Donor site morbidity of the posterior conchal region.

2009

BACKGROUND The perichondral cutaneous graft (PCCG) from the posterior conchal region is an elegant solution for the coverage of facial defects with particular stability requirements. The donor defect can easily be covered with a transposition flap from the postauricular region. Although this region is a common donor site for skin grafts and has an important supporting function for glasses or hearing aids, little is known about long-term morbidity after graft harvest. OBJECTIVE To assess the morbidity of the posterior concha and the postauricular region in terms of pain, scar formation, and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study of 16 patients who had a PCCG harves…

Epidural ropivacaine -- where are the benefits? A prospective, randomized, double-blind trial in patients with retropubic prostatectomy.

2007

Background:  In comparison with bupivacaine, ropivacaine exhibits comparable anaesthetic effects but with less motor impairment and systemic toxicity. However, the analgesic potency may differ. For example, ropivacaine during obstetric epidural analgesia provides an approximately 40% lower analgesic potency than bupivacaine. Equal visual analogue pain scores require significantly higher dosages of ropivacaine, and general statements about a favourable benefit–risk profile relative to that of bupivacaine may therefore have limited clinical impact. We addressed this topic in a male pain model by evaluating the analgesic efficacy of epidural ropivacaine 0.2% vs. bupivacaine 0.125% after retrop…

EVALUATION OF LOW-ENERGY EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK-WAVE APPLICATION FOR TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PLANTAR FASCIITIS

2002

Background: Although the application of low-energy extracorporeal shock waves to treat musculoskeletal disor- ders is controversial, there has been some limited, short-term evidence of its effectiveness for the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis. Methods: From 1993 to 1995, a prospective, two-tailed, randomized, controlled, observer-blinded pilot trial was performed to assess whether three applications of 1000 impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group I) led to a su- perior clinical outcome when compared with three applications of ten impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group II) in patients with intractable plantar heel pain. The sample size was 112. The main outcome measure was patien…

The TiLOOP® Male Sling: Did We Forejudge.

2017

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the TiLOOP® male sling (pfm medical, Cologne, Germany) used in the treatment for male stress urinary incontinence (SUI). <b><i>Material and Methods:</i></b> We retrospectively evaluated a total of 34 patients with a TiLOOP® male sling. Perioperative complication rates were assessed and validated questionnaires were prospectively evaluated to assess quality of life and satisfaction rate. Outcome and complication rates were analysed by using descriptive statistics. Correlation of continence outcome and risk factors was performed with the chi-square test. A <i>p</i> va…

Refractive Lens Exchange with Foldable Toric Intraocular Lens

2009

To assess visual and refractive outcomes, and rotational stability after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to correct ametropia and preexisting astigmatism.Prospective, nonrandomized, observational case series (self-controlled).This prospective, nonrandomized, and self-controlled study included 32 eyes of 19 consecutive patients with more than 1.00 diopter (D) of preexisting corneal astigmatism having RLE with AcrySof Toric IOL implantation (Alcon Laboratories Inc, Fort Worth, Texas, USA). Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refractive sphere, and keratometric and refractive cylinder were recorded preoperatively …

Multicenter prospective study on the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany

2018

Background The purpose of this study was to assess the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany. Methods We enrolled patients who were scheduled for total laryngectomy, approached them again after surgery, after 3 months and 1 year. Patients completed questionnaires and were interviewed. Results Of 309 participants, 14% had not received any rehabilitation. Reasons for nonuse were primarily ongoing treatment and poor health. Users of rehabilitation had 4 times the odds of attaining any ability to speak compared to nonusers (odds ratio 3.8, P = .02). The main aim of rehabilitation from the perspective of the users was speech rehabilitation, mentioned by 71% before…

Visual function after implantation of an aspheric bifocal intraocular lens.

2009

Purpose To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near vision after bifocal aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD1 intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Methods Binocular distance best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (4.0 m), best distance-corrected near (40.0 cm) and intermediate (70.0, 60.0, 50.0 cm) acuities, and contrast sensitivity under photopic (85.0 candelas [cd]/m 2 ) and mesopic (3.0 cd/m 2 ) conditions with and without glare were measured postoperatively. A patient-satisfaction and visual phenomena questionnaire was administered. Results Six months postoperatively, the mean acuities (logMAR) were binocular BCVA, −0.064 ± 0.049…

ReSTOR® Diffractive versus Array®2 Zonal-progressive Multifocal Intraocular Lens: a Contralateral Comparison

2007

PURPOSE. To evaluate near and distance visual performance after implantation of a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) (AcrySof ReSTOR ® ) or a refractive MIOL (Array ® 2) in bilateral cataract surgery. METHODS. In this prospective, comparative trial, 18 patients with bilateral cataract were selected to have lens surgery with asymmetric MIOL implantation. Eighteen eyes received ReSTOR MIOL and the 18 fellow eyes were implanted with Array 2. Five months after second lens implantation, main postoperative outcomes were uncorrected and distance corrected near visual acuities (VA). Secondary outcomes were distance VA and near acuity with power add, contrast sensitivity with and without…

Postoperative analgesic efficacy of peripheral levobupivacaine and ropivacaine: a prospective, randomized double-blind trial in patients after total …

2008

BACKGROUND: Several previous trials have characterized the intra- and postoperative effects of the recently introduced local anesthetics, levobupivacaine and ropivacaine, for a variety of continuous peripheral nerve blocks. METHODS: We compared the analgesic efficacy of levobupivacaine 0.125% versus ropivacaine 0.2% via patient-controlled femoral nerve analgesia after total knee arthroplasty. In a double-blind, randomized, prospective design, 60 patients received femoral infusion with either substance. We analyzed postoperative local anesthetic consumption, pain scores, motor block, and opioid requirements over 72 h. RESULTS: Pain scores, motor block incidence, and opioid requirements were …
