Measurement of the differential cross sections for isolated direct photon pair production in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV

2013

We present measurements of direct photon pair production cross sections using 8.5 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider. The results are presented as differential distributions of the photon pair invariant mass d sigma/dM(gamma gamma), pair transverse momentum d sigma/dp(T)(gamma gamma) azimuthal angle between the photons d sigma/d Delta(phi)(gamma gamma), and polar scattering angle in the Collins-Soper frame d sigma/d vertical bar cos theta*vertical bar. Measurements are performed for isolated photons with transverse momenta p(T)(gamma) > 18 (17) GeV for the leading (next-to-leading) photon in P-T, pseudorapidities vertical bar eta(g…

Transverse momenta of partons and dimuons in QCD

1978

Abstract Intrinsic (primordial) transverse momenta of quarks and gluons are calculated as well as those arising from recoil (bremsstrahlung) effects, using only the well-known parton distributions as input. The intrinsic kT's lie typically in the range of 150–250 MeV. Recent approaches using heuristic integro-differential equations for kT distributions of partons are shown to disagree with the results obtained by rigorous QCD calculations. The transverse momenta of dimuon pairs produced in pp → μ+μ− + X at the ISR can be solely explained by dynamical recoil effects, i.e., q q →(μ + μ − ) g and gq →(μ + μ − ) q , and no significant intrinsic transverse parton momenta are required. These dimu…

Scale evolution of nuclear parton distributions

1998

Using the NMC and E665 nuclear structure function ratios $F_2^A/F_2^D$ and $F_2^A/F_2^{C}$ from deep inelastic lepton-nucleus collisions, and the E772 Drell--Yan dilepton cross sections from proton-nucleus collisions, and incorporating baryon number and momentum sum rules, we determine nuclear parton distributions at an initial scale $Q_0^2$. With these distributions, we study QCD scale evolution of nuclear parton densities. The emphasis is on small values of $x$, especially on scale dependence of nuclear shadowing. As the main result, we show that a consistent picture can be obtained within the leading twist DGLAP evolution, and in particular, that the calculated $Q^2$ dependence of $F_2^{…

Parton shower evolution in a 3-d hydrodynamical medium

2008

We present a Monte Carlo simulation of the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) shower developing after a hard process embedded in a heavy-ion collision. The main assumption is that the cascade of branching partons traverses a medium which (consistent with standard radiative energy loss pictures) is characterized by a local transport coefficient qhat which measures the virtuality per unit length transferred to a parton which propagates in this medium. This increase in parton virtuality alters the development of the shower and in essence leads to extra induced radiation and hence a softening of the momentum distribution in the shower. After hadronization, this leads to the concept of a…

Neutral pion production with respect to centrality and reaction plane in Au+Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

2013

The PHENIX experiment has measured the production of pi(0)s in Au + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV. The new data offer a fourfold increase in recorded luminosity, providing higher precision and a larger reach in transverse momentum, p(T), to 20 GeV/c. The production ratio of eta/pi(0) is 0.46 +/- 0.01(stat) +/- 0.05(syst), constant with p(T) and collision centrality. The observed ratio is consistent with earlier measurements, as well as with the p + p and d + Au values. pi(0) are suppressed by a factor of 5, as in earlier findings. However, with the improved statistical precision a small but significant rise of the nuclear modification factor R-AA vs p(T), with a slope of 0.0106 +/-(0…

A QCD analysis for nuclear PDFs at NNLO

2019

A new QCD analysis for nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is presented. The framework of the analysis, including the form of the parameterization as well as the included DIS data sets, are discussed. The results of this QCD analysis are compared to the existing nPDF sets and to the fitted data. The presented framework is based on an open-source tool, xFitter, which has been modified to be applicable also for a nuclear PDF analysis. The required modifications are covered as well. Finally, an outlook for the next developments of the QCD analysis for nuclear PDFs is given.

Measurements of inclusive vector boson production from ATLAS

2015

The production of the W and Z bosons is the standard candle process at the LHC. Measurement of the transverse momentum of the Z boson performed by the ATLAS collaboration is reported for sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The measurement is sensitive to soft resummation effects for small momentum transfers and to multiple hard jet emissions for large momentum transfers, probing QCD in a unique way. Measurements of the Drell-Yan production at low and high invariant masses are reported and compared to predictions based on NNLO QCD corrected for electroweak effects. A measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry for Z/gamma* production is used to determine the weak mixing angle. A measurement of the cr…

One-loop amplitudes for four-point functions with two external massive quarks and two external massless partons up toO(ε2)

2006

We present complete analytical O({epsilon}{sup 2}) results on the one-loop amplitudes relevant for the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) quark-parton model description of the hadroproduction of heavy quarks as given by the so-called loop-by-loop contributions. All results of the perturbative calculation are given in the dimensional regularization scheme. These one-loop amplitudes can also be used as input in the determination of the corresponding NNLO cross sections for heavy flavor photoproduction, and in photon-photon reactions.

Measurement of Prompt Photon Production In Hadronic-z Decays

1993

The production of isolated photons in hadronic Z decays is measured with the ALEPH detector at LEP using a sample of 450 000 hadronic events. The corrected rate is given for several values of the minimum invariant mass squared cut between the photon and the jets. This measurement of final state radiation from the quarks is compared with the predictions of parton shower models JETSET, ARIADNE and HERWIG as well as with the predictions of QCD matrix element calculations.
