Expression Patterns and Subcellular Localization of Carbonic Anhydrases Are Developmentally Regulated during Tooth Formation
2014
Abstract Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) play fundamental roles in several physiological events, and emerging evidence points at their involvement in an array of disorders, including cancer. The expression of CAs in the different cells of teeth is unknown, let alone their expression patterns during odontogenesis. As a first step towards understanding the role of CAs during odontogenesis, we used immunohistochemistry, histochemistry and in situ hybridization to reveal hitherto unknown dynamic distribution patterns of eight CAs in mice. The most salient findings include expression of CAII/Car2 not only in maturation-stage ameloblasts (MA) but also in the papillary layer, dental papilla mesenchyme, …
Multicomponent bionanocomposites based on clay nanoarchitectures for electrochemical devices
2019
[EN] Based on the unique ability of defibrillated sepiolite (SEP) to form stable and homogeneous colloidal dispersions of diverse types of nanoparticles in aqueous media under ultrasonication, multicomponent conductive nanoarchitectured materials integrating halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and chitosan (CHI) have been developed. The resulting nanohybrid suspensions could be easily formed into films or foams, where each individual component plays a critical role in the biocomposite: HNTs act as nanocontainers for bioactive species, GNPs provide electrical conductivity (enhanced by doping with MWCNTs) and, the CHI polymer matrix introduces mechanical and membrane pr…
Applying extracellular vesicles based therapeutics in clinical trials - an ISEV position paper.
2015
Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes and microvesicles, are released by different cell types and participate in physiological and pathophysiological processes. EVs mediate intercellular communication as cell-derived extracellular signalling organelles that transmit specific information from their cell of origin to their target cells. As a result of these properties, EVs of defined cell types may serve as novel tools for various therapeutic approaches, including (a) anti-tumour therapy, (b) pathogen vaccination, (c) immune-modulatory and regenerative therapies and (d) drug delivery. The translation of EVs into clinical therapies requires the categorization of EV-based therapeutics …
Triphenyl[(4-phenylbenzoyl)methyl]phosphonium trifluoromethanesulfonate
2010
In the cation of the title compound, C32H26OP+·CF3O3S−, the dihedral angle between the benzene rings of the biphenyl group is 42.37 (8)°. In the crystal, the cations and anions interact through intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming chains parallel to the b axis. These chains are further linked by C—H...π stacking interactions into layers parallel to the bc plane.
Variable presence of 5-methylcytosine in commercial RNA and DNA
2015
Nucleoside methylations and other nucleic acid modifications have recently encountered a surge in interest, prompted, among other things, by the detection of methylation and active demethylation of DNA and mRNA by similar mechanisms. In DNA, deoxycytidine methylation by Dnmt enzymes generates 5-methyldeoxycytidine,1 an important epigenetic mark that typically causes inactivation of transcription of the methylated promoter region. Recent exciting developments have shown that these marks are not concrete-cast, but can be actively removed by the oxidative action of TET enzymes,2 which generate, through a series of 2-electron oxidations, first hydroxymethylcytidine (hm5C), then formyldeoxycytid…
Predictors of residual T1 high grade on re-transurethral resection in a large multi-institutional cohort of patients with primary T1 high-grade/grade…
2018
The aim of this multi-institutional study was to identify predictors of residual high-grade (HG) disease at re-transurethral resection (reTUR) in a large cohort of primary T1 HG/Grade 3 (G3) bladder cancer patients. A total of 1155 patients with primary T1 HG/G3 bladder cancer from 13 academic institutions that underwent a reTUR within 6 weeks after first TUR were evaluated. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association of predictive factors with residual HG at reTUR. Residual HG cancer was found in 288 (24.9%) of patients at reTUR. Patients presenting residual HG cancer were more likely to have carcinoma in situ (CIS) at first resection (p=25 kg/m2. On multivariable …
Hydrogen Peroxide Diffusion through Enamel and Dentin
2018
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro diffusion of commercial bleaching products (hydrogen peroxide (HP) or carbamide peroxide (CP) based) with different application protocols. Human enamel-dentin discs were obtained and divided into 20 groups. Four commercial products based on HP (Pola Office+(PO), Perfect Bleach (PB), Norblanc Office-automix (NO), and Boost (BT)), and one based on CP (PolaDay CP (PD)), were evaluated with different application protocols (3 applications ×
Effectiveness of an Interventional Program to Improve Blood Pressure Control in Hypertensive Patients at High Risk for Developing Heart Failure: HERO…
2010
J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). The Efectividad de un Programa de Intervencion en el Control de la Presion Arterial de los Hipertensos en Riesgo de Desarrollar Insuficiencia Cardiaca (HEROIC) study was designed to assess whether an educational program for primary care physicians could improve blood pressure (BP) control in hypertensive patients at high risk for developing heart failure. The program contained a combination of educational training (live group sessions or online training) and information feedback. Two hundred twenty-six physicians completed the program and provided valid data in 2489 patients before and 2168 after 1 year. There was a small but significant reduction of −1.1 mm Hg…
