Minimum cause--maximum effect: the travelogue of a bullet.

2010

This case report involves a 57-year-old male, accidentally shot in the chest with a small bore firearm. The bullet entered the left hemithorax, disrupting the left internal mammarian artery. It then penetrated the anterior wall of the right ventricle causing a pericardial tamponade. After leaving the base of the right heart it perforated the diaphragm, the liver, the spleen and the pancreas. Finally, it penetrated the abdominal aorta 3 cm proximally to the coeliac trunk and reached its final position paravertebrally. This case report illustrates that the management of even minimum gunshot wounds requires a maximum variety of surgical skills. Keywords: Thoracoabdominal injury; Shotgun wound;…

Ki-67 assessment of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms: Systematic review and meta-analysis of manual vs. digital pathology scoring

2022

Ki-67 assessment is a key step in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) from all anatomic locations. Several challenges exist related to quantifying the Ki-67 proliferation index due to lack of method standardization and inter-reader variability. The application of digital pathology coupled with machine learning has been shown to be highly accurate and reproducible for the evaluation of Ki-67 in NENs. We systematically reviewed all published studies on the subject of Ki-67 assessment in pancreatic NENs (PanNENs) employing digital image analysis (DIA). The most common advantages of DIA were improvement in the standardization and reliability of Ki-67 evaluation, as well as its spee…

One precursor, three apolipoproteins: The relationship between two crustacean lipoproteins, the large discoidal lipoprotein and the high density lipo…

2014

The novel discoidal lipoprotein (dLp) recently detected in the crayfish, differs from other crustacean lipoproteins in its large size, apoprotein composition and high lipid binding capacity, We identified the dLp sequence by transcriptome analyses of the hepatopancreas and mass spectrometry. Further de novo assembly of the NGS data followed by BLAST searches using the sequence of the high density lipoprotein/1-glucan binding protein (HDL-BGBP) of Astacus leptodactylus as query revealed a putative precursor molecule with an open reading frame of 14.7 kb and a deduced primary structure of 4889 amino acids. The presence of an N-terminal lipid bind- ing domain and a DUF 1943 domain suggests the…

Distribution and coexistence of chromogranin A-, serotonin-and pancreastatin-like immunoreactivity in endocrine-like cells of the human anal canal

1992

The comparative distribution and coexistence of chromogranin A (CGA)-, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT)- and pancreastatin (PST)-like immunoreactivity in endocrine-like cells of the human anal canal was investigated by light-microscopic immunocytochemistry. The largest population of colorectal endocrine-like cells consisted of CGA-immunoreactive (ir) cells, followed by the 5-HT-ir and PST-ir cell population. In the anal transitional zone (ATZ), CGA- and 5-HT-immunoreactivity was equally distributed; ir-PST was confined to a smaller endocrine-like cell population. In the squamous zone and the perianal skin, Merkel cells in the basal layer of the epidermis and hair follicles exhibited ir…

INCIDENZA DEL DIABETE MELLITO TIPO 2 DOPO TRAPIANTO COMBINATO RENE-PANCREAS

2009

2008

Introduction. Starting from the observation of 9 cases of giant infected pancreatic cysts, which occurred from 1994 to 2004 at the Department of Oncological and Surgical Studies, the Authors' aim has been to evaluate whether a more thorough necrosectomy, carried-out under videoendoscopic control, associated with a nose-gastro-cavity tube, which ensures a continuous cleansing of the newly-formed cavity, and an appropriate positioning of the drainages, could reduce the morbility and allow a shorter recovery of the infected psuodocysts. Patients and methods. Of 73 cases of acute pancreatitis, observed from 1994 to 2004, 9 showed severe and acute pancreatitis, which included giant pseudocysts, …

Are pancreatic calcifications specific for the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis? A multidetector-row CT analysis.

2009

AIM: To retrospectively establish the most frequently encountered diagnoses in patients with pancreatic calcifications and to investigate whether the association of certain findings could be helpful for diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and three patients were included in the study. The location and distribution of calcifications; presence, nature, and enhancement pattern of pancreatic lesions; pancreatic atrophy and ductal dilatation were recorded. Differences between patients with chronic pancreatitis and patients with other entities were compared by using Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: Patients had chronic pancreatitis (n=70), neuroendocrine tumours (n=14), intraductal papilla…

The microsomal epoxide hydrolase has a single membrane signal anchor sequence which is dispensable for the catalytic activity of this protein

1994

The microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH) catalyses the hydrolysis of reactive epoxides which are formed by the action of cytochromes P-450 from xenobiotics. In addition it has been suggested that mEH might mediate the transport of bile acids. For the mEH it has been shown that it is co-translationally inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum. Here we demonstrate that the N-terminal 20 amino acid residues of this protein serve as its single membrane anchor signal sequence and that the function of this sequence can also be supplied by a cytochrome P-450 (CYP2B1) anchor signal sequence. The evidence supporting this conclusion is as follows: (i) the rat mEH and a CYP2B1-mEH fusion protein, in whic…
