Polydopamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles for the determination of nitro musks in environmental water samples by stir bar sorptive-dispersive microe…

2021

Magnetic-based microextraction approaches have gained popularity in recent years due to the magnetic properties of the extraction phases allowing to handle them easier and more efficiently. This work describes a magnetic-based analytical method for the determination of the family of nitro musks in environmental water samples. These compounds have been of great concern due to their environmental impacts and potential health effects. The method is based on stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) as extraction approach, prior to thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (TD-GC-MS). For this purpose, polydopamine-coated cobalt ferrite magnetic nan…

Development of stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction mediated by magnetic nanoparticles and its analytical application to the determination of…

2014

A novel microextraction technique combining the principles of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (DμSPE) is presented. The main feature of the method is the use of a neodymium-core stirring bar physically coated with a hydrophobic magnetic nanosorbent. Depending on stirring speed, the magnetic sorbent either acts as a coating material to the stir bar, thus affording extraction alike SBSE, or as a dispersed nanosorbent medium for the collection and extraction of the target analytes, in close analogy to DμSPE. Once the stirring process is finished, the strong magnetic field of the stir bar prevails again and rapidly retrieves the dispersed MNPs. Al…

Application of stable isotopes and AF4/ICP-SFMS for simultaneous tracing and quantification of iron oxide nanoparticles in a sediment–slurry matrix

2016

One major challenge in nanomaterial analysis, especially in complex environmental matrices, is the unambiguous differentiation between natural and engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). Particularly with regard to the investigation of ENM's/engineered nanoparticle's (ENPs) fate, analytical methods are needed allowing for tracing and sensitive quantification. Several ENPs are metal-based and contain elements being omnipresent in environmental matrices (e.g., Al, Ti, Zn, Fe and non-metal Si) – hence, high background levels of these elements are expected, compromising sensitive detection. In this work we developed successfully a combined approach of stable isotope labeling (tracing) and reverse post…

Search for Subsolar Mass Ultracompact Binaries in Advanced LIGO's Second Observing Run

2019

We present a search for subsolar mass ultracompact objects in data obtained during Advanced LIGO’s second observing run. In contrast to a previous search of Advanced LIGO data from the first observing run, this search includes the effects of component spin on the gravitational waveform. We identify no viable gravitational-wave candidates consistent with subsolar mass ultracompact binaries with at least one component between \ud0.2\ud \ud \udM\ud⊙\ud–\ud1.0\ud \ud \udM\ud⊙\ud. We use the null result to constrain the binary merger rate of (\ud0.2\ud \ud \udM\ud⊙\ud, \ud0.2\ud \ud \udM\ud⊙\ud) binaries to be less than \ud3.7\ud×\ud10\ud5\ud \ud \udGpc\ud−\ud3\ud \udyr\ud−\ud1\udand the binary …

Search for Subsolar-Mass Ultracompact Binaries in Advanced LIGO's First Observing Run

2018

We present the first Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo search for ultracompact binary systems with component masses between 0.2 $M_\odot$ - 1.0 $M_\odot$ using data taken between September 12, 2015 and January 19, 2016. We find no viable gravitational wave candidates. Our null result constrains the coalescence rate of monochromatic (delta function) distributions of non-spinning (0.2 $M_\odot$, 0.2 $M_\odot$) ultracompact binaries to be less than $1.0 \times 10^6 \text{Gpc}^{-3} \text{yr}^{-1}$ and the coalescence rate of a similar distribution of (1.0 $M_\odot$, 1.0 $M_\odot$) ultracompact binaries to be less than $1.9 \times 10^4 \text{Gpc}^{-3} \text{yr}^{-1}$ (at 90 percent confidence). N…

GW170817: Measurements of Neutron Star Radii and Equation of State

2018

On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were neutron stars that are described by the same equation…

Multifunctional two-photon active silica-coated Au@MnO Janus particles for selective dual functionalization and imaging.

2014

Monodisperse multifunctional and nontoxic Au@MnO Janus particles with different sizes and morphologies were prepared by a seed-mediated nucleation and growth technique with precise control over domain sizes, surface functionalization, and dye labeling. The metal oxide domain could be coated selectively with a thin silica layer, leaving the metal domain untouched. In particular, size and morphology of the individual (metal and metal oxide) domains could be controlled by adjustment of the synthetic parameters. The SiO2 coating of the oxide domain allows biomolecule conjugation (e.g., antibodies, proteins) in a single step for converting the photoluminescent and superparamagnetic Janus nanopar…

Ultrasmall Rigid Particles as Multimodal Probes for Medical Applications

2011

International audience; Ultrasmall but multifunctional: Rigid imaging particles that are smaller than 5 nm in size can be obtained in a top-down process starting from a core–shell structure (core=gadolinium oxide; shell=polysiloxane). They represent the first multifunctional silica-based particles that are sufficiently small to escape hepatic clearance and enable animal imaging by four complementary techniques.

POLYASPARTAMIDE-POLYLACTIDE GRAFT COPOLYMERS WITH TUNABLE PROPERTIES FOR THE REALIZATION OF FLUORESCENT NANOPARTICLES FOR IMAGING

2015

Here, the synthesis and the characterization of novel amphiphilic graft copolymers with tunable properties, useful in obtaining polymeric fluorescent nanoparticles for application in imaging, are described. These copolymers are obtained by chemical conjugation of rhodamine B (RhB) moieties, polylactic acid (PLA), and O-(2-aminoethyl)-O'-methyl poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA). In particular, PHEA is first functionalized with RhB to obtain PHEA-RhB with a derivatization degree in RhB (DDRhB ) equal to 0.55 mol%. By varying the reaction conditions, different amounts of PLA are grafted on PHEA-RhB to obtain PHEA-RhB-PLA with DDPLA equal to 1.9, 4…
