Downregulation of the constitutive tapasin expression in human tumor cells of distinct origin and its transcriptional upregulation by cytokines

2001

Human tumor cells frequently exhibit abnormalities in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I surface expression which can be due to structural alterations and/or dysregulation of various components of the MHC class I antigen processing machinery, such as HLA class I heavy and light chains, the peptide transporter and the proteasome subunits. Although several cofactors critical for proper MHC class I assembly have been identified, their contribution to the immune escape phenotype of tumor cells has not been analyzed. In order to determine whether tapasin deficits are an integral part of immune escape mechanisms of human tumors, we studied the constitutive and cytokine-regulated e…

From stationary state to endogenous growth: International trade in the mathematical formulation of the Ricardian system

2015

In his 1814–15 correspondence with Malthus and in his Essay on Profits, Ricardo championed the free importation of wage goods as a highly effective growth-enhancing policy. In order to capture this aspect in the mathematical formulation of the Ricardian system first introduced by Pasinetti in 1960 in the context of a closed economy, we produce a variant of that model where the economy is a small open one. We show that this economy is characterised by endogenous growth since the growth rate is bounded from below and we locate two thresholds concerning the allocation of labour among the two sectors of the economy and the pattern of international trade.

From endogenous growth to stationary state: The world economy in the mathematical formulation of the Ricardian system

2016

AbstractWe analyse international trade in a Pasinetti–Ricardo growth model in the world economy scenario in which several small trading countries coexist and international commodity prices are determined by the interplay of supply and demand amongst them. We demonstrate that all the trading countries eventually reach the stationary state, though this process is not monotonic and the dynamics of capital and population may actually push some countries towards the stationary state and others away from it. We also use our model to assess an argument which Malthus employed in the second edition of An Essay on the Principle of Population (1803) to support a policy of agricultural protectionism.

Rats bred for low aerobic capacity become promptly fatigued and have slow metabolic recovery after stimulated, maximal muscle contractions.

2012

AIM. Muscular fatigue is a complex phenomenon affected by muscle fiber type and several metabolic and ionic changes within myocytes. Mitochondria are the main determinants of muscle oxidative capacity which is also one determinant of muscle fatigability. By measuring the concentrations of intracellular stores of high-energy phosphates it is possible to estimate the energy production efficiency and metabolic recovery of the muscle. Low intrinsic aerobic capacity is known to be associated with reduced mitochondrial function. Whether low intrinsic aerobic capacity also results in slower metabolic recovery of skeletal muscle is not known. Here we studied the influence of intrinsic aerobic capac…

High frequency of functionally active Melan-a-specific T cells in a patient with progressive immunoproteasome-deficient melanoma.

2004

AbstractTumor-reactive T cells play an important role in cancer immunosurveillance. Applying the multimer technology, we report here an unexpected high frequency of Melan-A–specific CTLs in a melanoma patient with progressive lymph node metastases, consisting of 18 and 12.8% of total peripheral blood and tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells, respectively. Melan-A–specific CTLs revealed a high cytolytic activity against allogeneic Melan-A–expressing target cells but failed to kill the autologous tumor cells. Loading of the tumor cells with Melan-A peptide reversed the resistance to killing, suggesting impaired function of the MHC class I antigen processing and presentation pathway. Mutations of t…

Pasireotide treatment reduces cardiometabolic risk in Cushing’s disease patients: an Italian, multicenter study

2018

Purpose: Patients with Cushing’s disease (CD) experience metabolic alterations leading to increased cardiovascular mortality. Recently, the visceral adiposity index (VAI) has been proposed as a marker of visceral adipose tissue dysfunction (ATD) and of the related cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to evaluate the impact of 12-month pasireotide treatment on cardiometabolic risk in CD patients. Methods: This is a multicentre, prospective, and observational study. Sixteen CD patients, referred to the Endocrine Units of the University Hospitals of Messina, Napoli, Padova, and Palermo (Italy), successfully treated with pasireotide for 12 month have been enrolled. In all patients, we assessed anthro…

The bilateral field advantage effect in memory precision.

2018

Previous research has demonstrated that visual working memory performance is better when visual items are allocated in both left and right visual fields than within only one hemifield. This phenomenon is called the bilateral field advantage (BFA). The BFA is thought to be driven by an enhanced probability of storage, rather than by greater precision. In the present experiments, we sought to test whether the BFA can also extend to precision when the parameters of the task are modified. Using a moderate number of to-be-remembered items and 400 ms presentation time, we found better precision in the bilateral condition than in the unilateral condition. The classic BFA was still found in the for…

Norwegian version of the Nutritional Form for the Elderly: sufficient psychometric properties for performing institutional screening of elderly patie…

2009

The objective of this study was to test if the Norwegian version of the nutritional screening instrument entitled Nutritional Form for the Elderly (NUFFE-NO) demonstrates sufficient evidence of reliability and validity, including sensitivity and specificity, when applied to a select group of elderly hospital patients. The hypothesis was that NUFFE-NO has sufficient psychometric properties to be used as a screening instrument. The model used for the testing procedure was designed to test reliability (homogeneity and stability) and validity (criterion-related, concurrent validity, and construct validity) including sensitivity and specificity in a cross-sectional study. One-hundred fifty-eight…

The safety attitudes questionnaire for out-of-hours service in primary healthcare—Psychometric properties of the Croatian version

2020

The aim of the study was to assess the reliability and construct validity of the Croatian trans- lation of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire—Ambulatory version (SAQ-AV) in the out-of- hours (OOH) primary care setting. A cross-sectional observational study using anonymous web-survey was carried out targeting a convenience sample of 358 health professionals working in the Croatian OOH primary care service. The final sample consisted of 185 questionnaires (response rate 51.7%). Psychometric properties were assessed using exploratory hierarchical factor analysis with Schmid-Leiman rotation to bifactor solution, McDonald’s ω, and Cronbach’s α. Five group factors were identified: Organization cl…
