Optimisation of photoluminescent painting treatments on different surface layers
2016
Improving drivers visibility in night time conditions is vital. Night-time visibility represents one of the most important features of road safety. Within such context, the use of photoluminescent road markings could represent an enhancement with regard to road safety. Consequently, the objective of the investigation here described was confined into the analysis of photoluminescent paints by referring to dense-graded and open-graded friction courses. Measurements, based on photometry technique, were carried out in the laboratory. Cores extracted from the surface layer of known pavements were used. Transitory effects (charge and discharge) and decay phenomena were investigated and modelled a…
Toward the Development of Load Transfer Efficiency Evaluation of Rigid Pavements by a Rolling Wheel Deflectometer
2020
The jointed rigid pavement is currently evaluated by the Falling weight deflectometer which is rather slow for the testing of the jointed pavements. Continuous nondestructive evaluation of rigid pavements with a rolling wheel deflectometer can be used to measure the load transfer and is investigated. Load transfer is an important indicator of the rigid pavement&rsquo
Exploiting Data Analytics and Deep Learning Systems to Support Pavement Maintenance Decisions
2021
Road networks are critical infrastructures within any region and it is imperative to maintain their conditions for safe and effective movement of goods and services. Road Management, therefore, plays a key role to ensure consistent efficient operation. However, significant resources are required to perform necessary maintenance activities to achieve and maintain high levels of service. Pavement maintenance can typically be very expensive and decisions are needed concerning planning and prioritizing interventions. Data are key towards enabling adequate maintenance planning but in many instances, there is limited available information especially in small or under-resourced urban road authorit…
Towards resilient cities: Advancements allowed by a multi-criteria optimization tool to face the new challenges of European Union’s climate and energ…
2019
Abstract The United Nations as well as the European Union are strongly committed in promoting a transition towards more sustainable and resilient cities. Indeed, they are increasingly affected by different types of threats, among which the natural ones such as earthquakes, fires, and floods (shocks) and climate variability (stresses). Cities are quite often unable to cope with the adverse effects of such natural hazards. This circumstance leads to the need of introducing resilience-related criteria (besides commonly used sustainability indicators) in decision-making processes. This paper investigates at which extent the inclusion of such new indicators, within multi-criteria assessment tool…
- SHADOW PRICES AND DISTANCE FUNCTIONS: AN ANALYSIS FOR FIRMS OF THE SPANISH CERAMIC PAVEMENTS INDUSTRY.
1999
This paper deals with the calculation of shadow prices for two industrial wastes generated on their production processes by a sample of eighteen firms belonging to the Spanish ceramic pavements industry. These prices are used to construct a corrected index of productivity which allows for considering wastes going with the production of marketable goods. It is followed the ethodologicalapproach first proposed by Färe, Grosskopf, Lovell y Yaisawarng (1993), which establishes a duality between distance and revenue functions. The shadow prices obtained for watery muds and used oils allow to measure in terms of a loss of marketable output the cost of achieving a marginal reduction in the product…
La escritura sobre el pavimento callejero: Los mensajes de felicitación
2014
The aim of this paper is to study the sidewalk as a communications medium, especially in the urban environment. To do so, we collected a corpus of a thousand institutional, businessrelated or personal messages from the sidewalk. This corpus comprises slogans, advertisements, protests, affectionate statements, congratulations... From among all these sidewalk writings, first we collected and examined messages targeting citizens in general, and then focused on birthday greetings in particular because they were more numerous and also because they reflect social transformations.El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar el suelo como soporte comunicativo, especialmente en las ciudades. Para ello, s…
Optimizing artificial neural networks for the evaluation of asphalt pavement structural performance
2019
Artificial Neural Networks represent useful tools for several engineering issues. Although they were adopted in several pavement-engineering problems for performance evaluation, their application on pavement structural performance evaluation appears to be remarkable. It is conceivable that defining a proper Artificial Neural Network for estimating structural performance in asphalt pavements from measurements performed through quick and economic surveys produces significant savings for road agencies and improves maintenance planning. However, the architecture of such an Artificial Neural Network must be optimised, to improve the final accuracy and provide a reliable technique for enriching d…
Smart Monitoring of Civil Infrastructures
2022
In this presentation, I will show a case study of smart monitoring applied on pavement road to detect the distresses and verify the real state of life of the infrastructures. The methodology used is based on the photogrammetric technique that allow us to carry out a 3D model that has the follow features: low cost process, low time process, user friendly, repeatability. These features consent to make a planning with frequently acquisition to guarantee a reliability monitoring. It works with the comparison between the dense clouds of the 3D models acquired in different moment: the mean square distance between the dense clouds shows where there has been a new distress or an increasing of an ol…
Predicting tire/pavement noise impact reduction using numerical simulation and experimental data for open graded asphalt mixture
2013
The environmental impact of noise from roads and highways traffic is relevant in urban and rural areas. The use of open-graded asphalt pavements reduces significantly the noise, entrapping the acoustic waves inside the porous structure of the material. In this paper we propose a simulation approach in order to predict the acoustic properties of the asphalt mixture from geometrical and topological indicators. In detail we have generated, using a Random Sequential Adsorption model, synthetic samples starting from the same grading and bitumen contents of real samples manufactured in laboratory. We have measured the acoustic adsorption coefficient of the real samples and we have investigated th…
The BIM (Building Information Modeling)-Based Approach for Road Pavement Maintenance
2019
The recent developments of road pavement survey technologies guarantee acquisition of detailed data regarding the main functional and structural indicators, at a very high frequency and levels of accuracy and precision unconceivable few years ago. The relevant information, regarding surface distresses too, is thus available in economical, high-speed and high-resolution forms, with limited disturbance on traffic and road agencies issues. However, the availability of such a mass of data poses interesting questions concerning the most efficient processing and analysis methods, for optimizing maintenance operation planning. Unfortunately, the PMS adoption is not very common and widespread, as t…
