Semaglutide reduces fat accumulation in the tongue: A randomized single-blind, pilot study
2021
Abstract Aim We evaluated the effect of the latest GLP-1 RA semaglutide on tongue fat storage in obese women. Design. We conducted a randomized single-blind, pilot study. Methods Twenty-five obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (33.7 ± 5.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 36.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2, mean ± SD) were randomized to semaglutide 1.0 mg or placebo for 16 weeks. We quantified tongue volume and its fat tissue and fat proportion by magnetic resonance imaging. Results Tongue fat tissue and fat proportion significantly reduced after semaglutide vs placebo (-1.94 ± 5.51 vs. + 3.12 ± 4.87 cm3, p = 0.022, and −0.02 ± 0.07 vs. 0.04 ± 0.06, p = 0.010, respectively). Correlation analysis rev…

Low estradiol-to-testosterone ratio is associated with oligo-anovulatory cycles and atherogenic lipidic pattern in women with polycystic ovary syndro…
2010
The estradiol-to-testosterone (E2/T) ratio has been investigated in different diseases but few in vivo data are available with regard to its role in women with ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the E2/T ratio in the ovulatory function and metabolic pattern in such women. We retrospectively evaluated hyperandrogenemia, clinical hyperandrogenism, ovarian morphology, hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis and metabolic syndrome parameters in a cohort of 202 consecutive women affected by PCOS. An oral glucose tolerance test measured areas under the curve for insulin (AUC(2hIRI)), for glucose (AUC(2hglucose)), and the HOMA-IR and Matsuda index of insulin resistance we…
Uterine effects of metformin administration in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary sindrome
2006
Background Metformin has been shown to improve fertility in anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), inducing not only a high ovulation and pregnancy rate but also reducing the incidence of miscarriages. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the uterine effects of metformin in patients with PCOS who ovulated under metformin. Methods Thirty-seven non-obese primary infertile anovulatory patients with PCOS and another 30 age- and body mass index-matched healthy women (control group) were studied. PCOS patients were treated with metformin (850 mg twice daily) for 6 months, whereas the control group did not receive any treatment. In these PCOS patients who ovulated whil…
The Effects of Sodium Nitroprusside-Induced Hypotension on Splanchnic Perfusion and Hepatocellular Integrity
1999
UNLABELLED The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of sodium nitroprusside-induced hypotension on splanchnic perfusion and hepatocellular integrity. Thirty patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were allocated randomly to a sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or control group (control). Regional pco2 was measured using gastric tonometry, and the regional to arterial difference in partial pressure of CO2 and intramucosal pH were calculated. The cytosolic liver enzyme alpha-glutathione S-transferase and standard liver enzyme markers (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase) were also measured. Mean arterial pressure in the SNP group was 50…

A novel pro-apoptotic role of zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine in melanoma me45 cancer cell's photodynamic therapy (PDT)
2018
Abstract Zn-based phthalocyanine acts as drug or photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of cancer cells. The activated zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine (ZnPcOC) reacts with oxygen, to generate reactive oxygen species for the damage of melanoma cancer cells, Me45. This in vitro study aimed at investigating the cytotoxic effects of different concentrations of ZnPcOC activated with a diode laser (λ = 685 nm) on Me45, and normal human fibroblast cells, NHDF. To perform this study 104 cells/ml were seeded in 96-well plates and allowed to attach overnight, after which cells were treated with different concentrations of ZnPcOC (10, 20 and 30 μM). After 4 h, cells were irradi…
Arterial and mixed venous blood gas status during apnoea of intubation--proof of the Christiansen-Douglas-Haldane effect in vivo.
1989
The Christiansen-Douglas-Haldane effect, in short the Haldane effect, describes the dependence of the CO2 binding of blood on the degree of oxygenation of haemoglobin. Under the physiological conditions of an ‘open’ system between blood and alveoli the partial pressure of arterial C02 (PaCO2), must be less than that of mixed venous blood (P[Formula: see text]CO2). During the unphysiological conditions of a ‘closed’ system, e.g. hyperoxic apnoea, i.e. continuous oxygen uptake without CO2 delivery by the lungs, the Paco2 will not only approximate the P[Formula: see text]CO2 but will even exceed it. Without the Haldane effect, rapid adjustment of Paco2 to P[Formula: see text]CO2 would be expe…
The accuracy of calculated base excess in blood.
2002
Most equations used for calculation of the base excess (BE, mmol/l) in human blood are based on the fundamental equation derived by Siggaard-Andersen and called the Van Slyke equation: BE = Z x [[cHCO3-(P) - C7.4 HCO3-(P)] + beta x (pH -7.4)]. In simple approximation, where Z is a constant which depends only on total hemoglobin concentration (cHb, g/dl) in blood, three equations were tested: the ones proposed by Siggaard-Andersen (SA), the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) or Zander (ZA). They differ only slightly in the solubility factor for carbon dioxide (alphaCO2, mmol/l x mmHg) and in the apparent pK(pK'), but more significantly in the plasma bicarbonate conc…
Up-conversion processes in NaLaF4:Er3+
2009
abstract Structural and spectroscopic investigation of NaLaF 4 :Er 3+ material at different doping concentrations ispresented. X-ray diffraction patterns, up-conversion luminescence spectra and decay curves for 2 H 9/2 ? 4 I 15/2 , 4 S 3/2 ? 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 ? 4 I 15/2 optical transitions in the material are shown and possibleexcitation routes are discussed. Raman spectrum for the undoped material is presented and the effectivephonon energy of the material is estimated. Based on the obtained results application of rare-earth dopedNaLaF 4 in the field of up-conversion phosphors is evaluated. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. 1.
