Heat-to-current conversion of low-grade heat from a thermocapacitive cycle by supercapacitors

2015

Thermal energy is abundantly available, and especially low-grade heat is often wasted in industrial processes as a by-product. Tapping into this vast energy reservoir with cost-attractive technologies may become a key element for the transition to an energy-sustainable economy and society. We propose a novel heat-to-current converter which is based on the temperature dependence of the cell voltage of charged supercapacitors. Using a commercially available supercapacitor, we observed a thermal cell-voltage rise of around 0.6 mV K-1 over a temperature window of 0 degrees C to 65 degrees C. Within our theoretical model, this can be used to operate a Stirling-like charge-voltage cycle whose eff…

Verso una dimensione narrativa delle mappe

2021

Between the idea and the construction of the architecture the drawing plays a central role to connect the different protagonists of a project. It involves the community by envisaging unprecedented perspectives. Writing is useful to explicit the graphics and establish a new order in the design reasoning. The relationships between signs and meanings multiply in recent information systems in which it seems possible to conclude a lot (thanks to numerical and spatial data) but sometimes a synthesis is missing though that synthesis is fundamental to create new physical experiences. For the exploration of the use of different architectural languages and for the push towards the project rather than a sterile cataloging the case of the Piano Programma for the historic center of Palermo (Giuseppe Samonà Giancarlo De Carlo Umberto Di Cristina Anna Maria Sciarra Borzí 1979-82) reveals to be ambitious. Giuseppe Samonà integrates the classical representation based on Monge's projections with photographs and iconic drawings associating signs with a linguistic-structural communication capable of expressing the relationships between the parts at the basis of a morphological approach to the plan. The graphic story ("second language") of the urban fabric has creative implications expressed by images and annotations ("first language") useful for decoding them. Since the plan focuses on the potential of a storytelling that orients the imagination of its readers (designers citizens politicians) it can contribute to the study titled "B4R– BRANDING 4 RESILIENCE - Tourist infrastructure as a tool to enhance small villages by drawing resilient communities and new open habitats” as a starting point for the mapping in which GIS analysis and multidisciplinary data (geometric topological and quantitative) relating to some villages of the internal Sicily shall translate into a new architectural urban and landscape quality.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Toxic Proteins and Peptides

1994

Many animals produce poisonous substances which, even at a relatively low dose, are deleterious or lethal to other organisms, including man. They may serve on the one hand to disable or kill prey, or on the other hand as a protection or defence against predators. These substances are mostly produced by special glands, and both poison reservoirs and specialized structures for delivering the secretion, e.g. stings or modified mouthparts or fangs, are usually also present. In accordance with the aims of this book, we will deal with the comparative biochemistry of the animal toxins as natural products with special structures and functions; a discussion of the mechanisms of their pharmacological…

The iGEM Competition

2014

The international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a well-known example of synthetic biology and a workbench for the development of heterodox, multidisciplinary and frontier work made by undergraduate students. We review the origin, organization and structure of the competition; we describe how an iGEM team can be set in place, and briefly summarize some of the main milestones and challenges of a competition that is only one decade old. We discuss the links of the competition with the Registry of Standard Biological Parts and the flagship role of iGEM as a very trench of the synthetic biology revolution.

The transient gravitational-wave sky

2013

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

Quantum gravity with THESEUS

2021

AbstractIn this paper we explore the possibility to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo with a sample of Gamma-Ray Bursts detected by the THESEUS satellite. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that (in a series expansion) depend on a given power of the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10− 23 for photons in the soft γ −ray band (100 keV). The dominant effect is determined by the first significant term of this expansion. If the first order in this expansion is relevant, these theories imply a Lorentz Invaria…

Determination of aluminum at the parts per billion level by solvent extraction and flame atomic emission spectrometry

1991

A new method for the determination of aluminum at the parts per billion level, by N 2 O/ C 2 H 2 flame emission spectrometry with prior solvent extraction with acetylacetone or 8-hydroxyquinoline in 4-methylpentan-2-one, has been performed. The influence of extraction conditions and instrumental parameters on the sensitivity, precision, and dynamic range of the emission calibration curves have been studied. The limit of detection is between 5 and 10 ppb for both ligands, the variation coefficient being 0.2 and 3% at levels of 75 and 25 ppb, respectively. The method has been applied to the determination of Al in water and the results obtained are compared with those found by the standard add…

Low-temperature phosphorescence of 1,4-benzodiazepines

1991

Abstract A highly sensitive method for the low-temperature phosphorescence determination of a series of 1,4-benzodiazepines has been developed. Oxazepam has been used as a test molecule to study the effects of instrumental parameters, such as time decay, gate time, excitation and emission slits, and ordinate, on the phosphorescence spectra. The corresponding analytical parameters have been established for different concentration levels. Under the best sensitivity conditions a limit of detection of 16 parts per trillion (ppt) for oxazepam, 3.8 ppt for medazepam, 2 ppt for prazepam, 5 × 10 −3 ppt for diazepam, and 0.09 ppt for lorazepam could be obtained. The proposed method is thus the most …
