Search for Low-Mass Dark-Sector Higgs Bosons

2012

See paper for full list of authors - 7 pages, 5 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett; Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the Standard Model-dark sector mixing angle and the dark sector coupling constant.

Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the sub-Tg relaxations in amorphous ethyl cellulose: A relaxation magnitude study

2005

Amorphous ethyl cellulose exhibits three secondary relaxations at temperatures below its glass transition. The fitted parameters that describe these processes and the comparison with other polysaccharides allow to ascribe the relaxations to lateral groups on one hand and to local main chain motion on the other hand. Their contributions to the dielectric constant overlap and induce a broad dielectric losses peak. The amplitude of one of these relaxations is found to decrease regularly with time. It is believed it comes from a gradual change of the polar groups chemical environment that constrains their motion.

Field-induced ordering phenomena and non-local elastic compliance in two-dimensional colloidal crystals

2008

Ordering phenomena in colloidal dispersions exposed to external one-dimensional, periodic fields or under confinement are studied systematically by Monte Carlo computer simulations. Such systems are useful models for the study of monolayers on a substrate. We find that the interaction with a substrate potential completely changes the miscibility of a binary, hard disc mixture at low external field amplitudes. The underlying ordering mechanisms leading to this laser-induced de-mixing differ, depending on which components interact with the substrate potential. Generic effects of confinement on crystalline order in two dimensions are studied in a model system of point particles interacting via…

Complex high-pressure polymorphism of barium tungstate

2012

We have studied BaWO 4 under compression at room temperature by means of x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. When compressed with neon as a pressure-transmitting medium (quasihydrostatic conditions), we found that BaWO 4 transforms from its low-pressure tetragonal structure into a much denser monoclinic structure. This result confirms our previous theoretical prediction based on ab initio calculations that the scheelite to BaWO 4-II transition occurs at room temperature if kinetic barriers are suppressed by pressure. However, our experiment without any pressure- transmitting medium has resulted in a phase transition to a completely different structure, suggesting nonhydrostaticity may…

Luminescence and absorption spectroscopy of Sn-related impurity centers in silica

2006

We report an experimental study on the absorption and luminescence spectra of oxygen deficient point defects in Sn-doped silica. The absorption band at 4.9 eV (B2β band) and the two related photoluminescence bands at ∼4.2 eV (singlet-singlet emission, S1 → S0) and at ∼3.2 eV (triplet-singlet emission, T1 → S0), linked by a thermally activated T1 → S1 inter-system crossing process (ISC), are studied as a function of temperature from 300 to 20 K. This approach allows us to investigate the dynamics properties of the matrix in the surroundings of the point defects and the effects of local disorder on the two relaxation processes from S1: the radiative channel to S0 and the ISC process to T1. We…

Luminescence activity of surface and interior Ge-oxygen deficient centers in silica

2005

We report a comparative study on the optical activity of surface and interior Ge–oxygen deficient centers in pressed porous and sol–gel Ge-doped silica, respectively. The experimental approach is based on the temperature dependence of the two photoluminescence bands at 4.2 (singlet–singlet emission, S1! S0) and 3.1 eV (triplet–singlet emission, T1! S0), excited within the absorption band at about 5 eV. Our data show that the phonon assisted intersystem crossing process, linking the two excited electronic states, more effective for surface than for interior centers in the temperature range 5–300 K. For both centers, a distribution of the activation energies of the process is found. Based on th…

Magnetic field control of the spin Seebeck effect

2015

The origin of the suppression of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect by applied magnetic fields is studied. We perform numerical simulations of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for an atomistic spin model and calculate the magnon accumulation in linear temperature gradients for different strengths of applied magnetic fields and different length scales of the temperature gradient. We observe a decrease of the magnon accumulation with increasing magnetic field and we reveal that the origin of this effect is a field dependent change of the frequency distribution of the propagating magnons. With increasing field the magnonic spin currents are reduced due to a suppressi…

Light scattering in inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids

2012

We derive the dynamical structure factor for an inhomogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid as can be formed in a confined strongly interacting one-dimensional gas. In view of current experimental progress in the field, we provide a simple analytic expression for the light-scattering cross section, requiring only the knowledge of the density dependence of the ground-state energy, as they can be extracted e.g. from exact or Quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and a Thomas-Fermi description. We apply the result to the case of one-dimensional quantum bosonic gases with dipolar interaction in a harmonic trap, using an energy functional deduced from Quantum Monte Carlo computations. We find an universal…

Influence ofsp−dhybridization on the electronic structure of Al-Mn alloys

2008

The influence of $sp\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ hybridization on the electronic structure of different Al-Mn alloys has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. Experimental evidence of a pseudogap in a crystalline binary Hume-Rothery alloy is provided. The pseudogap varies systematically with Mn concentration. The $sp\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ hybridization alone, even in the absence of Hume-Rothery mechanism, can produce the pseudogap. Existence of the pseudogap, suppression of the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}2p$ satellite, and decrease in the Doniach-\ifmmode \check{S}\else \v{S}\fi{}unji\ifmmode \acute{c}\else \'{c}\fi{} asymmetry parameter are the consequences of the $sp\text{\e…
