Viral encephalitis in Parry-Romberg syndrome

2019

A 28-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic for acute onset of headache, aphasia and confusion, followed by a first episode of generalised tonic–clonic seizures. She had a history of left-sided migraine, accompanied by visual aura and right arm dysesthesia since the age of 20 years and

Eye Movement Involvement in Parry-Romberg Syndrome: A Clinicopathologic Case Report

2008

We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who developed a progressive bilateral disease in which the eye motility disorder-diplopia-is the outstanding feature over a period of 12 years. The muscle biopsy of the medial rectus muscle did not show any trace of striated muscle. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pathological report in an affected extraocular muscle of a patient with Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS). Previous rare reports of diplopia in PRS have been attributed to enophthalmos, progressive atrophy of the orbit, ocular motor nerve dysfunction, or mechanical restrictions.

Progressive facial hemiatrophy with associated osseous lesions

2007

Progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) is a rare condition characterized by the slow, progressive appearance of a unilateral facial atrophy that affects the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bone. We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient whose cutaneous symptoms commenced in 1987 in the form of a purplish erythema on the left side of her face and neck, which subsequently remitted giving rise to an indurated region in the left maxillary region. Since 1995 until the present day, she has developed facial hemiatrophy on the left side accompanied by progressive osseous reabsorption of the upper maxilla and left mandible with atrophy of soft tissue. The association of the onset of PFH…

Progressive hemifacial atrophy : Case report

2006

Progressive Hemifacial Atrophy, also known as Parry-Romberg Syndrome, is an uncommon degenerative and poorly understood condition. It is characterized by a slow and progressive atrophy affecting one side of the face. The incidence and the cause of this alteration is unknown. A cerebral disturbance of fat metabolism has been proposed as a primary cause. This can be the result of a trophic malformation of Cervical Sympathetic Nervous System. Possible factors that are involved in the pathogenesis include trauma, viral infections, heredity, endocrine disturbances and auto-immunity, among others. The most common complications that appear in association to this health disorder are: trigeminal neu…

Parry Romberg Syndrome with localized scleroderma: a case report

2014

Parry Romberg syndrome(PRS) is a rare acquired poorly understood neurocutaneous syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by slow progressive atrophic changes commonly affecting one half of the face. The exact incidence and etiology towards the syndrome remains unclear. Apart from the multifactorial etiology proposed, the possible primary cause is mainly attributed to the cerebral disturbance of the fat metabolism. The syndrome overlaps with “en coup de sabre” morphea, with an ill defined relationship existing between the two. Parry Romberg Syndrome is an invalidating lesion that may be associated with different neurological, cutaneous, ocular, dental and autoimmune abnormalities. This rep…

Morphea en coup de sabre and hemifacial atrophy in an interdisciplinary approach

2020

The increase in the degree of fluctuation asymmetry is accompanied, among others, by diseases such as morphea en coup de sabre (morphea ECDS) or Parry‑Romberg syndrome (PHA). Patients suffering from them struggle not only with dermatological defects, but also with neurological, rheumatological, orthopedic, ophthalmological and dental symptoms. Morphological and functional disorders and craniofacial deformities related to them often generate psychosocial problems. The complexity of the issues to be solved proves the necessity of undertaking interdisciplinary actions aimed at developing objective diagnostic and therapeutic protocols, restoring (especially in pediatric patients) as close as po…
