Diffusion of Drone Journalism: the Case of Finland, 2011-2020
2020
This article details Finnish news organizations’ adoption of drones for journalistic purposes from 2011 to 2020. The theoretical starting point of the article is Rogers’ (1962) diffusion of innovations theory, which explains how new ideas and technologies spread in societies. The main empirical data for the study were derived from a phone survey conducted among the 80 most popular newspapers in Finland. The findings reveal that drone journalism in Finland has already diffused from a few pioneering organizations to a large number of newsrooms, including regional, mid-sized newspapers. Most of the newspapers are either using in-house drones, buying commissioned images, or using both strategie…
Translational readthrough of ciliopathy genes BBS2 and ALMS1 restores protein, ciliogenesis and function in patient fibroblasts
2021
Abstract Background Ciliary dysfunction underlies a range of genetic disorders collectively termed ciliopathies, for which there are no treatments available. Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is characterised by multisystemic involvement, including rod-cone dystrophy and renal abnormalities. Together with Alstrom syndrome (AS), they are known as the ‘obesity ciliopathies’ due to their common phenotype. Nonsense mutations are responsible for approximately 11% and 40% of BBS and AS cases, respectively. Translational readthrough inducing drugs (TRIDs) can restore full-length protein bypassing in-frame premature termination codons, and are a potential therapeutic approach for nonsense-mediated ciliop…
S-Detect characterization of focal solid breast lesions: a prospective analysis of inter-reader agreement for US BI-RADS descriptors
2020
Background: To assess inter-reader agreement for US BI-RADS descriptors using S-Detect: a computer-guided decision-making software assisting in US morphologic analysis. Methods: 73 solid focal breast lesions (FBLs) (mean size: 15.9 mm) in 73 consecutive women (mean age: 51 years) detected at US were randomly and independently assessed according to the BI-RADS US lexicon, without and with S-Detect, by five independent reviewers. US-guided core-biopsy and 24-month follow-up were considered as standard of reference. Kappa statistics were calculated to assess inter-operator agreement, between the baseline and after S-Detect evaluation. Agreement was graded as poor (≤ 0.20), moderate (0.21–0.40)…
4,4-Di-fluoro-2,3;5,6-bis-(tetra-methylene)-4-bora-3a,4a-di-aza-s-indacene (LD540).
2014
The title compound, C18H21BF2N2, is a lipophilic dye based on a BODIPY fluorophore backbone, which was developed for microscopic imaging of lipid droplets; the molecule has a planar BODIPY core [dihedral angle between the pyrrole rings = 2.3 (3)°] and two tetramethylene substituents at the 2,3- and 5,6-positions in a half-chair conformation. One of the tetramethylene substituents is disordered over two two sets of sites with site occupancies of 0.5. In the crystal, pairs of C—H...F interactions link the molecules into inversion dimers. Neighbouring dimers are linked by further C—H...F interactions, forming an infinite array. C—H...π and π–π [centroid–centroid distance = 4.360 (3) Å] interac…
Description of kraft cooking and oxygen–alkali delignification of bamboo by pulp and dissolving material analysis
2008
Abstract The oxygen delignification of two bamboo ( Bambusa procera ) kraft pulps with kappa numbers of 13.6 and 20.0 were studied under typical conditions. Based on detailed analysis data on both the kraft and oxygen-delignified pulps and the corresponding spent liquors (black liquors and oxygen stage effluents), three yield and four selectivity estimation methods, utilizing component material balances, were tested resulting in the value ranges 96.2–97.9% and 43.5–60.4%, respectively, for oxygen delignification process studied. The traditional selectivity using the viscosity and kappa number relation was 66.9–68.4%. The studied bamboo kraft pulps behaved typically as birch kraft pulps duri…
The Quest for Raw Materials in the British Paper Trade : The Development of the Bamboo Pulp and Paper Industry in British India up to 1939
2018
The British paper trade history was defined since the mid-1850s by a quest for a new raw material to replace rags. The requirements of the paper trade were first met by a discovery that esparto grass from Spain, and later from North Africa, could be utilised in British mills. Beginning in the late 1870s, the success of using esparto encouraged mill developments in British India. The increased dependence on imported wood pulp, the likelihood of a pulp famine, and the consequent increase in price for imported wood pulp drew attention to the possibility of making commercial volumes of good quality pulp from indigenous Indian grasses. Bamboo began being treated after the First World War, when t…
Delignification of bamboo (Bambusa procera acher)
2004
Abstract Delignification of bamboo ( Bambusa procera acher ) was carried out by conventional kraft and soda pulping under varying conditions to determine the relationships between selected cooking parameters (EA 14–20%, sulfidity 0–45%, maximum temperature 165 and 170 °C, and time at maximum temperature 30–95 min) and pulp properties (kappa number, viscosity, and yield). Results indicated that in order to obtain relatively low kappa numbers (17–24), high sulfidity (35–45%) at lower EA (14–16%) increased both pulp viscosity and yield compared to the case of low sulfidity (0–15%) at higher EA (16–18%). Pulp with lower kappa numbers (11–15) and acceptable viscosities (1080–1190 ml/g) can be ob…

Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in deer ked pupae, adult keds and moose blood in Finland
2014
SUMMARYThe deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) is a haematophagous ectoparasite of cervids that harbours haemotrophic Bartonella. A prerequisite for the vector competence of the deer ked is the vertical transmission of the pathogen from the mother to its progeny and transstadial transmission from pupa to winged adult. We screened 1154 pupae and 59 pools of winged adult deer keds from different areas in Finland for Bartonella DNA using PCR. Altogether 13 pupa samples and one winged adult deer ked were positive for the presence of Bartonella DNA. The amplified sequences were closely related to either B. schoenbuchensis or B. bovis. The same lineages were identified in eight blood samples collected fro…
