules is assumed, possibly…

Lauroyl peroxide as thermal initiator of lauryl methacrylate monolithic columns for CEC

2008

The preparation of lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-based monolithic columns for CEC using lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as thermal initiator of polymerization has been investigated. The influence of initiator amount and composition of porogenic solvent on the physical and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting LMA-based monoliths was evaluated. A comparison with LMA-based columns thermally polymerized with AIBN was performed. At a given porogenic solvent composition, LMA stationary phases initiated with LPO showed higher permeabilities and better efficiency values than those prepared using AIBN as initiator. The optimum polymerization mixture found for LPO initiator provided a minimum plate …

Bimodal Effect of Amphiphilic Biocide Concentrations on Fluidity of Lipid Membranes

1996

Abstract Using the spin label method (ESR) it has been shown that biologically active, amphiphilic compounds (quaternary ammonium salts -AS) containing polar heads with single and double positive charge caused, at low concentrations, decrease fluidity of liposome membranes formed with egg yolk lecithin (EYL). At higher concentrations an increase in fluidity was observed. With compounds having a single positive charge minimum fluidity of membrane structure occurs in the range of 1 to 3%, with compounds containing double positive charge -in the range of 4 -6 % . That effect does not depend on polar head size and length of alkyl chains of the AS used. Analysis of the electrostatic interaction …

Does catalase play a role in Adriamycin induced cardiotoxicity?

1980

Summary Adriamycin causes an increase of lipid peroxidation in mouse cardiac homogenates that is dependent on the concentration of the antiblastic. The same phenomenon is not observed in the hearts of mice treated with an elevated dose of Adriamycin in which, conversely, an increase of the antioxidizing enzyme catalase was noticed. The significance of these findings is discussed with relationship to the hypothesis of an enhanced free radicals formation at the basis of Adriamycin induced cardiotoxicity.

Thermodynamics of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide)−Poly(propylene oxide)−Poly(ethylene oxide)/Surfactant Mixtures. Effect of the Copolymer Molecular Weig…

2004

A calorimetric study was performed to focus attention on the interactions between copolymers and anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects were analyzed: (1) the hydrophobicity of the surfactant, (2) the change of the copolymer molecular weight, and (3) the nature of the hydrophilicity of the copolymer. To this purpose, the family of sodium alkanoates (sodium octanoate through sodium dodecanoate) and the triblock copolymers EO76PO 29EO76 (F68), EO103PO39EO 103 and EO132PO50EO132 were investigated. Comparing F68 and EO13PO30EO13 (L64), previously studied by us, provided information on the effect of the copolymer hydrophilicity. The experimental data were analyzed by means of a …
