Unfractionated Heparin Versus Subcutaneous Nadroparin in Adults Supported With Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: a Retrospective, Multi…

2021

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) requires constant management of coagulation. Whereas unfractionated heparin remains the anticoagulant of choice, experienced centers report high bleeding rates. Biocompatibility of the extracorporeal circuit enables management of anticoagulation with subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparins only. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of anticoagulation with subcutaneous nadroparin compared with unfractionated heparin during respiratory ECMO in patients. We assessed for thrombotic complications and number of bleeding and life-threatening bleeding events. Additionally, we evaluated the change in resistance to flow in the …

Development of a self-pumping extracorporeal blood oxygenation device characterized by a rotating shaft with embedded fiber packages.

2019

Introduction: To offer respiratory support for patients with lung disease, a novel technological solution for blood pumping and oxygenation is being developed. The pump–lung system was designed to integrate fiber membranes into six packages radially embedded in a rotating hollow shaft placed along the longitudinal axis of the device. Fiber packages are inclined with respect to the rotation axis so that the rotational motion of the rotating shaft allows a self-pumping system to be obtained. Method: Both hemodynamic and gas transfer performances were investigated using both in vitro experiments and in silico flow analyses. Results: The predicted flow velocity in the pump chamber was smooth an…

A two-circuit apparatus for the perfusion of the isolated rat brain.

1973

A perfusion apparatus for the isolated rat brain is described which has two recirculating systems running synchronously. Instantaneous transfer from one circulating system to the other is possible by use of a 2-way stopcock, enabling different media to be perfused through the brain without interrupting the perfusion. The feasibility of the system is demonstrated experimentally.
